Time Management

In a former life (before I became a full-time RVer), I was an educational sales trainer. One of the many subjects we discussed in our training sessions was making a plan and sticking to it. The same kind of planning should be done in the RV lifestyle.

We don't drive aimlessly in a direction we think we want to go and stop only when we’re exhausted. We have a plan. If we want to be in a certain place at a certain time, we calculate the drive time and allow for making detours to see points of interest along the way. If we make reservations at a campground, we arrive before dark so we can check out the site before we connect cables and hoses, roll out the awning and carpet, hang the Japanese lanterns, set up the barbecue, and put out the lawn chairs, tables, umbrellas, flamingoes, pinwheels and lawn gnomes.

If we plan to camp on a holiday weekend, we make our reservations well in advance so we can choose a favorite site or sites, perhaps camping together with friends or relatives in the area. We wouldn't dream of dropping in without a reservation. Part of the fun is the anticipation.

The best part about planning and managing your time is that it doesn't take long to create a lifestyle that has the best aspects of RVing: seeing our beautiful country, Canada and Mexico; driving on a variety of roads and highways; meeting people with diverse backgrounds everywhere you go. You can do as much or as little as you want. You can, as my mentor said, "Work with intensity to design a life. When you loaf, loaf up a storm."

The reason I'm reminding everyone to manage their time wisely is because I found out that at noon yesterday, the year was exactly half over. Where did the time go? I can look back at my Day-Timer and Outlook Calendar and remember what I did. How about you?

Plan to create some memorable experiences and then "loaf up a storm." You’ll be very glad you did.
