Three years before NASA tapped him as a contractor to work on designs for the Space Station, Finney was working in New York, working on furniture and interior design. Now going from space to more terrestrial locales, Finney is turning his attention to something he finds a personal interest in: Recreational vehicles. Recently interviewed by the Houston Chronicle, the news of Finney's latest projects came to light. As to RVs, "He's not a fan of the enormous houses-on-wheels he sees rolling down highways. They're gas guzzlers. They're expensive to buy and expensive to operate. Even Airstream trailers, beloved by design fans, strike him as oversized and clumsy -- tolerable, maybe, for the Greatest Generation but nothing that eco-conscious twentysomethings would stand for. " So what's in Garrett Finney's mind? The Cricket. The Cricket is a pop-trailer that Finney has already built as a cardboard model. His plans are to build a full-sized prototype in the near future. With an eye to light weight, Finney projects the new RV will be towable by a four-cylinder auto; the rig will have outside, fold-down "wings" that will hopefully allow users to tote equipment like kayaks. Inside, fold down beds will accommodate sleepers, and a drain in the middle of the floor will handle the runoff from the shower. No word yet on whether the Cricket will be equipped with landing thrusters. (Photo: Houston Chronicle, attributed to FARO studio.)
