Dear reader,
U.S. highway 95 from Las Vegas to near Reno, is a depressing yet invigorating drive. It's the most direct route from Las Vegas to Reno through mile after mile of barren desert. Take away the sagebrush and you have Mars. Along the way there are small, dying towns -- Beatty, Goldfield, Tonopah and Hawthorne are the biggest. I have driven this lonely road at least a dozen times, each time the human struggle to survive seems more precarious.
I left Las Vegas two days ago headed north and stopped a couple of hours later in Beatty, where full-hookups at the Death Valley Hotel and RV park cost $15. The El Capitan Casino, the town landmark for decades, is gone. Two small casinos at each end of town snag a few customers. The guy who sells ammunition cans by the road who I wrote about two years ago is still there. But Beatty looks sick.
Up the road, Goldfield looks worse than ever. In its gold-rush heyday, the population was 20,000 with its showpiece Goldfield Hotel. Then there was a fire and the town was gone. Today, a few hundred people live there. The RV park advertises spaces at $8 and up. The town's only motel is closed and crumbling.
Tonopah is the metropolis -- about 2,500 people. There's a grocery store -- a big deal -- and a McDonald's. I stopped for a milkshake, but they were out. Tonopah has a hospital and a high school -- home of the fighting Muckers.
MUCH OF THE TOWN is boarded up with aged timber from earlier casualties. Motels, one after another, are closed. The Mispah Hotel Casino, once a lively, elegant stop between Vegas and Reno, is shut up tight and for sale. Gas stations are closed. The town looks spooky.
In Hawthorne, the El Capitan Hotel is still in business along with its motel. There's still free overnight RV parking out back. While the town looks far from prosperous, it's not as bad as its neighbors. Driving in and out of Hawthorne, giant bunkers are spread as far as the eye can see. Ammo is stored there for the Army, and a small military base protects and maintains it.
In between towns, you drive long stretches of lonely highway where you can see ten miles or 15 miles ahead. Every so often you pass by two or three mobile homes corralled together with a few cars out front: brothels. One advertises "pull through parking for truckers." Barren mountains are all around. Nevada is the most mountainous state, did you know that?
It's easy to get hypnotized by U.S. 95. My mind raced as I sped along. At one point I wrote stories in my head for 150 miles, one after another -- my right brain unleashed. If only I could record them, I thought, I would have a book. After awhile my mind was racing so fast I was about to pop. I pulled over for a break at a shady rest area in tiny Luning.
THE LUNING BAR, where I stopped 20 years ago with a crew from ABC News, is crumbling. A state patrolman waited patiently out front, ready to pounce on speeders. The speed limit drops from 70 to 25 in a half mile. He snagged two victims while I was there -- easy pickins.'
I'm now in Fallon, about 60 miles from Reno. It calls itself the "Oasis of Nevada." It's green and looks healthy. I passed a Starbucks a couple of miles before reaching the RV park -- the first one in nearly 400 miles.
Oddly, while driving U.S. 95 can be depressing, it is also utterly fascinating. Photographers could spend weeks recording both the barren landscape and the challenged, dying civilization. A cultural anthropologist should come, stay, and document what is happening here.
This stretch of U.S. 95 is almost a "ghost road." If you drive it, drop a few dollars and help the locals. Bring your camera. There are RV parks and freebie spots, too.

Paris? Nope. . . Vegas! No, that is not the Eiffel Tower, just a very tall fake one right along the Las Vegas strip, just down the street from the very fake Statue of Liberty. Spend a couple of days in Las Vegas and you can travel the world -- visit Greece one minute, walk a block or two and you're in Italy or France, or walk a little farther for a taste of Egypt in a big ol' hotel casino shaped like a pyramid!
If you don't want to leave the USA, spend a few hours at the New York New York Hotel/Casino, where for the fun of it you can ride a screaming roller coaster right over the skyline -- yeah, that's the Empire State Building you just flew passed.
AFTER DARK, watch a volcano explode at the Mirage Hotel/Casino, or cram yourself with hundreds of other visitors on the sidewalk to watch sexy girl pirates and handsome boy pirates duke it out in full-sized sailing ships at the hotel/casino Treasure Island. Only in America!

RVer does the ultimate RV "No, No" and the cops want him Colorado police are looking for an RVer with a white pickup truck camper who they believe dumped his sewer tank into a holding pond near a high school in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. If the guy did it, he's not only a candidate for the "Stupid RVer of the Year" award, he's also looking at some hefty fines: the cleanup is expected to cost $250,000 and take weeks. RV Boondocking Tips
Keep in touch with FRS radios By Russ and Tina De Maris Some of us remember the time when "walkie talkies" meant noisy static sounds coming out of a tinny speaker, and conversations limited to a 1/4 mile distance -- if there weren't any trees in the way. Those days have past, thankfully, with the innovation of Family Radio Service (FRS) transceivers. These neat little devices are relatively static-free, and can carry conversations up to several miles. RVers have been making great use of these "keepers." But beware! Using a "privacy code" does not prevent anyone from listening to your conversation -- it only prevents you from hearing others not using your programmed code. Don't talk about anything confidential on an FRS radio, and be sure to caution young ones to do the same. There are FRS units that promise "scrambling" of transmissions, in essence, rendering them into gibberish for idle listeners.

How to keep your RV cool in the summer heat Summer is here and that not only means prime travel season is upon us, and so is the heat. If you ever walked inside an RV sitting in the direct sunlight on a hot summer day, you know what I mean. Fortunately there are some simple things we can do to make our summer RV camping trips more pleasurable. I offered this advice last spring, but here it is again in case you missed it then. Truck bed damaged by fifth wheel We are on our first long trip in our new 5th wheel. Yesterday when I was unhooking, I noticed a gouge to the inside of my truck bed. Further examination determined it was caused by a sharp turn and the trailer had swung around enough to cause the gouge about 8" long and 1/32" to 1/16" in depth. The truck was not jackknifed, just some tight turns in parking lots and at gas stations. The hitch was installed new by the same dealer where I purchased the 5th wheel. The hitch rocks back and forth and from side to side. To me it seems when the hitch was installed, they should have made allowances for this. Was this a driver error or a dealer error?
Concerned about traveling with fridge running on propane After buying my new Jayco Featherlight, I realized the fridge was a two-way (not that big a deal), but I will now have to keep the propane on while traveling down the road which is really illegal, or is it? It makes me feel really uncomfy. How many of you do this? I do realize you have to turn it OFF before fueling at any gas station.
Non-adjustable hot water heaters I recently purchased a new hot water heater for my 31-foot Class C. After it was installed I noticed that the water temperature cannot be adjusted. It appears to be fixed -- hot, very hot. I wouldn't have a problem with that except we have small grandchildren who could be easily burned. Can anyone share a solution that will allow me to modify (if necessary) the temperature limits?
Slideout seal damaged, a nightmare getting it fixed We own a 2008 Holiday Rambler Presidential Suite. Had to take it to the factory last summer for frame work under warranty. They had to remove the bedroom slideout room to repair unit. Upon installing back into the RV, they damaged the seal and every time it rains, it leaks onto the carpet. This has turned into a nightmare. The manufacturer (Monaco) did the Chapter 11 thing in the meantime so no help from dealer (they can't get parts). Now they have been bought by Navistar and they WILL NOT honor any warranty on Monaco-built coaches of any kind. I'd be willing to buy a new seal for my bedroom but the factory doesn't have it and can't seem to match up my old seal. Talk about the feeling of being left out on a limb. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do?
Is washer/dryer THAT important for full-timers? How important is a washer/dryer to you full-timers in your 5th wheel/Class A? Is it just a matter of convenience or would you rather have the space for something else? Or if you have a W/D, would you rather not have them? What about the importance of a generator for full-timers? Your comments please.
Is a Montana LLC legal? We will be retiring next year and are making preparations to go fulltiming! Have been "lurking" on every website possible in order to gain as much knowledge as possible. We have come across the "Montana LLC" concept. If we spend around $200,000 on a MH, our taxes (here in Texas) would be about $16,000! Ouch! The LLC costs approximately $1,300 which seems "too good to be true." Is it legal? Could we get into IRS trouble? What pitfalls could we face? Please advise! Also, would like to get your input regarding our MH choices.
What's a good vacuum for RV? I need to buy a vacuum for my travel trailer. Can someone give advice on a good brand?
