I was drying off from my long luxurious hot shower at the RV park when I heard singing coming from the stall next to me. It wasn’t the best singing I’d ever heard, but it was pleasant enough and it was a sign of a happy camper. So why wasn’t I in my own RV shower? Most modern RV bathrooms come complete with showers.

Sometimes they’re combined with the toilet, shower and sink in one small space like you’ll find in most truck campers.

Other showers are luxurious sporting built-in seats and large enough for two and a half people.

In my view there’s a two-fold problem with RV bathrooms. First, hot water heaters are usually only six to ten gallons and are rapidly depleted by the first person to shower leaving the next person out in the cold. Second, since the majority of RVs only have one bathroom it’s difficult for two people to share at the same time.

This is why I prefer to use the RV park or campground shower facilities. Some park facilities are modest but clean.

Whether they are top of the line or modest, I prefer to use them. I can take a long hot shower and have plenty of room to shave and groom and sometimes you get free entertainment.

I keep my shaving kit and shower supplies in a plastic tub I carry to the shower. If we’re camped at a WalMart parking lot I just wait my turn for the shower but still operate using the same plastic tub.

The reason I like the plastic tub is because sometimes the RV shower facilities where I set the tub are wet from a previous shower. I also keep a clean pair of underwear in my tub and my rolled-up towel as well. The tub keeps everything nice and dry. To prevent picking up a fungus from the shower floor I wear a pair of shower shoes. Some people even carry a small spray bottle of bleach to “sanitize” the shower floor before they step in (they’ve also been known to use this on public toilet seats as well). I think it’s a bit of overkill, but hey, if it makes you feel better why not. So, let’s take an informal survey.

How many of you prefer to use your RV shower and how many of you prefer to use the RV park or campground showers? Click on the light blue word "comments" below and tell us your thoughts. Keeping it clean - Jim Twamley, Professor of RVing and Road Scholar

We,DW, and myself each prefer the rv tub/shower to clean up in. Besides, cold nights kike this make the LONG walk from the rv shower to the bedroom isn't cold.

Oh, it depends. If I'm washing my hair and the park bathroom is nice, I'll use it. There is something really nice about a looooooong hot shower with lots of room. Our rig is nice, with a tub and shower, but it's not that big. Still, we're glad it's not a wet bath...what a hassle.
But if the bathroom is skanky, then forget it, I'll use my own thank you!
I also carry my stuff in a bin, but it's more like a utility bin (from Target) with a handle that allows me to carry different bottles and stuff. Very handy!

Mostly we use the RV shower because of the covenience. When in a resort type park we do use their showers but rarely.

We travel often with another couple and have never had a problem with running out of hot water. Propane water heater takes less than 10 minutes to re-heat the 7 gallons. We have a separate toilet area so my husband and I being in the bathroom area at the same time is a breeze! I'll take the privacy of my RV any day!

One of the benefits of RVing is that we have our own bathroom/shower. Never use the one at the campground.

I use my RV shower. Hubby uses the park facilities. He feels ours is too small. I have a hang-up bag for my supplies.

Nothing like "cleanliness" to bring out comments.
We reside in a 32ft moterhome and alas the shower is also the storage area for the plastic bag bin, the dirty clothes bin, one pair of boots theMan will not give up and some gater-aid that he swears he will be drinking. The broom and a walking stick with a seat attached also live here. It only takes a sec to put this "stash" on the bed to shower, but we find we plan our showers.
We both sort of switch between "their" shower and ours. This depends on where we are and what sort of facility we are using. If we do not have a sewage hook-up, for sure it is theirs, especially if we are staying put for awhile.
We both have "LL Bean" hang-up bags that look, and are, well used. A good "plastic" bag carries the rest of the stuff, like towels and ..........
I wear Keen sandals and can go into the shower with them.
My real dilemma is where do I put the glasses??

Anyone who uses 6 gallons for a shower just wasted 3 gallons. Having been raised to conserve water and then been military where water can be at a premium, what is in the camper is sufficient.
It's one reason why my wife and I moved up from a tent.
We bring our own bedroom and bathroom without the long walk.

If I don't have full hookups then I tend to use the park showers. I like the rv shower but I'm 6'5" and don't really fit in it.
Also, when hooked up it depends on how far of a walk it is and how lazy I feel. But, when I want a long hot shower I go with the park showers.

Count me as one of your disciples. I always use the RV Campground showers. My trailer shower is too confining for me, and frankly, I use it for storage: dog food, buckets, broom, etc. I'm rarely disappointed by the rest rooms and showers at campgrounds.

I'm not sure that I/we "prefer" to use the campground showers, but it is more convienent to do so.
We use the MoHo shoer as a "back up" for the times when the campground showers are either too nasty, or too busy.

Hubby prefers the ready convenience of the RV, and I prefer to use the showers that i am paying for. I do not, however, take long showers, and shame on those of you who do. The responsible use of water and energy is to get wet, soap down while shower is turned off and then rinse as needed. It's time our generation stopoped its self-indulgent behavior and started being better stewards of the earth. Every gallon of water heated produces pollution unless it's heated with solar or wind power. What right do we have to add unnecessary pollution. Even many of us who are skeptical of the dire warnings about global warning know that the simple use of energy is polluting the air we breathe. Then, there is the shameless waste of water, along with the pollution produced by every gallon of water that is treated to make it safe for us.

One convenience of using the park showers that no one has mentioned is that it SAVES CLEANING in the RV! One cleaning a day will do for use of many people. Just be sure to wear your waterproof slippers!

Our shower is not too big and contains the kitty litterbox, so we almost always use the campground shower. They have ranged from primitive to downright luxurious. I have my bag to carry and my shower shoes, and generally the weather is fine. We are right across the street from showers and laundry at our winter RV park in Texas.

I own a Roadtrek..nicest feature is the shower. But, it does take a little posturing to use. Therefore when at a campsite, I use their facilities. If I'm boondocking, well posturing is fine. Thanks for asking.

My wife and I enjoy the convenience and cleanliness of using our own facilities over public campground ones. Hot water has never been an issue as long as one uses a little common sense with regards to water consumption.

I prefer touse my RV shower, If just spending the night and I don't want to hook up I will use the parks facility.

I tend to use the campground shower room, but my DW has been using the shower in the motorhome. If we can both shower at the same time, I finish soon enough to get every thing ready for travel, so it gets us on the road faster.
By

I will use both but mostly the campground shower. I tent camped for 30 years and had no choice but to use the campground showers so I am use to it. My shower is there when I need it though. A $1 pair of shower shoes do the trick.

Motorhome shower. We have no trouble getting two showers and then some from our 6 gal tank. Why on earth would I want to cart all my stuff around in whatever weather when it's all right there in my own shower?
By
SmilingLady, at December 1, 2007 9:24:00 AM PST
Prefer to use campground shower if it is clean. Main reason - don't have to clean up my RV's shower. No steam, no danger of mildew. I still take a bar of soap with a hole drilled in it with a string through it so I can hang it. That way it doesn't drop on the floor and get germie.

We have tent camped and pop-up camped so then the campground shower was the only option. Now we have a shower in our class-A rig and we like the convenience. Our 10 gallon water heater provides more than enough hot water for two "Navy" showers in a row.

We always use our RV shower even though it is not that large. One of the nice things about RVing is never having think about whether or not the bathroom is clean. Ours always is.
Compared to camping it is a lovely luxury to no longer have to wander off through a cold dark campground to find the washrooms!

We own a Pleasure-Way conversion van and DW loves the van's shower and the convenience of not having to shuffle all her "stuff" to the cg. showers. I, find just the opposite, the vans shower is way too small and don't have much room to shower and hold the nozzle, etc.,etc. so I always use the RV site's accomadations.

I normally camp with my three grandsons and always make them use the camp showers. Recently the five year old lost his clothes on the way to the showers. He decided to drop his towel and give some very startled campers a naked dance. He is very proud of his actions dispite all our fussing.

The Bounder's shower is sooooo small and I am big so if we are in a private park we use theirs. KOA does a nice job with showers! However State Park shower rooms are usually really bad so the small MoHo shower needs to do. Glasses....I have a case with a hanger.....works great for glasses in the shower.........

Hi Angie here. My husband and I have had our 4Winds Hurricane pre-owned Class A RV for approximately 16 months. We have used our shower almost every time we've gone out, save for a few times when we had about 5 family members aboard. Both of us are used to spending only about 15-20 min's tops in the shower and both enjoy the water the hotter the better. We've never had a problem with running out of hot water. I'm sure if we stayed in longer the water would begin to cool. Now in all fairness we've both used campground showers to save time and hot water when we have family with us. It IS more spacious but if I had my druthers, I prefer the comfy cozy feeling of my own personal shower. Still, I have no problems using a public shower. We too use a tub and carry the essentials with us! It just requres using good hygiene and common sense.
By
gypsy, at December 1, 2007 4:32:00 PM PST
My own RV shower definitely. I live alone so it and the hot water are all mine. I specifically looked for a rig with a great shower. I will use park showers in winter in cold climates if I have to or when the park shower is really grand.
By
Katrina1, at December 1, 2007 6:31:00 PM PST
We always use our own shower. Wet down, soap up, rinse off. It works for us, unless we have company on the trip---then we all go to the camp ground facilities. We use a back pack (there's always a hook somewhere) for our ditties and of course shower shoes.
By
Anonymous, at December 1, 2007 9:25:00 PM PST
We've been fulltiming for nearly 8 years. We stay without hookups or public bath facilites about 30% of the year. When those facilities are available, we always use them. Let someone else clean, maintain the facility and pay for the hot water.
I calculate that we have now taken about 3,900 showers in public facilities. Neither of us use shower "footware". We have never had a foot infection or fungus.

HUH?! Please DO tell us - when you're in a WalMart parking lot, WHERE are the showers?! (Do WalMart's have showers? More importantly, do ANY of 'em actually allow RVers/customers to USE 'em?!)
Please - DO tell us more!~

Since nobody mentioned it, the real reason a lot of campers use the parks toilets and showers is they are too cheap or tight to spend the few cents for their own propane and toilet paper. Ever notice where the showers and toilets are located in camp grounds? Not in the primitive area for tent campets to use who really need it but close to the full hookup areas where the self contained owners can use them. Been camping in every kind of rig for fifty years and I think I am qualified to make these comments.

Clarification. I don't shower in WalMart, I wait my turn to use our RV shower (Ladies first) you know :)

One of the reasons we bought an RV was to have our "stuff" wherever we went, not chance the cleanliness of some motel. Our first RV had a shower too small for me, but we moved up to a class A with plenty of room. We're both ex-Navy, so we're use to conserving.
By
Steve W, at December 3, 2007 8:46:00 AM PST
Both my wife and I use the campground showers if they are reasonably neat, otherwise our RV shower does fine with a 6 gallon water heater for both of us. Many years on a fishing boat and RV travels to Baja keeps us "water wise".
By
steve c, at December 3, 2007 9:28:00 PM PST
I use the public when warm weather is there. Cold weather...forget it. My wife always uses our coach shower. It is 3 sided with a sit stool and very comfortable. This was one of our prerequisites when buying. Large bath and shower. Very important to us being full timers. As for running out of water, the 7gal tank never runs out of hot water and regenerates in less than 10 minutes.
By
Mark, at December 5, 2007 9:32:00 AM PST
We have a vintage 12'Shasta tin box with a 2-burner stove, kitchen sink and a closet for hanging clothes we use as a "bathroom" for our porta-potty. No shower, no heater. We use a Coleman cat heater, or electric if we're at a site. So, unless we're camping at a wilderness site in the "Dacks or Maine, so we can "bucket shower" outside, we use the campground facilities. But we sure have fun!

We are definately newbies at RVing with our 5th wheel. On a recent trip from NJ to FL we experienced alot with our 3 teenage daughters in tow. I would have to say we used the campgrounds sites about 50/50 depending on cleanliness and odor. Some sites had terrible hot water. Someone made a comment before about the bathrooms not being in primitive sites. I have to say that the $$$ the bigger rigs bring to the park are probably the reason why they are located more in that area. If you think about it, its a business to the campground owners and the bigger the rig the more $$$ money they bring in. I like the convenience of my own but I must say that some of the KOA's we have stayed at were the cleanest and impressive bathrooms I have seen. Even better then a hotels. KOA in Kisseemmee had TV's and were cleaned 2x's daily throughly. I still would use shower shoes and hang stuff. I even use my own cheapie rug to stand on. Its all interesting to read different comments and views. Thanks for sharing we are learning so much from these forums.

Hey, I spent big bucks for my Montana 5'er, especially so I would have my own shower and bathroom and by george, I use them! We conserve water and the hot water has never run out for me or my darling hubby! We plan on full-timing in 2 years and there is nothing like not having to drag all your stuff to a community shower. We will use the public shower when needed, but so far, not needed! TAKE THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED!

We've been pop-up camping for quite a few years and currently have a shower and commode but don't use it due to 'leakage' around the curtain (kids can't seem to just stand and shower...they gotta climb) and heat/humidity we always use the cg showers. Besides, the walk is usually a great time to meet other campers and I found out once my 5 year old was directed back to our site by a camper we met the night before on the walk. (She fell off her bike and was crying.)
