RV sign language saves time and space

Roger Conley (left) and his friend Richard (both from Reese Michigan) joke around at a recent Coachmen rally. Like many RVers Roger wanted to display he and his wife's name and where they are from. Nancy and Roger were relaxing under the awning one day and came up with this brilliant idea. Instead of the usual hand carved sign, he attached a weatherproof sign to the side of his slide-out. He used rivets to hold the sign in place and it it slides in and out past the rubber gaskets no problem. He doesn't have to store a sign every time he breaks camp or remember to put it out when he sets up. It's a self deploying "automatic" sign that's easy to install. You can make the sign yourself or have a sign shop make one for you. If you have an unusually long name and a short slide, you have a problem, but you could always run it vertically.

  • Great info. for would be thieves cruising campgrounds. They now know that Roger and Nancy from Reese Michigan are not at home and fair game.

  • That's a nice sign BUT, the idea has been out there for at least 15years. That's how long I have had my sign on my slideout.

  • Bill, How right you are, but I wouldn't be so much much worried about the guy that lives 1,500 miles from me as I would the guy that notices my large trailer missing from my property for several weeks.

  • We are not anxious for anyone to know our names if we have not personally given them the information. What happens, when some night there is a knock at the door and a voice saying, "Hey, Roger, it's me. I need a hand out here." Good ole' Roger opens the door and presto---instant access to you, your loved ones and any goodies you may be carrying in your RV. No thanks, I will stay anonymous and find out who it is at the door. • Great info for would be thieves who now know that Roger and Nancy are far from home, may be full timers, and likely have some good stuff in their RV worth viewing.

  • Sad to see such concerns about theft and break ins because someone finds an interesting way to display their names. Having full timed for 2 years and owned an RV Park for 10 years we never experienced such obvious angst about a name plaque. Perhaps it is living in Wyoming where crime is low, but still sad to see the majority of comments leaning in the direction they have.

We think the idea is great and compliment the folks for displaying it.

  • I have no problem with names displayed. When in a park for an extended time, having names displayed makes it much easier to remember who is who.

I belive, too, that the fears exhibited by others are unfounded. Of course, we have never been in a park where we felt threatened. I guess we have been blessed to be in parks where we don't.

Another option is to just put your first names, city and state. Frankly, if someone is looking for people who might have valuables in their RV, just look for the people with a map of where they have traveled. They are usually people who carry much with them.

  • Our out front sign is engraved with only our first names and larger well known city area, doubt anyone could locate our residential property, since we have a toy hauler even though we travel 6-12 weeks at a time don't think it is to tempting especially when we have two very well behaved and trained dogs (a Schiperke and Rottweiler service dog for my husband) who we have been told become very alert and protective when alone in the trailer and someone comes around. I wouldn't exchange anominity in the campground or resort for the friendly conversations our home base sign strikes up.
