Room with a view

That small white shape in the upper left of this photo is my fifth wheel, perched near the edge of Chama Canyon in New Mexico. I've stayed at some nice campgrounds, but very few offer the solitude and scenery that I prefer. Finding camp sites like this means getting off the beaten track, locating Forest Service and BLM roads and doing a little exploring. As was the case here, I'm careful about where I tow my trailer. After nearly getting wedged up a narrow back road on one or two occasions, I now find a place to drop the fiver while I scout out an area for a great camp site that I can safely get into and out of.

  • Hey Jerry, I've read some of your other stuff, as Riverguy, and found interesting, but this pic and your comments clenched the deal. You are "our kind of people" and I'll mark your blog to read regularly. We live in Nevada and have been full timers as of June 06, but not yet retired. People think we are crazy, but we have no regrets about the decision. We love BLM camping!

  • Nice picture Jerry. Did you hike that distance from your fiver to get the picture.

  • Just purchased an Alpenlite 30CK Fiver and a new Dodge Ram 3500 with a Cummins engine. We will make our first trip in two weeks and are both very excited...and a little nervous. Your campsite looks like what we've been daydreaming about!

  • We hiked all over that mesa, mostly rockhounding. Got out there a ways, looked back & realized it would make a great photo, so I went back, got my camera & hiked it again.
