For nine years, we have brought you our free weekly RVtravel.com newsletter. Our support comes mostly from sales at RVbookstore.com.
Yet only a small percentage of our readers have ever made a purchase
there. We would like to ask the rest of you to please consider pledging a subscription donation -- either one time or whenever you wish. No matter how small, it will help us keep going and growing and will be hugely appreciated by our hard-working staff. This is a purely voluntary contribution and not necessary to continue reading the newsletter.

Editor's corner
By Chuck Woodbury
Dear reader,
Have you seen the TV program "Hoarders?" It's about people with a compulsion to hoard just about everything. Nothing gets thrown away. According to the program, three million people in America qualify as "hoarders."
Horders' homes become so cluttered that the residents can barely move. A recent episode profiled a Phoenix woman whose condo was so filled with stuff (mostly junk) that the largest available space to eat, watch TV or simply relax was on one double bed in the living room. Her two kids' bedrooms were too packed for them to even reach their beds, much less sleep there. And so they slept on couches in the living room.
I don't think many RVtravel.com readers are hoarders. This newsletter is read mostly by avid RVers -- those who travel a lot throughout the year. More than half of you travel at least two months a year. More than a third of you travel four months or more. About 12 percent live in your RVs full-time.
I believe one of the best feelings associated with RVing is the freedom we experience when we are away from all our "stuff." Before we head out on a trip, we pare down what we need to a bare minimum. Those 20 pairs of shoes in our home closet get cut down to two or three. We bring six favorite shirts and leave 60 others at home -- same with jackets -- one or two instead of the dozen at home. Our big stereo system shrinks to a pocket-sized iPod. Our bulky family picture albums are digital, viewable on flickr.com in cyberspace.
It's impossible to be a serious hoarder when you spend much of your time in an RV. Even though I am not a hoarder myself -- pretty much the opposite -- I love the simplicity of my life in my RV where my collection of "stuff" is a fraction of what it is back home. As I have said before, if my home in Washington were to burn to the ground while I was traveling with my motorhome, I wouldn't lose much that I would ever miss: What matters most to me would be in my RV. What about you? Leave a comment in our reader forum.

Financially desperate Arizona closes more state parks
The Arizona State Parks Board voted unanimously Friday, Jan. 15, to close 13 additional Arizona's state parks in response to budget cuts. The move leaves two-thirds of the state's parks closed including some popular RV destinations. The action shuts down some of Arizona's Old West landmarks including Tombstone Courthouse and the Yuma Territorial Prison. Some parks will close almost immediately. The last round of closures will come in June when the popular RV camping destinations of Picacho Peak, Lost Dutchman and Alamo Lake will close along with others. Read more including which parks will remain open.
Closing a state park has big repercussions
Lost Dutchman State Park is just one of many Arizona state parks that will be shut down by Arizona because of the state's money problems. This television news report shows how such a closure affects the park's patrons as well as the local economy.

How to keep your truck camper warm
Keeping warm in the winter in your truck camper can be a tricky exercise. Insulation values for truck campers vary widely, both by manufacturer and age of the rig. Where you go is another story, too, since truck campers are more on the line of "go anywhere" rigs, it's not uncommon to find their owners tooling them around in the snow country. Read more.
Can you trust your RV's gauges?
Somewhere in your RV is a control panel where, with the push of a button, you're told the status of your RV tanks -- fresh water, gray water, black water, propane level and electrical battery charge. Many RVers are dismayed when they find those tell-tale readings don't always tell the truth. What's the deal?

WEBCAST NOTICE: Gary will appear on a live webcast next Saturday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m., Pacific Time. Check this newsletter that morning for where to view it.
The RV Doctor, Gary Bunzer, answers your questions.
Dear Gary,
My electric bill at the RV parks are about three times higher than my neighbors. My refrigerator and converter should be the only things drawing 120-volts AC. All my lights are 12-volt DC. My electric bill runs about $130 a month while my neighbors have bigger rigs plus a wife, which I don't have. Their usage runs about $35 or $40 per month. My batteries are only two years old. How can I test amp draw on the refrigerator and convertor? --John

Dear Gary,
I
have a 26-foot motorhome in excellent condition except we had a leak in an upper window of cabover that rotted wood in the front and lower section of cabover. Local dealers tell me the cost to repair it is in excess of value of unit and haven't even quoted a repair cost. They only show me their new models. Is this worth repairing? Do I have to depend on dealers who will try to sell me another unit rather than help me fix mine? Is this type of repair more difficult? --Christi

News from Quartzsite, Ariz., the Southwest Boondocking Capital
RV loads of snowbirds finally arrive
Two weeks ago, Quartzsite vendors were wondering if something had gone wrong. Where were all the customers? To be sure, there were some folks wandering the tents in venues like Rice Ranch, but there were no great hordes. But it all changed, right about January 4. Countless rigs began to swarm in from nearly all directions. The town's main street, oddly enough called Main Street (but best known by most as "The B-10"), became a major traffic bottleneck. Burnt up slide motor
Anyone ever have to replace the slide motor in a travel trailer? I need
to replace the one in a 2003 Innsbruck by Gulfstream. The dealer says
it will cost $459 plus shipping. Any other ideas out there?
Stabilizer jacks
We have a Class A motorhome that does not have stabilizer jacks. We
often park for long periods of time in one place and experience a lot
of rock 'n roll while moving around the coach. Does anyone have an idea
how we could stabilize our rig without installing a complete hydraulic
jack system? Are there jacks on the market made for this purpose that
can be used on a motorhome?
Public land-size of fifth wheel
Before we spend money to buy wrong rig (fifth wheel)! My wife and I are
a year closer to get a rig for boondock full-timer. We would like to
snowbird each year on public land. What would be the best length FW to
go with?
What is causing all the constant squeaking and rattling?
Two days ago I spent my saved up money on a 2000 29-foot Tioga class C
and when we went to take it for a ride today, the squeaking all over
was severe, loud, and non-stop. It even squeaks if it's parked and I
walk in it with the motor off. I also noticed a swaying rocking motion
when my husband drove it. Would these things be caused by the
suspension and if so, what parts of the suspension? My husband would
like to do the repairs himself but where do we start?
Best venue to sell rig
We want to sell our Class C. I want to know the best way to market it
and sell it "without getting personally involved." Meaning, I don't
want to put a sign or ad, then drive around with strangers or let
strangers drive it with me in it. I am thinking of consignment, but not
all of them are trustworthy. Is there another way to do sell that I
haven't thought of?

Trivia
There are about 150,000 moose on the island of the Canadian province of Newfoundland. They are so plentiful they occasionally wander through the streets of downtown St. John's. The moose are believed to be descended from only four animals that were introduced to the island in 1904. On average, two people are killed every year in moose-vehicle crashes.
