RVers Saddle Up in Comfort
RVs and bicycles go together like a ham sandwich and potato chips. Isn’t it amazing that once you learn you never forget how to ride a bike? Bicycles are just plain fun and RVers everywhere enjoy them. We sometimes even go to extremes to bring them along with us.
Some RVers carry bikes on the front of their rigs while most carry them somewhere on the back. I see bicycles in every campground without exception.
In fact, I would like to see more RVers out riding their bikes because it’s great exercise. Unfortunately many folks don’t care much for the seats that are available. Some people have gone to great lengths to make their bicycles more comfortable.
I ran across this seat the other day while shopping at Target. I have no idea how comfortable it is, but it does offer an alternative. Schwinn makes this seat and claims it “limits pressure point contact.”
It’s made from high density foam and costs around $20 bucks. If you’re one of those who doesn’t like the traditional bicycle seat you may want to try this on for size. Helping you stay in the saddle - Jim Twamley, Professor of RVingLabels: Bikes

I got this seat a few months ago. Took some getting used to but I love it now. No more pain in that area after a long ride. probably not for mountain/high performance bikers but for getting to the store - great

Professor, since we started fulltiming in June, our bicycles have gotten so rusty and trashed from sitting on the bike rack of our RV. Do you have any recommendations for bicycle covers that actually work? I'm sad to see my favorite bike get so beat up!

Honestly, I don't have an answer for you. I've seen folks wrap them in tarps and use a "spider web" truck bed bungee to hold it all together. I think some enterprising person could make covers that "zip" over the entire bike. Another alternative would be a plastic bicycle housing cover (problem is bikes come in so many sizes). Some kind of "peelable" sizing might work. I know what you mean, my favorite bike is fighting rust now. Let me know if you come up with the answer. Jim Twamley

Try the Over-sized BBq covers that discount places carry, With some manipulation and a bungee cord or two does great wonders for the bikes and stows easily when not needed.

Try an over-sized bbq cover that the discount places carry. With a bit of re-positioning two bikes get covered. If you browse some come with velcro (handy). a bunge or two and the bikes have a new home. Best part is easy to stoe easy to clean and CHEAP....

Hey that's a good idea about a bbq cover. I know someone who bought a special zip-up type cover for bikes on a bike rack, and he was selling it at a yard sale. Said it didn't fit either his or his wife's bike, and was awkward to put on. I like the bbq cover idea, since it has much more flexibility for different sized bikes. Thanks!

The BBQ bags work great. For the RUST, use some D-5-W. Spray it on and then just wipe it off. It will leave a coating that will help prevent rust. I've done it for years.

Jon: what is D-5-W? Do you mean wd40?

No need to worry about seats, we ride recumbents. The only way to ride.

I love my 'bent too. But I also like my mtn bike. Why do manufactures insist on putting "racing" saddles on them when only 2% actually race?

I've had a seat like this for several years & just love it. I had pretty much given up riding my bike until I found this seat. Now, no more sore spots! Well worth the small investment.

I've used a similar seat for years from a place called Hobson seats (www.hobsonseats.com). Camping World even sells one version of their seat. There's no way I could ride a bike comfortably without a seat like these.
