Flying J Restricts RV Fuel Discount

Flying J must be feeling the pinch at the pump because they have recently restricted the RV fuel discount. Previously you received a one cent discount at the pump for each gallon of fuel by using the loyalty card. As of the first of March you now must purchase food or merchandise in order to receive the discount and you don't get the discount until the following month. Funny, they were courting RVers this year at the FMCA rallies to get this "Free" loyalty card so we could save money - now it's a different story. It's in rule #6 which you can read at their website here Flying J. This is what it says, "RV Real Value monthly fuel discount level is determined by prior months restaurant and merchandise purchases (refer to RV Real Value discount schedule)." I don't know about the rest of you, but if I see a cheaper price at Pilot or TA or another truck stop - guess what? So much for loyalty! Keeping you informed and keeping money in your wallet - Jim Twamley, Professor of RVing.

  • I guess giving a $0.90 discount on a purchase in excess of $325.00 is just WAY TOO MUCH sacrifice!

  • Saving a penny a gallon was a joke to begin with. Buy 50 gallons and save 50 cents? Big deal! Now they want us to jump through hoops to save that huge amount? What genius came up with that marketing idea? I won't be stopping.

  • At the moment the fuel suppliers are having their way with us. But for 10+ years up to about 3 years ago we have our way with them. And in about another 3-5 years after the conservation efforts take hold there will all of a sudden be too much fuel chasing too few users. The wild card is the carbon stuff, global warmning or no global warming, that is the question???? So you just have to, right now, pay up and try to smile.

  • Next they won't let me use my 5% cash back AMEX card on fuel purchases... I used to have some respect for FlyingJ for the attitude towards RV'ers.

  • Using the RV card you still will get the cash price using your CC. That alone is worth the stop there.
Never mind that they are usually the cheapest price in the area.

  • I was told that AMEX cash back card now has a limit of 75 gallons for any one transaction. Their phone rep actually suggested that I go thru the diesel line multiple times if I needed more than 75 gallons to fill up. This is not very realistic with a line of 18 wheelers behind me while I go into the Flying J office to authorize a second transaction to fill my 100 gallon diesel motorhome. So this means that we have to stop more often to take full advantage of the AMEX cash back card--not very customer friendly.

  • I have found that fuel is usually less expensive across the street from Flying J. Lately they have been as much as 10 cents higher than the station on the next corner.

  • Good Sam Club members can get a little sticker with a bar code (from Good Sam) that goes on the back of their membership card that provides a .02/gal discount at Petro stations. So far, though, I've not found a Petro station that offers a price that's .02 or less higher than neighboring stations, but I keep looking. My .02!

  • Most credit cards, and some gas stations themselves, have a dollar amount limit at gas pumps. It used to be $100 but now it seems to be $75. You don't have to pull out and circle back around...just swipe the card through the reader again and keep pumping. Inconvenient, yes, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the limits even tighter as the prices continue to escalate.

  • We've found Flying J to be ever less competitive on fuel prices for the past year, even WITH their 1 cent discount. They do offer the free dump and water, and still have good propane prices.... IF you can get propane. We were forced to pay more recently when Flying J had no certified propane techs on duty on weekends, after the previous Flying J had NO propane. We usuallyt use Walmart, Sam's Club and Costco for gas now....and check GasBuddy.com for better deals in an area.

  • We just returned home from a 7 week trip from California to Key West. All but 2 of our stops were at Flying J. We check fuel prices online as we go. Flying is most always less than Petro, Love's, Pilot. And with the Flying J card you get cash price and can use a credit card. We use a Discover that gives us 5% on first $100 a month (recently changed from a more generous program) then 1% on every dollar thereafter. Diane& Dick

  • I consider the free Dump Station and parking at Flying J to be a much stronger reason to patronize them. Never stopped just for the discount, so will continue to show them preference.

  • I don't mean to be rude Mike and Vicki but have you ever seen what is across the street from "The Hook" in Winslow, AZ? Think sagebrush and you will be on the right track.
