Where Is Your Favorite RV Place?

Here is you chance to vote for your favorite RV campground. It could be a state park, BLM land, national forest, national park, private RV park, Corps of Engineers campground, strand of beach, or your great uncle’s hunting lodge. I have many places that I enjoy, but this year I am voting for Huntington Beach State Park in South Carolina as my #1 favorite park. We absolutely LOVED this place! The day we drove in, I snapped (no pun intended) a picture of this gator sunning himself in the fresh water lake next to the campground. Directly across from this lake is a salt water marsh that has some of the best bird watching I’ve ever encountered. Wood Storks, both Little and Great Blue Heron, White Ibis, and all manner of water foul. The campground is nice, most with electric and water only, although there are a few full hook-ups. The pristine white beach (where I caught blue fish and a shark) is about 100 yards from the campground. We saw dolphins jumping and feeding every day.Across the street is one of our nation’s greatest art treasures, Brookgreen Gardens - donated by the Huntingtons. Here you will find one of the largest collections of American sculpture all on the beautiful gardens of three former plantations. Much of the sculpture is outdoors and is absolutely wonderful! There is so much here that I haven’t even begun to describe it, so, you’ll have to load up the RV and discover it for yourself. You’ll love it (reservations recommended).

OK, so click on “comment” at the bottom of this article and tell me your favorite RV spot along with a brief description of the place and why you like it. I love to compare notes around the campfire. Jim

  • Any of the public campgrounds in and around Henry's Fork of the Snake River. I'm particularly thinking about several in Island Park, Idaho, not far from the Northern entrance to Yellowstone. We used to camp there often about 18 years ago when we lived in Idaho Falls. It was beautiful, serene and yet near a great wonder of our country.

Also, recently we have been camping in Shenandoah National Park. Another lovely place that will take years to explore.

  • from Karen and Steve Pfundtner, Wisconsin Northwoods:

Our favorite is a rustic park in the heart of Michigan's Upper Penninsula. It's so quiet and remote and peaceful. Here is what I copied from the hunts.com camping site:

PORTAGE BAY CAMPGROUND/Lake Superior State Forest
    (906) 341-8463; no reservations

Portage Bay is one of Michigan's hidden treasures. Because it's part of the state forest system, it's less developed and less promoted than state parks. Its 23 large, rustic campsites ($10/night) are in mature pines just behind low dunes from a wonderfully natural, quiet sandy cove on the east side of the Garden Peninsula. Two beautiful hiking loops are interpreted with info on plants used in traditional Ojibwa life. Coming here is ample reward for giving up easy access and hot showers. This campground fills on summer holiday weekends and some other times in August. A few weekend sites are usually available.

From M-183 17 miles out the peninsula, past Garden, look for Portage Bay Rd. Go 6 miles east on dirt roads to the beach. (That slow drive is what keeps the crowds away.) Open from snowmelt to snowfall. Wheelchair accessible except beach area.

  • We took our fifth wheel travel trailer to Yellowstone National Park last summer. We had a great time exploring the park. We saw all the geothermic features and the wildlife; buffalo, moose, birds, deer, etc. We also took a tour through the Grand Tetons before returning home.

  • I'm partial to the private campground "Beachcomber" in Cape May County, but that may be partially because I'm a "Jersey Boy" and love being "Down The Shore"

  • The Wedge/Buckhorn Draw Utah. It is one of the lesser visited area ( San Rafael swell) The Wedge is nicknamed Utah's Little Grand Canyon. We love it because of the peace, the wildlife and beauty that not many get to enjoy. Lots of canyons to explore for the kids as well.

  • Yellowstone is our favorite (so far) especially since the morning we left the campsite in the motor home and stopped in a pull out to watch folks fly fishing. Instead of getting breakfast at the campsite or on the road we started it right there. By the time we were eating, we had a herd of 40-50 buffalo walking past our window (we were eye-level with their knees). Off-season Yellowstone is a gift!!!

  • Lost Lake campground in the Okanogan National Forest near Tonasket, WA, has got to be my favorite campground. It is rare that one can find such relaxing beauty as one can find here, complete with wildlife (deer, bear, cougar, squirrels, chipmunks) in a poisonous snake non-existence.

  • We have two favorites at the moment. Buckskin Mtn. State Park, just 11 miles north of Parker AZ on a big bend of the Colorado River is so peaceful and restful. It's immaculately groomed by volunteer camp hosts. And then there's Zion Canyon NP in So. UT. It's been a favorite of ours since 1965 and it only gets better!

  • My husband and I have only owned an RV for less than a year, but our favorite place to camp is at SISCRA campground in mid Idaho. It is a campground maintained by retired citizens, and among the amenities are lots of huge shade trees, full electric/water hookups, public restrooms with showers, a community center where they have jam sessions, etc., they spray for mosquitos, water down the dirt roads for dust control, have horseshoe pits, and it's within walking distance to the lake, where you can fish, boat, or swim. The price is right and the people are great! We highly recommend it!

  • Ah, the memories of camping at Luddington State park in Michigan. From the 50's as a boy with my family, the 60s with buddies, or since with my wife and our family, Luddington is hard to beat. Swimming in Hamlin Lake, fishing, hiking, and then walking the beach and watching the sun set over beautiful Lake Michigan. This is truely one of the nicest places on earth to spend time and have fun.

  • Our favorite is Cotillion Gardens RV Park in Felton, CA. It's literaly in the middle of the coast redwoods,9 miles north of Santa Cruz. The Roaring Camp and Big Trees Railroad is a nice walk across the San Lorenzo River. It is really nice sitting in the shade of a 250 ft tall tree listening to the whistle of a small steam locomotive climbing that steap grade.

It's about 55 miles going NW out of Dubois on Hwy 26 (Just before you reach Togwotee Pass) heading for the Tetons. 27' fifth wheel. Got to wait until the snow melts in June though! Take your coats.Beautiful alpine country and lake.

  • I could list a dozen campgrounds, mostly free ones in Washington State. But tops on my list is the Hoh Campground in the Olympic National Park near the town of Forks. The Bear Creek Campground is also on the Olympic Loop, and is free.

  • My favorite place to RV is Carpinteria State Park just south of Santa Barbara, CA. It's billed as the safest beach in Calif. I started going there during Easter week with my two boys when they were little and now I take my granddaughter. It's beautiful and peaceful. The perfect getaway spot.
