Absentee RVers Give Quartzsite and Southwest a Wake-Up Call
With his cap off and scratching his head another vendor theorizes that folks are absent this year because of high fuel prices and a lousy economy. Some think Quartzsite is suffering because the city has turned against boondocking RVers and is trying to make Quartzsite into a resort town like Palm Springs. Prime vendor spots have recently been lost to commercial RV dealerships in Quartzsite. But the story doesn’t end in the dust bowl of Quartzsite, the contagion is present all over the south west. Saturday I went to the swap meet at Goodyear a suburb of Pheonix, Arizona.
Last year this place was so packed you had to keep checking your wallet pocket because people were bumping into you at every turn. This year you could fire a cannon down the walkway and not injure anyone.
Vendors here report sales are down more than 50 percent from last year. About one third of the swap meet complex was vacant where last year it was full of vendors.
Something is wrong and I’m not sure what it is. 2008 could be the slowest RV season ever here in the south west. Keeping my fingers on the pulse of the RV scene - Jim Twamley, Professor of RVingLabels: RV Lifestyle, RV Shows

Yet, here in the Imperial Valley, El Centro, the RV parks are at or near full. They are mostly from Northern US and Canada, and many have come here for many years. Also, RV traffic in the area is down significantly. This simply by observation by me. Apparently, discretionary travel has taken a huge hit. Could it also be that the new diesel fuel's greater cost on top of the general increase might be a factor?

I saw a story on CNBC about a month or so ago, which said that RV sales is sort of the canary in the coal mine for the economy. That every time there's a downturn in RV sales, the economy follows.

Well you wouldn't know it's a slow season here in Florida. RVers are crammed in everywhere, on both sides.

I put in a comment about 3-4 years ago where Quartzsite is almost gone as the mayor is trying to turn that place into a Palm Springs (haha)!! And since then the city council has made all the vendors pay more and more taxes and to top it off the old flea market is gone as now the vendors must havwe a cement floor set up almost like a permanent building. Now you can go to Harbor Freight to but the same stuff.
Plus Quartzsite neighbors from thei,r west border (Ca.) have bought up the Rv. Parks and have raised the rent to where the person on a fixed income cannot afford to stay there.
All I can say is: Good-Bye Quartzsite !!! There are more places to go, so being greedy will be your demise!!!

I have to agree with oldfart... It looks like the city fathers in Q are trying to kill the goose that lays the golden egg. Everytime you turn around there is a tax on the tourist.

We are from Idaho and stay in the LTVA from Oct 15 until around the 1st of April. This year, the old skinny lady that works at the Roadrunner market said, in a very loud voice, "I wish these snowbirds would all go home!" That was the last day I shopped there. We get gouged with everything from groceries to fuel to propane and just keep bending over for more but I now shop in Yuma and will probably reside there next year. Q needs to wise up, their town will be a dustbowl within a very short time. The Chamber of Commerce estimated vendor business down between 50 and 80%.

Just a quick note to warn other snow birds of the pitfalls while in Quartzsite for the winter. Last year a gentleman from Canada had the waterpump go out on his Ford diesel pickup. The fan ate up the fan belt and then fell off and made a horriable noise. He had the unit towed to a tire shop that done repairs in back. The Mechanic?? or so he called himself told him that the waterpump was $499.95 for a rebuilt and the labor would be about $200.00 to put it on. And the belt would be another $85.00. When I heard about this I mentioned that I had been a mechanic for over 45 years and would like to take a look at the truck. When we arrived at the tire shop, the mechanic? said that was the minium cost and that there was a lot of hidden damage that we couldn't see. I ask if it was hidden how did he know there was any additional damage? The Mechanic said "I've been working on cars long enough to know." So my Canadian friend and I said "hold off until we get back to you." We then called the NAPA store in Blythe and ask how much for a pump and belt. The pump was $245.50 for a new one and the belt was $49.00. Well we made a quick trip to Blythe picked up the parts and then towed his truck out in the desert and I put the pump on in about an hour and half. What i'm trying to tell folks is that there is alot of scammers and cheats here in Quartzsite that pray on us snowbirds. Just because we're old, that don't mean we are stupid and don't know what we are talking about. When getting work done on your rv, or car, shop around and ask other people who they would recommend. After all we haven't been retired all our life. We used to work and still know what's BS and what is real.

I can certainly comment from the vendor's view, tho never in Q. (We looked around several years ago and determined that it was just too dirty for our product!)
At this time in our lives, retired but with a small vendor business, we were hoping to be doing less shows but have had to add more instead. And we had to raise our prices but can't get them high enough to pay for gas and the increased price of product. Of course, the manufacturer had to raise prices because they had to pay for THEIR GAS!
It seems to me that the oil companies (I'm sorry; this was supposed to be about Quartsite, but it is really about the gas, isn't it?) are trying to break the will of the American people, so we will be happy to pay ONLY $3 or $3.50 for a gallon, while the poor, unfortunate Canadians and Europeans have to pay even more.
I am sick of the whole thing!
Older But Wiser (but it doesn't help in this case)

The Roadrunner market in Quartzsite refused me service Monday after I gave the the wench at checkout a bit of vituperation over their requirement that I check my backpack at the door.
I'd entered the store with my green shopping sack, the one with the zipper pocket emblazoned Maine Public Radio, hanging from my arm and walked to and fro past checkout twice whilst looking down the aisles for the ephemeral box of matches. (The General Store has only the strike on box kind. I found strike anywhere kind in Roadrunner however they are not Diamond or Ohio; made in Chile it says on the box, but that's another storey.) Back at checkout and this woman starts out not with "Find everything Ok?", or "Will that be all?" But launches right into "Next time leave your backpack at the door-see the sign", as she points and scowls.
First off my empty shopping bag is not a backpack. Secondly they do not require women entering their store to check their handbags. Are they tacitly calling me a thief? Is this an instance of sexual harassment, gender discrimination? The conversation went downhill from there, I was too quickly--again--angry. There won't be a next time my dear; I don't shop places which impugn my character before I've had a chance to do it for my Self. Even as I had my wallet out and money in hand she moved the box of matches aside and told me I could shop elsewhere. Are you refusing me service then? Business may be down this year, perhaps it is not down far enough.

me and my wife are from Wi. and trying to retire. we heard about quartzsite and decided to try and get together a little "swap meet business" to supplement our savings. we arrived second week in dec. with our class a motorhome packed with stuff to sell, and upwards of $20k. we left with a 1/2 tank of gas and $60. everything in very expensive and the fees and taxes and permits go on forever. the vendor spot we rented was supposed to be $450/month. In jan. management came to us and said "prime time" was about to start and they charged an extra $750 for the 3 week event. after the "event" we were charged another $450. same thing again in march. Management stated during "prime time" they avertised and drew in over a million people. Ha HA.
At the same time I had several "locals" in the grocery stores and gas stations complain about the snowbirds. Like many people they don't seem to know where their paychecks are coming from. (this includes "ALL" public and elected officials).
In the future we may go through quartsite, but I promise you we will never be vendors. Quartzsite is another city that has no business being there. everything, everything has to be brought in and out of the dirty dirty dustbowl. If the GREED continues, and I don't see it changing, I predict quartzsite will again become a desolate, deserted nothing. And you know what: that's what they deserve.

The thing is q was there before there were any snowbirds and will be there long after. Talk about greed - RVers expect to pay nothing when they get here because they "are on a fixed income", however, they can spend 20K on items u can find at the dollar store, they can spend 100K on their class a rv and the fuel to get here. They do not want to pay rent, they do not want to pay taxes, they do not want to pay for anything - u came here because of some reason - and now it's a dust bowl? u were looking for a dust bowl when u found q! Also Q is 100 miles from anywhere - away from the crowds, crime, smog, lines, etc. however - we are really lucky to have anything here; the locals appreciate that we don't have to drive 100 miles to get groceries, yes it costs more - but look where q is! I appreciate the RVers who come here however - everyone can wear out their welcome as well. Who keeps all these businesses running when u "go home"?
