Michigan warns drunks of consequences

Michigan is about to kick off an advertising campaign it hopes will curb drunk driving. One ad notes that more than 50,000 Michigan motorists were arrested for drunk driving last year. Another spotlights the financial burdens of a conviction. "Fines, increased insurance rates and the possible loss of the driver's license are just some of the penalties drunk drivers have to face when they're arrested," said Michael L. Prince, OHSP division director. Focus group findings indicate that members of the campaign's target group, men ages 21 to 34, are most concerned with the monetary consequences of a drunk driving conviction. If a sign like this will stop a driver from driving drunk, it will be worth the time and money to put up signs all over the United States.

I believe if we fined a person or delivered some other significant CONSEQUENCE for driving under the influence the first time - every time - and then took away the driver's licence for life the second time, there would be fewer individuals driving under the influence "just because"...and lives would be saved.
