The 2006 edition of the Wal-Mart Locator directory has been published by Jan and Bob Wiley, the sixth edition of the best-selling RV book.

Wal-Mart isn't a campground, but you might think otherwise some evenings when the corner of a store's parking lot may be occupied by a few or even a few dozen RVers who are "camped" for the night.

Most Wal-Mart stores permit a free overnight stay in a self-contained RV, and that's where the Wal-Mart Directory comes in handy. The 2006 edition, published in March, provides addresses and specific driving directions to more than 3,700 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores in 49 states. It also points out stores that sell gasoline and diesel fuel, which is useful information because Wal-Mart's prices are generally less than surrounding stations.

Most RVers stay at a Wal-Mart when they need a place to get a night's rest and a campground isn't handy. Of course, many never stay at all, but like to stop to replenish supplies. But the pricetag of an overnight stay in a store’s parking lot is definitely right: free. So many RVers routinely plan their travels to include an overnight stop at Wal-Mart when they aren't up for a full-blown RV park experience. The $25 to $35 (or more!) they save on a campsite can come in handy the next day at the gas pump.

The 2006 Wal-Mart Locator includes state maps which provide a general idea of store locations. From there, RVers can pinpont specific stores with information about which exit to take off a highway or Interstate, and where to go after that. The directory also includes store Zip Codes for use in aiming TV satellite dishes.

Authors Bob and Jan Wiley are veteran RVers who found it challenging to find Wal-Marts as they traveled. So they decided to create an easy-to-use directory that would make the task easy. The 2006 directory is the sixth edition they've published and the first since 2004. The cover price is $24.95, but the book is almost impossible to find in general bookstores. Its biggest national retailer is RVbookstore.com, where it sells for $19.95.
