By Chuck Woodbury

Dear reader,
Welcome to the 401st edition of this newsletter. You'll notice a short video from the RV Doctor, Gary Bunzer, embedded right in this newsletter (below). Just click it and you'll get a valuable tech tip. Gary will have one for you each week.

I am very happy to report that sales at our RVbookstore.com are almost double what they were a year ago this month. I believe this provides solid evidence that both the general economy and the RV industry are on their way to better days. This is especially good news for us because the extra money we earn from our store can be invested right back into RVtravel.com and our other websites to make them better. Already, we have added new blogs and resumed others, and invested in a high quality video camera and studio equipment for more frequent webcasts with RVing experts.

I'm headed to California next week to take care of family business, still trying to sell my late-parents house in the Sierra foothill community of Grass Valley. (Covered parking for any sized RV).

That's all I've got to say for this week: I'm not feeling inspired to write -- sometimes the ol' brain needs a break.

http://rvtravel.com/publish/images/videoicon.jpgWEBCAST ARCHIVE: Watch a 45-minute recording of our live webcast of Oct. 17 with Gary Bunzer, the RV Doctor. Gary takes questions from RVtravel.com readers and answers them on the spot. Watch the recorded webcast.

BLOGGERS WANTED
RVtravel.com is looking for bloggers on the topics of RVing Mexico and RVing Florida. Some pay is involved. Candidates must have excellent first-hand knowledge of the subject matter and be familiar with blogging technique. Please no blogs about "We went here and did this." Contact Chuck(at)RVtravel.com for more information.

See books, DVDs at bottom of newsletter
We've moved many of the ads for books, eBooks and DVDs at RVbookstore.com to the bottom of this newsletter. So please check them out. We have the world's largest selection.

RV users of Starband satellite Internet in miff
A couple of months ago RVers who use Starband for satellite Internet service were told their service was moving to another satellite. But once it happened, connect speeds were terrible -- five minutes for the Yahoo home page to load (if it loaded at all). Despite Starband's promises of better service, our Digital RVer blogger Scott Koegler said the service is still as "slow as a slug in wet cement." Read more.

Travel by RV this holiday season, suggests New York Times
This week, the New York Times wrote: "Holiday surcharges. Bag fees. Fees for just about everything. Long airport security lines. Flying might not be your cheapest, quickest or most comfortable option to travel to grandma's house this Thanksgiving. Consider taking the bus or Amtrak, driving or even renting a recreational vehicle for a family adventure. At an average $2.57 a gallon this week, gasoline is almost 12 percent cheaper than it was a year ago.
"

Parking your RV for the winter? Beware of "flat-spotting"
The trouble with parking tires for long periods of time while doing nothing is the tendency to “flat spot,” which as it sounds, is to develop a flat spot. Pull "out of the dock" next spring and your tires will remind you of their memory with a rough ride. In extreme cases they may hold a permanent flat spot. Read more.

Stay warm in your RV this winter with a catalytic heater
Winter is coming. Snowbirds are migrating to the desert with its sunshine and blue skies. Still, it gets cold in the desert, especially at night. Stay warm with your forced air furnace, but, alas, it will quickly drain your house batteries. A solution: A catalytic heater. There's no fan, no electricity usage, it runs on propane right from your tank, heat comes from a chemical reaction, portable installation can be self-installed, costs pennies per hour and no battery draining. Learn more.

"What you need to know in as few words as possible."

The American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration and the National Recreation and Park Association have rated Pennsylvania's State Parks as the best in the country. Other finalists for the 2009 gold medal award were state park systems in Georgia, Michigan and North Carolina.

Dutchmen RV has cut the number of its brands from 18 to seven and is focusing on more affordable and lightweight products. The company has rehired 50 workers for its "reinvention."

The owner of a former RV dealership near Redding, Calif., and three employees are headed to trial, accused of stealing more than $300,000 from their customers.  Shasta County prosecutors say Robin Moberg and three employees at R&R RV Sales in Anderson sold more than 80 consignment RVs without paying the owners.

The owners of a KOA campground in Warren County, Kentucky are being sued by a woman who says the death of her little boy in their swimming pool was the campground's fault.

Crossroads RV in Topeka, Indiana is hiring 125 new employees. The company makes lightweight travel trailers.

Seven acres of grassland meadow in the Santa Monica Mountains, once part of Ronald Reagan's ranch, may become the Ronald Reagan Equestrian Campground. It will feature 30 campsites, each with two corrals, and access to 500 miles of public trails.

A judge decided Thursday to give luxury motorhome maker Country Coach more time to reorganize its business plan, noting that the company has "at least a reasonable chance" to emerge from bankruptcy. The company resumed production in April with plans to make one coach per week, but has not met production or sales goals and has been losing about $1 million a month, according to court testimony and documents.

Reservations are up at several Arizona campgrounds and RV parks that cater to snowbirds, according to an informal survey of park operators across the Grand Canyon State by the Arizona Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds. In Texas, reservations are also up at RV parks that cater to winter visitors.

How do fulltime RVers keep busy?
Some, unfamiliar with the RV lifestyle, wonder just what fulltimers do to “keep themselves occupied.” After all, there’s no more lawn to mow, trim to be painted, or any of the other things that keep the sticks n bricks folks too busy to enjoy life. Here’s a list of things that some RVers do to keep their mental juices flowing.

Advice for women RVers
Adrienne Kristine, our Women RVer's blogger, has her annual fall message about preparing for the upcoming winter season. Actually, the advice applies to all RVers, men or women. Click here.

Professor of RVing

Device is great for "spying" around corners.
Jim writes: "Do you remember the spy tubes that allowed you to look around corners? I loved these gadgets when I was a kid. If I remember correctly, I saved tops off of cereal boxes to get one. Spy tubes had two mirrors aligned at right angles allowing you to "peek" around corners." These days, the Professor of RVing uses a handy solar powered inspection mirror with LED light. Read how he uses it and why he likes it.

Towable RV choices: travel trailer vs fifth wheel
So you've decided to buy a towable RV. Your choices then are a travel trailer and a fifth wheel trailer. So what's best for you? As with other decisions in the RV spectrum, there is no single right answer. Both have their strong points and drawbacks. Read more.

Pay attention to your RV tires

Keeping up with the tires on your RV is critical: Blow a tire on your motorhome, you could find yourself in the ditch--or worse. If you don't keep up with tire pressure , you'll increase your fuel purchase costs and pay for prematurely worn out tires. But taking care of your RV tires doesn't take a lot of time and effort -- just regularity. Read more.

RV black water holding tank is plugged. What to do?

Dear RV Doc,
Our black tank in the RV is plugged up by the toilet. We bought one of those Flush Kings and back-washed the tank several times. We took a snake and ran it as far as it would go from the toilet side and still it did not drain. The snake seemed to just coil up. Is there something else we could try? --Randall Peters

Boondocking Tip
By Bob Difley
Many RV keys are alike, good for burglars

Many RVs are manufactured using a common locker key, which means that other RVers or thieves who get hold of one have a key to your storage compartments. Thievery is often a matter of convenience. The combination of a common locker key and a rig with no one around could be just enough to tempt a would-be thief. Solution: change all your outside lockers to a unique key system. Bob Difley is the author of the eBook Boondocking: Finding the Perfect Campsite on America's Public Lands ($7.95) and the editor of the RVtravel.com Boondocking Blog.

Towing dinghy with 3.0 diesel Sprinter motorhome
I want to buy a 2010 Sprinter (View, Icon, etc.) and will need to tow a Jeep Wrangler. I've heard pro and con about ability to tow on other than level ground. Can anyone help me with their towing experience with this little diesel?

Onan generator need help
I have a 4000 watt Onan in my 1996 motorhome. When I press the start button, I always get a clicking sound like a solenoid on a car not engaging. If I hold the start button down, it will eventually turn over, slow, then finally turn over enough to start. The generator seems to run fine once it is running. Wonder if you could help me?

Considering a Sleep Number mattress. What do you think?
We were considering replacing our mattress in our 5er with a Sleep Number mattress. Since they seem to be a little on the costly side, we would really appreciate any input from anyone who has one. We are trying to find out if they are better for a bad back and if they are really worth the price. I don't mind spending money on one if it is really worth the investment. The salespeople will tell you whatever they have to in order to make the sale so I'm asking the most honest people I know for advice.

Gauge lights blinking in counter-clockwise motion/key off
Anyone have any ideas? Is this normal? I can't find any help in the owner's manual. The lights will not go off, they just keep blinking from one to the other in a counter-clockwise motion when key's off.

Who makes Frontier Plainsman trailers?
Does anyone know who makes the Frontier Plainsman trailers? I'm considering purchasing a pre-owned unit but I cannot find any information on them.

Random RV Thought
Some motorhomes sleep five or even six people -- that's what the RV makers say. But, really, unless some of those people are kids, you'll be packing along a heap of weight if that many people cram into a single RV with all their stuff. Too much weight is a very bad thing and sometimes even very dangerous.

Guide to Winterizing Your RV

About the RVtravel.com editor
Chuck Woodbury has explored America by RV for nearly three decades. In the '90s he published a quirky travel newspaper about his adventures and was an "on the road" writer for the New York Times Syndicate. Nowadays, he lives near Seattle where he drinks massive amounts of coffee and travels often in his motorhome and sometimes by plane when vast expanses of saltwater would turn his RV into a leaky submarine. He is the host of the Better Business Bureau DVD "Buying a Recreational Vehicle," the definitive guide to purchasing an RV the right way.

Everything in this newsletter is true to the best of our knowledge. But we occasionally get something wrong. We're just human! So don't go spending $10,000 on something we said was good just because we said so, or fixing something like we suggested (check with your own technician first). Maybe we made a mistake. So be sure to check things out. At RVbookstore.com we strive for excellence in all we do and that's the honest truth (as opposed to the dishonest truth). Our customers receive really, really fast service. We move so fast in sending out a customer's order that sometimes we pass through the sound barrier, which really upsets our neighbors. Our motto is "You need it so we speed it," and no truer words were ever spoken!
