Big California RV dealer reverses plan to close all stores

California RV dealer Dan Gamel has decided not to close its Anderson RV dealership. In June, Gamel announced that he would liquidate his inventory and close all his stores once the inventory was gone. Since then, he's reportedly sold $35 million in RVs and brokered a deal with Coachmen to be a factory outlet center. That helped him save the Anderson dealership. He will also keeps stores open in Fresno, Modesto and Rocklin. Stores in Chico, Santa Rosa, Bakersfield, Yuma, Ariz., and his Camp America location in Fresno have closed.

As a Coachmen outlet, Gamel says he won't absorb many traditional dealer costs because he doesn't own the inventory -- Coachmen does. He says he can thus afford smaller markups for each vehicle. In June, Gamel said the cost of keeping inventory on the floor that wasn't moving and his difficulty securing loans for working capital led him to decide to close his dealerships.
