Editor's corner
With Chuck Woodbury
Greetings again and welcome to the 440th issue of this newsletter. I'm on a short trip now with my daughter in eastern California -- taking photos, gathering material for stories and goofing off in the wide-open, lightly populated lands south of Reno, Nevada and north of Bishop, California along the eastern edge of the Sierra mountains.

I'm happy to announce the first installment of Mike Sokol's series on RV electric safety. I highly recommend you read these finely written articles, appearing once a week for the next 12 weeks. What you learn could prevent you from being shocked by your RV -- and worse case -- dying from the shock. Read the first article in the series, Understanding and Preventing RV Electric Shocks.
Why this is important: A 10-year-old Missouri boy died this month when he tried to open the door to a motorhome and was electrocuted. Read the story.

STAYING IN REST AREAS
Awhile back, driving I-90 across Washington late at night, I observed at least two or three RVers holed up in each rest area. Some were sandwiched in between 18-wheeler trucks, others were off by themselves. I've stayed at rest areas a few times through the years, but only when I was so tired that I was about to fall asleep. Each time, I woke up after a few hours and went on. I have never been comfortable "camped" in these places. Yet some RVers do it all the time. What do you think about the practice? Do you do it? Do you feel safe? Ever had any bad experiences? Please take a minute to answer this ten second survey. Please leave a comment.

Hundreds die each year from under inflated tires
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), under inflated tires contribute to 660 fatalities and 33,000 injuries each year. Other government research shows that about one in four passenger cars and nearly one in three light trucks have at least one significantly under inflated tire. "Heat is a tire's number-one enemy," said Dan Zielinski of the Rubber Manufacturers Association. "Under inflated tires cause heat buildup that can damage tires and lead to failure. If you combine that with hot summer temperatures and fully loaded vehicles traveling at highway speeds, you could be at risk for tire failure." Learn ten ways to make your RVing safer.
Selling your RV? Be careful!
When we're shopping for an RV, there's all kinds of helpful advice to keep us out of trouble. Few RVers think about the trouble they can get into when selling an RV. Yet, the problem is real -- even sellers can get taken in by unscrupulous folks. So here's your Latin brush up for the day: Caveat venditor -- let the seller beware! Read more.
Don't take your fire extinguisher for granted
All RVs have a fire extinguisher near the door. One could assume that it is located there so you can grab it on your way out the door! However, what happens if you are in the bedroom when a fire breaks out? Find out.

How to inspect your RV for water damage
If there is a way to get in your RV, water will find it. Water leaks on
an RV can cause extensive damage and can be extremely costly to repair. Here are some ways to check your RV for water damage and how to prevent it in the first place.
The once lonely road no longer lonely
At age 30, Dave Williams' world turned upside down. "Divorce happens, and when one is young it truly seems to be the end of all that matters," he writes. Now, half his life later and remarried, he and wife Carolann enjoy traveling in their motorhome. But sometimes Dave travels alone. What he learned back in those lonely days of long ago has enabled him to enjoy his solo journeys today. Read more.
RV fire spreads to house
Where the heck was the fire department to put out this RV fire? And why didn't somebody stop with a fire extinguisher? Or a neighbor try to douse it with a garden hose? By the time the fire crew arrived, the RV fire had already spread to its owner's home. Watch the video.
How to "read" your RV tires to know if they're too old
The useful life of a tire is only five to seven years. For cars and trucks driven every day, the tread usually wears out in less than five years. For RVs that sit for a good part of the year, five years can pass with a lot of tread still left on the tire. Although you may not want to replace what looks like a perfectly good tire, riding on tires more than five years old greatly increases the risk of a blowout. Read more.

Be careful towing downhill: that's when accidents happen
Eighty percent of all towing related accidents happen when you're traveling downhill. It takes approximately three times longer to stop than if you were on a flat surface and the greater your speed the greater the stopping distance required. Here are a few tips for towing on downgrades.
What really saves fuel?
While gas and diesel prices aren't out of hand, they're still higher than last year at this time. If history is any indicator, fuel prices can shoot for the moon without much notice. It's no wonder RVers are concerned with how to get the best fuel economy: enter the shadowy world of the "fuel economizer" salesmen. Can you really believe the claims they make?
Why being careless with RV electricity can be deadly dangerous

ABCs of RVing:
For absolute beginners and
RV novices only.
QUESTION: My husband and I started RVing last year and so far he has done all the driving. I tell him I would like to drive the motorhome some of the time, but he always makes an excuse why the time isn't right. Is this worth arguing about? ANSWER: In our opinion, the big deal is not how much you share the driving, but that you know how to drive the rig. Ask the many women who have had to take over when their husbands became disabled -- injured or perhaps even the victim of a heart attack. At such a time, your husband would be mighty thankful that you could get to a hospital without having to consult the RV's operator's manual. Point this out to him and maybe he'll share his left seat a bit more often. From the ABCs of RVing.

Camping with Pets
Keep pets restrained while traveling
Pets should be restrained while traveling in any moving vehicle. We may not follow this rule all of the time, but it is a good one. But never, ever allow a pet to travel in the front passenger seat. It's the most dangerous seat in the house. An inflating air bag can crush an animal or small child. Seat restraints and kennels help keep our pets safe.

World's largest catsup bottle
The World's Largest Catsup Bottle is located along Route 159 just south of downtown Collinsville, Ill. The 170-foot tower and bottle could hold 640,000 regular-sized bottles of catsup. The water tower was built in 1949 by the W.E. Caldwell Company, a catsup bottling plant. In 1995, due to the efforts of the Catsup Bottle Preservation Group, the landmark roadside attraction was saved from demolition and beautifully restored to its original appearance. In August of 2002 it was named to the National Register of Historic Places.

Fulltimer Tips
How to choose a hospital while on the road
When choosing a hospital, full-time RVers don't always have the benefit of as much "local knowledge" as those who live in one place. When an emergency arises, they probably won't have much choice about where they go. But there are plenty of times when they have time to select a hospital. So how do they choose one?

Trivia
A police van used to transport criminals is often called a Paddy Wagon. The term originated in the 18th century from Paddy, a nickname for an Irishman named Patrick, then later for Irishmen in general. "Paddy Wagon" came from either its use for transporting Irish wrongdoers to jail or the high percentage of Irish on municipal police forces.

Everything in
this newsletter is true to the best of our knowledge. But we
occasionally get something wrong. We're just human! So don't go spending
$10,000 on something we said was good simply because we said so, or
fixing something according to what we suggested (check with your own
technician first). Maybe we made a mistake. So be sure to check things
out. At RVbookstore.com we strive for excellence in all we do. Our
customers
receive super fast service. Our motto is "You need it so
we speed it," and no truer words were ever spoken!
