This stylish trailer, designed to be both low cost and flexible, was the brainchild of NDA aces Bryan Thompson and Steve Moneypenny, who envisioned a travel vehicle that was a springboard for outdoor adventures rather than a living room on wheels. The BaseCamp pays homage to Airstream’s past, taking styling and content cues from the original “Torpedo” concept developed by company founder Wally Byam in the 1930’s. The attached tent extension, engineered by outdoor products giant Kelty, provides a lightweight way to double the available living space. Ultra-light: most conventional vehicles, with a 2,000 lb gross weight, when fully loaded, can tow Airstream’s BaseCamp.Aggressive styling: 20” wheels, wrap-around windows, low profile stance, and Airstream’s trademark aluminum skin give BaseCamp a look like nothing else on the street. Once at its campsite, the unit doubles in size thanks to a Kelty tent which folds out the back. Just the basics: keeping the weight and price tag down, the BaseCamp is minimally outfitted. On the market in October, 2005, MSRP is expected to be under $20,000.
