True Confessions of an RVer and Fisherman

Many RVers like to fish and some of the greatest fishing spots also boast great RVing. The last two weeks I've been fishing off several piers in Corpus Christi, Texas. I caught a small hammerhead shark, several gaff top (they look like blue catfish), who knows how many perch, an eel, several sand trout and two speckled sea trout. I threw them all back except one of the sea trout which I brought home and turned into fish tacos. My Texas out of state license cost $60 bucks, throw in another $40 bucks for bait and tackle and this fish taco cost me $100 bucks. I could have eaten lobster tacos all week for that! Since sport fishing really doesn't pay for itself why do it? To be honest I'm not sure why I do it other than I enjoy it. Why do people fork out money for all kinds of hobbies that don't pay for themselves? I've thought about giving up fishing and taking up golf, but after seeing how much it costs to play I think I'll stick with fishing. Working all the angles - Jim Twamley, Professor of RVing

  • Hobbies are to enjoy, and to provide escape from the daily buzz. You shouldn't worry about the cost of doing something you enjoy, unless you really CAN'T afford it. But fishing? I carry a selection of rods and reels under my RV (some for the grand kids, too), and if I want to fish, all I need to do is find some bait, break out the rods, and fish! Maybe you're not going prepared enough to support your hobby. I also like photography, and of these days use a digital camera (Canon EOS Rebel XT), complete with a variety of lenses, tripod, extra batteries, etc. I carry a laptop computer along, to which I can download all my shots, edit, store and, because we also have a Kodak Easyshare printer, print out any that we want to send to relatives in the mail. What about art? I love to use watercolors and oils, and by packing a few essentials (paints, brushes, a few canvases, water color paper) I'm always prepared for the moments when I just want to relax and splash some color on a white surface. Hobbies like golf, which I also enjoy, can be very expensive if you only go to the more expensive courses. But if you look for links courses, or municipal courses, you can often find great deals and enjoy your golf on the cheap. In short, whatever your pleasure, hobbies are meant to provide release -- of pressure, from connections to every day hassles, escape from phones and newspapers or annoying people, whatever. Enjoy your free time and think of it -- whatever you pay for it -- as one of life's little embellishments. Mike.
