Are RVs under electronic freeway surveillance?
Do you realize how many times your RV is scrutinized as you journey along to your next RV destination? Hidden in the pavement are sensors that report data to state highway departments. Thousands of sensors are located on roadways throughout the country. These sensors are attached to poles and overpasses and embedded in the pavement and include passive infrared, active infrared, passive magnetic, Doppler microwave, radar, passive acoustic and pulse ultrasonic not to mention photo and video. It’s a fact of life, modern travelers live in an era of increasing electronic surveillance. Most surveillance equipment gathers information like frequency of use, vehicle weight, traffic congestion and helps state and local transportation departments improve overall road quality.
Most of you have see these alien looking objects reaching over freeways across America but don’t have a clue what they are. I thought they were speed measuring devices and always checked to make sure I was legal when driving under them. I contacted Shelly Haney at the Indiana Department of Transportation and it turns out these devices are actually “PrePass” transponder readers. “These are deployed before our weigh stations as part of the PrePass program. There are 10 scale locations in Indiana, all of which have the PrePass equipment,” she said.I was talking to members of the trucking industry while attending a commercial truck rodeo and discovered these “PrePass” transponders are saving truckers thousands of dollars each year. Trucking companies pay a monthly subscription fee which allows them to participate in the program. Each truck is then equipped with a transponder which sends a signal identifying the truck. There are weight reading sensors embedded in the road and when the truck passes by the “PrePass” transponder reads their ID and allows them to continue without having to waste time and fuel pulling into the weigh station. If they are overweight a signal tells them to turn off for inspection. It’s a good thing they don’t require RVs to do this otherwise there would be long lines of RVs at weigh stations. Yes we are being targeted. The Government thinks anyone who can afford to drive an RV with gas at $4.50 must be rich enough to pay a traffic ticket.
Soon there will be mass RV-jackings because driving an RV will be like wearing a Rolex in the barrio.
Spread the word, S. 2958 will solve our energy problems and this organization has a lower gas prices petition supporting S. 2958. Check it out and please spread the word:

Who other than us RVers are suffering more from these gas prices?

I am confused...what does this article have to do with traffic cameras as the lead in suggests??

Quit sending our Alaska oil to the Pacific rim countries and we will not have to drill in the Arctic. We have been sending "our" oil to Japan and other countries since 1992 when oil was $10 a barrel. My representative, Dick Shamkus, did not even know this until I told him, but then he is also owned by the oil companies.

The "PrePass" transponders and the cameras we drive under are two entirely different tools used to track us. If you are going to discuss cameras, please discuss the cameras.

All of "us" are suffering from increased gas prices, it doesn't just affect the RV users. The greatest impact is on the American Truckers, the men and women who spend every day of thier lives trying to earn a living delivering our staples and luxuries of life.
RV'rs are the least affected by these prices, because for most RV'rs, driving is an OPTION, not a necessity. There are always exceptions to any broad statement, but for the most part, RV'rs are near the bottom of the affected list.
IF, we American's had as much foresight as we do hind sight and IF we were as "PROactive" as we are reactive our country wouldn't be in such a severe petronomic situation.
There are alternatives to these high fuel costs, but most Americans believe that its the "OTHER" guys responsibility to do something, NOT him/her.
Wake up America, your lives, economy and future is changing right before your eyes... pay attention and plan ahead.

Writer may not know what a camera is! A camera is used to take pictures, not speed or weight or length- but could if set up to do so.
Why not us an appropriate title rather than a misleading one?

suckered me to your blog by "camera" discussion won't happen again

Some of you are right it wasn't about a camera like the title said. However it was also not about fuel prices either so where did that subject come from HUMMMMM

How many of us would have read an article titled "Prepass Transponders" ?

A more common sight for many drivers are the actual cameras and camera lookalikes seen on traffic signal masts.
Some are used as detectors that see your vehicle waiting for a red light and tells the signal controller to give you a green light a little sooner than it normally might. Keep in mind theres a computerized system that considers your needs vs traffic on the other legs. But the goal is to move everyone along as efficient as possible.
These same systems can also change the synchronization of a whole series of lights along the way as traffic flows change throughout the day.
Other gadgets on signal arms are infrared sensors emergency vehicle and signal as they approach to give them green lights through the intersections.
Then there are the infamous red-light cameras that take your mugshot if you stray through on Red. You know who you are.(And so do they).
Hope that satisfies all of those who were hoping for a real camera article.

RVers do not have to travel for a living like the truckers do but it does effect us all that is for sure. We can blame this directly on our own government for allowing every special interest group to stop all drilling & refineries in the US so that we are dependent on terrorist countries that hate us & want nothing more than to break the US & they are doing a good job of it. Our congress people are too busy lining their own pockets & do not care one bit about the country Wake up America & vote these scoundrels out of office before there is no longer America the Free

Dont know where the topic of cameras came from, makes no sense to me but as for oil prices, we can directly blame our very own congress for their stupidity in allowing every special interest group there is to stop all drilling & refineries in the US so we are totally dependent on terrorist countries that hate us & want to break us & are doing a darned good job of it. Wake up America before it is too late & make our government take care of us & not the terrorists but they are too busy lining their own pockets & do not care one whit about the country. These are scarey times we live in & we need to wake up fore it is too late to do anything about it

If you actually read the body of the letter "photo & video" ARE mentioned. Why all the hostility anyway?

Jim's main concept in this article is "Big Brother". We are monitored for everything we do and to a certain extent what we say. The government knows everything about us from cradle to grave. Freedom is gradually away.

Great Work Jim, I enjoy your columns no matter what you write about. You're a very smart guy and have given me tons of info through your columns and how-to videos.
I'm sure many people had no idea what those large overhanging poles with some sort of device were all about. You're a great guy in my book, plus your name is JIM!!

I had to leave my RV in Alaska where high gas prices were the norm long before anyone on the outside started complaining and I will go back eventually and get it. However, I now live overseas and if I don't purchase my gas at a military facility which, fortunately I can do, I will pay upwards of $10.00 a gallon. My neighbors do not have the military option, have been paying more then $7.00 a gallon for a very long time and are surprised that we have gotten this far on cheap fuel. I don't know what the article had to do with cameras either, but I like the weekly articles and will continue to follow them.

We are from Pennsylvania and got a quick education about cameras when we ventured down to Dallas, Texas, to visit friends in the northern suburbs. First, we missed the out-of-towner toll booth, off to the right of the expressway, as we were in a line of traffic and could not shift lanes quickly enough. Then, of course, we passed under or over sensors. From our friend's house, we called the Dallas freeway authorities and were told not to worry about once such mishap; if we got a ticket at home to ignore it. We also learned that most Dallasonians use a credit card account and sensors to automatically pay their daily tolls on those very expensive freeways. Sounds like progress and real innovation, but it is scary what "big brother" can do with his electronic gadgets. We RVers should stick together and make sure we get fair treatment.

Thanks for the info, Jim. I'm not sure what inspired all the vitriol from the trolls, but I appreciate the time and effort you put into your blog. Happy Father's Day!

As always nice info to know. Yes some of the article was about things other than cameras, wow, I had no idea that it was that important to know your being watched!!! I just assume it.
All the vitriol regarding little content regarding cameras and more about sensors, "folks Cameras ARE sensors.... Visual ones. That somebody started this off by hijacking the conversation with thier political ramblings is in my opinion worse.
As for the politicians you love to bash, YOU elected em, if you don't like em, elect someone different.

These high fuel prices are not effecting RVer but small business people who can barly afford to pay those prices. It will put a lot of small businesses out of business.
Wake up American before it is too late. You don't like goverment watching you and knowing everything you do then vote for the "right." One of our canidates wants more goverment control on everything we do. Guess who?
Also want to tax the oil companies more, guess what that will do to fuel prices!!!

These high fuel prices is effecting small business owners too! They can barly operate now. Lot of them will go out of business.
Big brother watching is here. If you don't want the goverment controlling more of your life then vote for the "Right". One canidate wants to tax big oil companies more. Guess who will pay more for fuel for that!!! The oil companies will pass that on to the people at the pump and for heating cost. This canidate wants more goverment control in our everyday lives. Wants gun control and so many things that will take away our freedoms.

Just a dumb old machinist here from what I have been seeing on the news and else where the biggest reason for high fuel price is coming from wall street and their futures they keep running up the price of crude maybe if we could limit their activity so much we wouldn't be in this mess
