RV Now Before It’s Too Late

Ask any former full time RVer who’s now off the road and they’ll give you some sage advice. “Keep RVing as long as you can because once you stop you’re done.” I’m a full time RVer in my early 50’s and I plan to do this till I die, even if it kills me. It makes my heart glad when I see folks in their 80’s and 90’s out RVing. I know they love the great outdoors and their RV magic carpet is the perfect vehicle to bring them enjoyment. I have a friend who is a social worker in a major hospital. Her job is to work with terminally ill patients. She makes friends with these folks and walks with them to death’s door. She’s truly a remarkable person doing a job that most people can’t handle for more than a few months. She’s also a reader of RV Now and all of us here salute you for your selfless dedication to your patients. We were talking about her work last week and she said something that made me have an “Aha” moment. She told me it’s sad people wait until they’re dying before they really begin to live. Think about that for a moment. If you just found out you only had a few months or weeks what would you do differently? Hopefully you’re already maxing out your life’s credit card and wouldn’t need to change much. What RV trip would you take that you’ve always dreamed of? How would it alter you travel plans this year? How would it change your lifestyle? Let’s not wait until the last minute to begin living! Start today because today is really all you have. Give someone an extra hug, call that someone you’ve been meaning to call. Eat at better restaurants. Spend more time with the kids and grandkids. Give your husband an extra kiss. Hold your wife’s hand and present her with her favorite candy. Do the things you’ve always wanted to do like learn how to scuba dive, go on a cruise, get a massage, take a hot air balloon ride, watch more sunsets, or learn to play the ukulele. That wonderful, life enhancing, virtuous thing you’ve been thinking about, dreaming about, that occupies your thought life and makes you smile - go do it! Helping you peg your life’s speedometer before you get pulled over - Jim Twamley, Professor of RVing

  • Hi Jim! I watch every day for your articles and comments. This one today was really great and made us realize that we are doing exactly what we should be doing. We started RV'ing 10 years ago when our three sons were still in college. Hubby retired three years ago, so now we spend 5 months on the road each year, several months in Florida (where we've lived since `79) and then also go on several cruises a year. What a life! We are so lucky and plan to do this until someone has to drag us kicking and screaming out of the motorhome!

  • Sure hope your message gets to the right ears.

We have been Summer RVer's leaving the south for the cooler winds of the east coast and lands north for several years. We found we were home less and less and just made the decision to go full-time.

theMan's dx of lung cancer came at the same time, but you can sell a house, and get on the road while you get chemo and you can get chemo on the road.

We are glad we made the decision to hit the road before the diagnosis. We may not be wandering as much as we expected, but there are places to volunteer, friends to see and we will go as long as we can.

  • Oh Professor, I couldn't agree with you more. Five years ago I had a close encounter with the grim reaper, and since then, I've been trying to live every day as if it were my last. Then when our dog Jerry got cancer, that's when Jim and I said "why wait" for taking a road trip in an RV, "let's do it now!" And that's what we are doing, a pre-retirement RV road trip if you will. We should've done it sooner!

  • We have been RVing since our first pop-top camper. Travel is the ultimate luxoury no matter what vehicle you use.
We meet the nicest people on the road, (because all the sour pusses stay at home).
    We have two rules:
    1) Don't postpone anything,
    and corollery,
    If not now, when?

  • Your sage comments come at the appropriate time. There is much to be done as I go full time including taking that maiden voyage in a Class A but I am in progress. I am still working and have plans to continue working on the road. I am so excited about the possibilities and the adventure itself. Life is good.

  • I have been planning my full-time experience for 2 years now and have 14 months to go. I am eagerly waiting for the day. Thank you for your article, I can't wait for the day. Your pictures are awesome!

  • I enjoyed the article because it reminded me of why we went fulltime in 2005! We are in our early 40's and we feel blessed that we can take this journey. There are obstacles we must overcome because we are still young but we are working them out and hope to share them one day soon!

  • Full time RV'ers can make a living while making a difference. Because of the way we live and travel we are more susceptible to identity theft, moving traffic violations, and unscrupulous people trying to take advantage of us. Learn about a trend that is sweeping the country. log on to www.1wp.com/go/aclary I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you on the road.

  • Jim, You hit it on the head! I'm a retired military veteran and I've faced a few close calls for my country but after living through all that without regret, to come down with, and survive Prostate Cancer, I have decided enough is enough! I have lived in a lot of places but now it is tome to actually see and enjoy them! I can't do it living in a stick and brick house, so i'm fixing up an old MH and by Mar '08 hopefully, I will be headed out prospecting and rockhounding to my hearts content!

  • In 1997, we lost both sets of parents and our last grandparent between June and December. Losing 5close family members highlighted our vulnerabilities and triggered our decision to retire and stay active by traveling our great country.

We launched our "Grand Adventure" in 2000 and have only covered the Eastern and Central time zones.

Plan to do this for another 10 years (or until we can no longer do this safely) covering the rest of the country.

  • I enjoyed reading your article very much . I imagine that not too many people regret not working more but many may regret not seeing and experiencing more or enjoying their friends and family just a little more.

My wife and I have a grown daughter (read no responsibilities) and plans to quit work in Jan 2010 and travel the country by RV and by motorcycle. We have shared our plan with as many people as possible because we feel that the more people that know our plan the more real it becomes.

    happy traveling

  • We have traveled extensively even though we are not fulltiming on the road yet. Right now, we are working in Security at a Casino in Nichols, NY, and living in our RV fulltime. This will be our second winter here and we LOVE it! We have a goal to get on the road fulltime when we meet our financial goals which will be soon. Life is just too short not to live it, that's our motto. If you get to Nichols, NY, park the RV in Tioga Downs' lot and spend the night. Look up Jack and Nancy, we'd love to see you.
