Postcard of the week: Indian "humor"
You won't find this postcard for sale nowadays except in an antique shop. The days of poking fun at American Indians is long over. But it wasn't so even 40 or 50 years ago when this cartoon postcard was available in roadside tourist shops throughout the American West. In fact, cartoon-type postcards were very popular back then. I'll have more to share with you in the weeks and months ahead.

You're right, this post card is from an era less poltically correct. Since that time, we've learned that Native Americans don't like their women to be called squaws. It would be nice to think that we have also learned not to perpetuate hurtful stereotypes.

Come on - get over it! It's a JOKE for goodness sake. No one is "poking fun" at anyone. -- It's a JOKE hahaha. - Laugh a little, you'll probably feel a whole lot better. And no one will be the worse off for it. - Poke fun at men if you'd like - they'll laugh if it's funny, I'm sure.

I vote on the side of *not* funny. Chuck, your original post didn't say whether you were glad or not glad that such humor isn't any longer politically correct. I don't think it's really great to perpetuate these old stereotypes. Please no more! Elli

I think it's helpful to publish postcards like this. Before too long there'll be another generation arise who poopoo the very idea that people in the past were prejudiced against Native Americans, African Americans, etc. "Memorabilia" like this postcard is historically significant and illustrative of the problem. No comment is needed as it speaks for itself.
