Editor's corner By Chuck Woodbury Follow RVtravel.com on Twitter
Dear reader,
I have always loved roadtrips. During my college years, I traveled cross country by car with buddies. We stayed in cheap motels, ate at cheap coffee shops and drank cheap beer.
In those years, I began to dream of traveling the USA with a motorhome and to somehow earn a living doing it. Books like John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley and Blue Highways fueled my desire. In the mid '80s, I finally acquired a motorhome (small and prone to breaking down) and hit the road. In the 25 years since, I have spent a total of about five years on the road, most in the '90s as the editor of my "on-the-road" newspaper Out West.
Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure Because of my love of roadtrips I was excited to come across the new book "Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure." It tells of Harry and wife Bess' 2,500-mile roadtrip from Missouri to Washington, DC and back only months after Harry had left the Presidency.
On the trip, they had no Secret Service protection. It was just Harry and the former First Lady traveling like ordinary folks. Harry would walk into a motel office to get a room just like anyone else, and the couple would visit diners for meals. Imagine how surprised the workers and customers must have been at these places to see the man and woman who had just recently left the White House!
Harry got pulled over for speeding by a Pennsylvania State Trooper named Manley Stampler. When the officer reached the driver's window, he immediately recognized the former President. "What am I going to do now?" he thought (we'll never know: the author didn't say).
At a coffee shop, a man approached Harry and told him about his sick 92 year-old mother, who, he said, was a life-long Democrat. "Will you please come over to the house and cheer her up?" he asked. "Who could say no to that kind of an invitation?" explained Harry. He ended up spending 30 minutes with the woman, talking like old friends.
I loved this book, in part because the Truman's roadtrip as ordinary citizens seems so improbable in today's times. Imagine George and Laura Bush heading off alone in their car, stopping at Denny's and checking into Motel 6's.
We have a dozen copies of the book at RVbookstore.com at a 25% discount if you would like to read it (we'll order more if we run out).

Bridge the gap between cab and truck camper A lot of pickups have the old slide-openable window in the rear of the cab, and plenty of truck campers have an openable window just behind the cab. What advantage can you take of this close relationship, and what are the pitfalls? While not advocating the idea, some folks do actually "ride" passengers in the camper. Having a way to communicate between camper and cab, and possibly pass snacks forward, could be a plus. Read more.

RV's water heater seems to be leaking. What to do?
Dear Gary, My RV's water heater seems to be leaking although I cannot actually see it happening. A towel placed close by the heater gets wet. All the water lines seem okay. Can the water heater tank be soldered? Is there any kind of cement to seal the leak once I remove the tank? The water heater is only two years old. --Thomas Honeywell

RV Boondocking Tips
In a squeeze for fresh water? By Russ and Tina De Maris
On a recent boondocking adventure, we were without our usual portable fresh water tank and ran low on water. To get more into our rig, we filled up a bunch of gallon plastic jugs. Back at the rig, we took a short length of water hose, fitted out with a "female" hose fitting. Sticking the "raw" end of the hose into our RV's water inlet port, we then stuck the hose fitting over the mouth of a water jug. We then inverted the water jug, and nearly all the water drained into the RV with very little spillage. After a couple of trips to the nearest faucet, we were "back in business," for another few days of boondocking without having to move the RV -- and much faster than using a funnel!

Tech Tips with Mark Polk
Do your homework when buying RV dinghy Before you make the decision to tow a vehicle with all four wheels down you need to do your homework. There are some manufacturer approved vehicles that can be towed without any modifications to the drive-train or transmission, but there are a lot more that will require some type of modification to tow it with all four wheels on the ground. There are many factors involved such as automatic transmissions, two-wheel drive vehicles, four-wheel drive vehicles, the type of transfer case and more.
Most vehicles with an automatic transmission cannot be towed with all four wheels down unless it is a four-wheel drive, and even then it requires a transfer case that can be shifted into neutral. Front wheel drive vehicles with manual transmissions and most four-wheel drive vehicles with a manual transfer case are among the best choices for towing with all four wheels down. Even if you have a vehicle that can be towed with all four wheels down, it's quite possible that it will have towing speed and/or mileage restrictions.

The good ol' days. . .
Amphicar was a neat idea that didn't catch on Sometimes good ideas don't work out. This one would have been terrific for RVers who like to tow both a boat and car behind their RVs but can't because of laws and also because it would be a towing nightmare. This cool boat-car was built in Germany in 1964. The Amphicar could go 70 mph on land and seven mph on water. A model with a larger Spitfire engine could go 80 on land and 12 on water. A total of 3,878 cars were built between 1961 and 1968. Back in those days the car would have cost between $2,800 and $3,300, which was a lot of hay in that day.

How long does it take to swap a motorhome engine? I have a really strong possibility of a job in Texas. At the same time, my class C's engine is beginning to show its age. Replacing the engine actually looks like a reasonable economic solution. The problem is timing. Anybody know how long it takes to replace an engine in a 76 Dodge-based class C?
Tires keep blowing on his Keystone toy hauler I have a year-old 40-foot Fuzion. Left Ohio for Key West...blew three tires. Weighed it with two Harleys...14,000 pounds on the three axles. Axles are 5,200 pounds 6 lug with 15-inch D-rated tires....2,500 pounds each. Talked to Keystone: no real help. Just came back from another trip to the Keys....three more blown tires and 13,000 pounds on the axles. I had tire monitors on all my tires. Keystone again said nothing to help even though they have bigger axles and 16" wheels on their 2009 models. Everywhere I go, people come over to me with their Keystone RVs and ask me about my tires. They all are having tire problems. I gave up and ordered three 7,000 axles with eight lugs and 16" wheels with G-rated Goodyears. Tires are in but not the axles yet. Anyone else having this problem or have already changed their tires?
Frustrated that RV dream is not happening I am so frustrated. I wish someone would take the time to post how they made it happen: travel in the RV, where and how they got together their financial picture, and just went. My hubbie is retired and we have a small class C. How do you get it all together so that you can just take off and go and not worry? With today's economy, we have had losses. Save up the money and something steals it. Grandkids or kids get sick and you put off the trip. I am about ready to sell the RV and forget it. I want to travel for a while and settle back down when my health insists I give it up and not until. There has got to be a way to get going, save money on expenses, and come back when you want to. Is everybody out there rich or something? I ought to be able to do this on $2500 a month. Leave your comment.
Motorized steps not working properly I have motorized double steps for my Fleetwood. When I open the door, naturally they come out. Lately they only work when the motor is running. I don't know if it is the sensor or something else. The RV is a 1992 and I think the steps are the same age. By the way where is the sensor located? Help!

Tourist Attraction Spotlight

Town welcome signs offer peek at their claims to fame Anyone who has spent much time on the back roads of America has most likely enjoyed the "welcome to town" messages on billboards at the city limits of small communities. In the 1990s, RVtravel.com editor Chuck Woodbury spent several months each year traveling the back roads of the American West in a motorhome, writing and publishing his quarterly newspaper Out West. Over that decade he snapped photos of many such signs. Here is a short video essay he put together.
