Dear reader,
I'm back from Europe, and happy to once again be on U.S. soil. It's good to go away, but equally as good to return home. After being far away for a few weeks, in a foreign land, it was a wonderful feeling when the woman at U.S. Customs in Seattle, after checking my passport, said "Welcome home."

Visiting another country not only helps you understand that country and its culture, but it also helps you reflect on your own. I spent most of my trip in Germany, and although I loved the beauty of the land, the history, the architecture, and the wonderful people I met, I returned home with a new appreciation of what a spectacular country I live in here in the USA.

One evening in Germany before retiring for the night, I tuned into CNN, which is an entirely different broadcast than we see in the USA (a much more international focus). One commercial was shot in the American Southwest -- probably near Moab, Utah, or Monument Valley, Arizona. As I watched I was struck by how totally exotic the landscape is there compared to anywhere in Europe. It's no wonder when Europeans come to America they are in awe -- not only of the stunning Southwest, but of our beautiful East and West Coasts, the South, the Gulf Coast, the Rocky Mountains, the Midwest and everywhere else. Our land is incredibly diverse and often exceptionally scenic.

I have spent so much of my life traveling the USA -- especially the West -- that I often take it for granted. Sometimes a person needs to go away to appreciate more clearly what is in their backyard. America is, indeed, "America the Beautiful," and I am blessed to live here.

Entertainment on the RV road
Many campgrounds have cable TV, but particularly for those RVers depending on off-air TV signals, the advent of digital television with its shorter broadcast distance, means you may not be able to get as many (or any at all) channels in the same locations you had great reception in last year. Here are a few options.

Camp near the Grand Canyon South Rim for free
Anyone who has camped at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon knows that it's often difficult or impossible to get a campsite. Here's a tip about where you can camp close by for free, where it's quiet, scenic and away from big crowds. What’s the secret? Boondock in the Kaibab National Forest. There's lots of good camping and Uncle Sam invites you to stay for free. Read more.

http://rvtravel.com/publish/images/videoicon.jpgHow NOT to stay overnight in a Wal-Mart parking lot
This is what you should NOT do in a Wal-Mart parking lot. While it's true that many RVers spend the night in a Wal-Mart parking lot, they do so in a self-contained RV -- without extending slideouts, or setting out lawn chairs or barbecue grills. The idea is park, get some sleep and leave. And to blend in. In this 30-second video, a couple of guys set up camp with . . . well, see for yourself. Tip: Never do this. Never!

Should health issues keep you off the RV road?
Like it or not, the older we get, the more most of us struggle with health issues. Does that mean the RV lifestyle is out of reach? Granted, some have health issues that really do "ground" them. But some who've taken the plunge and worked around the obstacles have found that RVing has actually helped them have a more positive outlook, and in some cases, actually decreased their health problems. Read more.

Right:
David Letterman plugs KOA (sort of).

Sales of RVs jumped 16 percent in August from July, good news for the industry and the economy, some economists say. In August, sales jumped to an adjusted annual rate of 209,800 vehicles, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association. That's 136 percent higher than the annual sales rate in January, although it is about half the pre-recession sales pace.

Emerald Cove RV Resort in Parker, Arizona has opened a new golf course. The resort is just minutes from the four-star course. Emerald Cove RV Resort offers 800 spaces, three heated swimming pools and a country store.

Riding a mule into the Grand Canyon may be a thing of the past or at least more restricted. The park service is mulling cutting back "mule trains" because of the damage the heavy animals' hooves cause to trails. One solution: limit mules to one trail where the damage can be more easily controlled.

The number of visitors to Missouri State Parks in 2008 was 14.8 million, down 19 percent from 18.2 million a decade ago. Governor Jay Nixon outlined a new initiative last week to jump start visits.

Last Thursday a passerby reported seeing lightning strike the ground where two RVs were parked side by side at Bowling Motors & RV Sales in Ottumwa, Iowa. Smoke was subsequently seen coming from one of the motorhomes, and then the other. Both were a total loss.

Actor David Duchovny, best known for his role in the TV series The X-Files, recently completed a cross country RV trip with his wife, actress Tea Leoni, and their two children. Trip highlights, he said, included the Grand Canyon, a baseball game in St. Louis and a visit with an Amish family in Ohio.

The Saturn automobile is headed to extinction. GM will stop producing models sometime after the end of 2011. The Saturn has been a popular tow-along car for motorhome owners. GM had tried to sell the brand because of lackluster sales, but had no luck.

Nearly 6,000 motorists died in 2008 because of distracted driving according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Another 515,000 drivers were injured. Safety officials identified distractions as cellphone use, texting, eating, talking to passengers and manipulating radio or vehicle controls.

Most California state parks discontinue spring camping reservations
Don't plan to reserve a California state park campsite in March and April, 2010. Only 23 parks will accept them. The Governor's Office has announced that all parks will remain open under this year's budget cut of $14 million. So while fear of park closures is over (for now), the state is planning many cutbacks, including curtailing some reservations. Learn more.

Out-of-the-way places: Lee's Ferry Campground, Arizona
Legend has it that when one of the wives of a Mormon settler came west to this spot on the Colorado River, she declared, "Oh! What a lonely dell!" Hence, the name of the new homestead came to be Lonely Dell. For RVers, a lonely spot away from the crowds might just be the ticket. You'll find a quiet campground alongside a beautiful stretch of the Colorado River, not far from Page, Arizona. Read more.

For your "junk" you need a junk rack
When we took delivery of our 5th wheel trailer (before buying our motorhome), it didn’t have much in the way of towel bars, junk holders and hooks. Where do I put my wallet, watch, cell phone, all-purpose tool, reading glasses and keys? We looked around the 5th wheel and decided that we needed a towel bar next to the kitchen sink and the bathroom sink, and a "junk rack" somewhere near the entrance. See what we came up with (with photos). This column originally appeared on RVtravel.com in Jan., 2007).

Flat, space-saving water hose does not impress
UV radiation finally signed the death warrant of one of Russ and Tina De Maris' RV drinking water hoses: The poor thing just permanently kinked, and filling the rig's fresh water tank became a kind of marathon exercise. So, looking for a new hose that took minimum space, the couple found a flat hose with 30' foot reel. Unfortunately, the product did not live up to its promise. Read more.

RVer asks RV Doctor how to reseal a leak in sliding window

Dear RV Doctor,
My 1997 motorhome has recently developed a leak in a sliding window. I have sprayed water on it from the outside to try to determine where it was leaking and it looks as if the water is coming from under the window trim. The water then flows over the wall onto the seat cushions. All of the weep holes are open and appear to be working fine, so I think that the butyl has dried up and is now leaking. My question is how hard is this to fix? It would seem all I need do is remove the trim from the inside and then push out the window. I'm not familiar with all of the elements of the window (like where the butyl tape is located and what is that material around the window; is it to seal or just for esthetics?) Any guidance would be very much appreciated. Read Gary's response.

Pointers on stealth camping in the city
I'm currently full-timing in my RV on a friend's property in the mountains where I can drive daily to my job with a pretty friendly commute. Unfortunately. . . my job is moving far away from here. I'm mobile and my RV has a great setup for dry camping. What I'd like to do is just take my rig to the area where I'll be working four nights a week and camp either in my company's parking lot or on a quiet street or vacant lot or whatever. Does anyone here have experience doing this?

Help me understand RV toilets
I have been posting on the Intro section of the forum about looking for a small travel trailer. One of the things that I am finding on my internet searches is a variety of different types of toilets - marine toilets, recirculating toilets, etc. I have no idea what they are talking about. Could anyone explain the different types of toilets commonly found on small travel trailers?

Vehicle registration questions
I'm getting a new truck with all the bells and whistles. My question is can I register this new vehicle anywhere or do I have to do it in my home state? I need to retain my Ohio residency for work but can I register the truck where I buy it?

Getting started
We just started to think about getting a small travel trailer that will tow behind our SUV with a class three hitch and the ability to tow up to 4,500 pounds. We live on Long Island in NY and there are very few trailer dealers in this area -- and it seems like the smaller trailers are not easy to find. A/C is a must. Size less than 18 or 19 feet. Any recommendations on what we should look for?

About the RVtravel.com editor
Chuck Woodbury has explored America by RV for nearly three decades. In the '90s he published a quirky travel newspaper about his adventures and was an "on the road" writer for the New York Times Syndicate. Nowadays, he lives near Seattle where he drinks massive amounts of coffee and travels often in his motorhome and sometimes by plane when vast expanses of saltwater would turn his RV into a leaky submarine. He is the host of the Better Business Bureau DVD "Buying a Recreational Vehicle," the definitive guide to purchasing an RV the right way.

Everything in this newsletter is true to the best of our knowledge. But we occasionally get something wrong. We're just human! So don't go spending $10,000 on something we said was good just because we said so, or fixing something like we suggested (check with your own technician first). Maybe we made a mistake. So be sure to check things out. At RVbookstore.com we strive for excellence in all we do and that's the honest truth (as opposed to the dishonest truth). Our customers receive really, really fast service. We move so fast in sending out a customer's order that sometimes we pass through the sound barrier, which really upsets our neighbors. Our motto is "You need it so we speed it," and no truer words were ever spoken!
