Most of the crimes reported were committed at locked storage facilities, where the RVs were most easily broken into by thieves or mischief makers. Most of the vandalism was minor, but there were serious crimes as well. Here are some of the responses we received from readers. Click here to see all the responses and the up-to-date survey results. Some of the responses: While parked in a locked fenced storage area, motorhome was broken in to, VCR and night vision camera stolen. On another occasion gas tank was drilled into and all gas emptied (about 50 gallons). We were staying in Boulder, Mont., and my propane tanks and cover was stolen. Nothing was done to the camper. Now I have a chain around the tanks. Like closing the barn door after the horse has left. Our two batteries were taken our of our 1997 5th wheel, plus all the contents of the storage compartment next to the batteries. Our 5th wheel was in a locked facility, but the thieves used a key to get into the two compartments. A few years back, I had just returned from a trip in the RV and placed it in my space, at a secured storage facility. I had removed a few of the expensive items, and planned to return the next day to remove other items. When I returned, I found that it had been broken into, vandalized inside -- including tearing off a cabinet door and found the mattress to the bed in the "hallway." They had used every thing in the motorhome, including eating any food left in refrigerator and cupboards. It was obvious that they had used it as a home base while they used tools from my tool box to break through a door of a brand new motorhome next to mine and most of the other RVs. Fortunately, my homeowners insurance replaced all of the items taken, and stated that they had several other RVs (at the same location) that they carried the insurance on which had received damage and losses. We had parked our Class C motorhome at "Park and Swap" along Hwy. 95 in Quartzsite, Ariz., last year in an attempt to sell it. Someone "keyed" both doors down to the metal through both paint and stripes. A few years ago the door on our trailer was damaged severely and the microwave taken. Not long ago the back window of our motorhome was broken and a few small things taken. Each of these RVs was in a locked RV storage surrounded by a chain link fence. We now have a smaller motorhome and keep it at home with a security light. Had the back up camera stolen from our old Bounder. It was an aftermarket item installed by the previous owner. They climbed on our fence to remove it, never heard a thing. Our trailer was broken into by prying open the door. It was in a fenced storage yard and they cut the chain link fence. They ate a lot of my stored food, took some loose change and left their flashlight. Door had to be replaced. They were later caught, were out on parole. Our Fleetwood Discovery was splashed with paint stripper all along one side. Paint stripper destroys gel-coat and fiberglass! Insurance company paid the complete restoration. Over $9,000 in damage!
