The kind of question I am often asked about my fulltiming solo is "Aren't you ever afraid?" My answer: "You betcha - the full on shaking-in-my-boots kind of afraid!" But I've learned there are different kinds of fear. Some come up for our protection to keep us from jumping off a cliff, for example. And some are meant to be pushed past, so that we DO jump off that cliff. Come on now, I'm not advocating really jumping off any cliffs - it's just a visual aid, OK? Sometimes when I feel fear about something I really want to do, I recite a line from one of my favorite books: A Tree Full of Angels: Seeing the Holy in the Ordinary. "When we walk to the edge of all the light we have and take that step into the darkness of the unknown, we must believe that one of two things will happen...there will be something solid for us to stand on, or we will be taught to fly." And then for good measure, I chant a quote from Brendan Francis: "Many of our fears are tissue paper-thin, and a single courageous step would carry us clear through them."
So do I take measures to limit putting myself in physical danger? Of course. I may be crazy but I'm not stupid. But when it comes to following my dreams of travel, I walk right to the edge of the cliff and look out onto all the possibilities that exist out there to help my dreams come true. And then things start happening in ways I could never have foreseen before taking that first little step. I suggest putting a reasonable limit on your fears. Don't just accept that because something stirs a little fear in you that you shouldn't do it. Fly.
