Loose Those Awful Vegas Motel RV Mirrors

The RV industry uses mirrors extensively in RVs because they can make small spaces appear larger (smoke and mirrors). Unfortunately, they often go overboard in their application of mirrors and you may want to remove them. Most mirrors are affixed to the wall and wallpaper with an epoxy type glue. Removing these mirrors is a delicate task requiring a generous amount of patience which they don’t sell at the hardware store. One method is to use a solvent to dissolve the glue such as GooGone, WD-40, Goof-Off or other such products. These solvents when used in conjunction with a heat gun or blow dryer (set on high) will do the trick. You will also need a thin putty knife to help you pry off the mirror. Since you are working with glass there is a possibility you may break it. As a safety precaution I advise putting duct tape all over the mirror to contain the breakage should it occur. With any luck you’ll be able to remove the whole thing without breaking it. You may also want to use leather gloves to prevent cutting yourself. After you’ve removed the mirror you’ll have to decide on a wall treatment. You could use wallpaper, wood paneling, fabric, paint or be creative and glue up some art like that tire tread you found that looks like Elvis. • Leave the mirrors. Save the hassel of taking them off. What do they hurt. If you hate them so much, why did you buy the RV with them?

  • Bob, I didn't say "I hate" mirrors, just that sometimes the RV industry overdoes it in the mirror department. Actually, remodeling your RV is easy and fun. Be creative and change the colors and decor once in a while. Just because the factory put it there doesn't mean you have to keep it there. Just like folks remodel stick houses they also remodel RVs. Thanks for your readership. Jim Twamley, Professor of RVing

  • It's a good idea to wear safety goggles along with the leather gloves. The mirror that you chose for an example is, imho, one of the more tasteful, but mirrors are a bit cheesy after the new wears off.

  • You can also wallpaper the mirrors themselves, or cover them with fabric and a simple paste of heavy laundry starch . Very easy to take of later, with no damage to the mirror, if your want to change the look later...We have done this with apartment walls, and the fabric comes off with a simple sponging and spray soap. Wash the mirror and you can change the fabric any time you want.

  • Jim. Thanks for your article. Our coach is still pretty new, but there are a few things we don't like. Yes! We can remodel, make changes or do what ever we like. It requires a few dollars, a bit of ambition and some imagination to make the rv just the way we want it!
Thanks for sharing ideas with us readers.

  • Wow Jim, with all your critical readers and snipes out there, I'm surprised they let you get away with the word "Loose" instead of "Lose". Whoops, now I sound like a snipe-sorry!~LOL
