Tiny post office

You don't find post office as small as this one very often. Actually, you never find a post office smaller than this one because this is the smallest post office building in the USA. It's located in Ochopee, Florida (Zip Code 33943), which is 35 miles east of Naples on U.S. 41 in the Big Cypress National Preserve. This postcard is about 12 years old.

  • Inside the post office is a counter and room for three people: the postal employee and two customers. We had this picture hanging in the post office where I worked.

  • Have seen this tiny post office several times on our way to the Florida Keys. BUT, it brings back BAD memories.
Last time I passed it at night, there was a highway patrol officer sitting in the parking lot waiting for speeders. He GOT me! And he wouldn't let me off the hook for anything because the area is also a panther protective region. Cost me almost $200!

  • Hey, Jeff. Looks like the memory was so bad it came out twice. :>

When I lived in the country outside of Springdale, Arkansas, we had a little building on our land that looked just like this one. The former owner said that it had been used as a post office in days past. Now I might believe him.

  • I took a picture of this post ofice on my first Florida trip back in 1971 tenting in the Florida Keys. My late partner and I travelled from 1991 to 1998 and I always had a fascination for taking pictures of America's post offices,as those in Ontario are all the same. This unique little post office started it all.Colleen

  • Anyone ever been to Fields, Oregon? population 13. As I recall the post office, gas station, restaurant and grocery store were all in one small building.

  • Years ago when my parents had some land very near this spot (before the government 'appropriated' it, we used to stop here and occasionally chat with the post lady. We were amazed that anyone really worked here but after a number of visits I finally believed it. Seeing this photo brings back fond memories of trips to 'the property' and exploring the area. Thanks for the memories.
