While there are no official stat-keepers for the situation, the evidence continues on the anecdotal end of the game. In Texas, the Dallas Courtesy Patrol, operated by the local sheriff's office, says the number of calls from drivers running out of fuel on the road has doubled in recent months. The mid-Atlantic region of the auto club, AAA, says they too, have seen an large upswing in member-motorists calling for help -- 15 percent on a year-over-year basis. Running on empty may be a new essential in this era of high-priced gas, it can be costly. From an individual basis, running on fumes is said to overtax expensive automotive fuel pumps, leading to a costly replacement. On a larger--and more worrisome scale -- running out of fuel in the middle of the freeway can lead to nasty, and potentially fatal, accidents. Watch out for those guys running the last gas gasp.
