UV radiation is an enemy to RV tires. Over time the sun’s rays will break down the rubber on the side-walls of your tires unless you do something to stop it. The best way to protect your tires is to cover them.

You can use standard tire covers designed to fit over your tires but these require you to snug the cover over the tire and secure the bottom. I used these on my last two 5th wheels and always got dirty putting them on and taking them off.

Another approach is to put snap buttons on the exterior and snap a cover over the tire well. A newer approach is to get in the grove with a slide in contour wheel well cover. Christine Franks with Motor Coach Design (MCD) demonstrates this application.

The cover slides into a grove that holds the tire cover neatly in place.

The bottom has an adjustable weight to hold the cover at the bottom of the tire no matter how your RV is leveled.

MCD is located in McKinney, Texas. You can contact them at (800) 804-1757 or check out their website where you’ll also find several other RV items of interest

Professor, this sort of relates to the tires issue. . . .do you know if Armor All is bad for tires? I keep hearing that. But then I think to myself, why the heck would it still be around if it's so bad for them? Any insight?

There is a plethora of discussion about using products on your tires that contain chemicals that may harm rubber. It's mostly hearsay, not backed up with any scientific research. Show me one scientific paper regarding this issue and then, we'll talk. These people think that putting Armor All on your tires is equivalent to using gasoline and then setting them on fire. Nonsense! You're going to wear out your tires long before a product like Armor All would cause any damage. I like the 303 product myself, but ultimately the most effective way to prevent solar radiation from damaging your tires is to cover them up. Jim Twamley

Whew, what a relief! I really like the shiny, new tire look when I use it. Thanks a bunch.
