BC town backs off proposal to ban overnight stays in parking lots

PRINCE GEORGE, BC. (May 9, 2006) -- In its meeting Monday night, the Prince George City Council backed off from its recent proposal to ban overnight RV stays in public parking lots. The city had voted two weeks ago to amend its bylaws to disallow such stays. But in a novel twist, the RVers who violated the rule would not have been ticketed but instead the owners of the property.

So for now, free overnight stays in public parking lots are allowed in the town of 50,000 along the most popular route to and from Alaska. The City Council will take up the topic again and is expected to rule that stays of between 12 and 24 hours are okay.

After the council's decision to ban the overnight stays was announced two weeks ago, the mayor and council members were flooded with angry emails from RVers from throughout Canada and the USA, most of whom said they would no longer visit the town, or at the very least spend no money there. Many of the letters were from RVtravel.com readers who responded to an article on its website.
