buying a truck to tow a travel trailer

I need some advice regarding the purchase of a pick-up truck to tow our travel trailer. We have a 30 foot travel trailer with a gross vehicle weight of 9000 lbs. We pland on doing a lot of travelling, including across country and into Canada. We looked at a 2013 Dodge Ram 1500. The salesman said the 2013's can tow up to 11,500 lbs. Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Patrick

You can use the Dodge 1500 but you may need the 'Hemi' engine with the 3:90 something rear end to tow it. And remember that you still have the same truck when not towning at $4.00 a gallon.

Until recently I owned a 6.0 liter Chevy Silverado 2500 HD with a 6 ft bed and pulled a 35 ft Salem travel trailer that weighed about 8000 lbs empty. I towed it from Ohio to the west coast 4 times. It did OK but not great. The engine did fine in Ohio but it really suffered in the mountains and high plains due to the thin air. Hills and wind were really hard on it. A 1500 would definitely pull it but you wouldn't go anywhere fast and you would have to be careful with the brakes going down large hills. A transmission cooler would extend the life of your transmission. I recently upgraded to a 2500 long bed with a cummins diesel and it pulls so much better. The engine has plenty of power and the long bed makes it tow a lot smoother and feels a lot more stable. I wish I would have had this truck on my previous trips out west.
