Save The Planet By Reusing Disposable Propane Bottles

The MacCoupler EZ Fill propane coupler is ideal for folks who use the convenient one pound propane bottles for lanterns, grills, stoves and heaters. These little bottles don’t last very long and each year over a million of them wind up in landfills after only one use. Now you can refill these small bottles and reuse them again and again with the MacCoupler EZ Fill propane coupler. It takes one minute to refill a bottle from a 20 to 40 pound propane tank – there are no gauges, or other special tools needed to do this procedure. You can download the instructions in PDF format and read more about this product here:

  • It has always irked me that these little propane bottles were considered "disposable" and ended up in landfills. Now they can be reused. What a great little device!

  • Find a Harbor Freight store, they have these couplers for as low as ten dollars on sale. They work great!

  • I have been using a MacCoupler for more than 15 years.
    My instructions include.
    Chill small cylinder BEFORE filling
Turn cylinder and tank upside down.
Open valve on tank for one minute then shut valve.
Disconnect small cylinder FIRST. Check cylinder for leaks with soap and water.
If bubbles appear discard in safe area.

  • I have one and have used it. But caution. These bottles are NOT designed to be refilled. Some will leak. If you use one and it doesn't reseal, use it right away or get rid of it. The little plastic cap won't hold leaking propane in that bottle and propane explosions and fires are not worth the cost. Follow the instructions to the letter using the Mac Coupler.

  • This is a wonderful idea but I have to wonder about the safety of it. I owned a service station and served propane for a number of years including taking courses in safe handling. There does not seem to be any way of assuring you do not overfill. I believe that it is probably okay because you are only getting gas not liquid propane similar to purging regular propane tanks.
My second worry would be the condition of the tank. How many people will just keep refilling regardless of the condition and age of the tank. Regular propane tanks have a life span (Tanks are dated) and require testing after this time period. One reason being they can get moisture in them and rust from the inside. If you had some moisture in your 20 lb tank you could probably put it in your 1 lb'er.
Personally without checking with an expert I will not be using this device.

  • Throw them away and don't take a chance of a fire. Safety is worth much more than saving the bottle.

  • This is a very unsafe operation and a person can get a very bad freeze burn if liquid propane gets on your skin.
