LAUGHLIN,
Nev., Jan. 29 -- Since its humble beginnings as a gambling town along
the Colorado River, Laughlin casinos have attracted much of their
business from RVers. Don Laughlin built the first major casino in
Laughlin in the 1970s, and opened his big parking lot to RVers,
inviting them to stay for free as long as they wanted. As other casinos
sprung up, they also invited RVers to spend a night (or more) in their
parking lots. A decade later, thousands of RVs could be found in the
winter season parked at most of the casinos.
Through the years,
many of the casinos have closed their parking lots to RVers, but not
all. The result: each winter snowbird season, hundreds if not thousands
of winter visitors dry camp in casino parking lots every night.
But
now, Clark County has ordered casino owners who permit free overnight
RV stays in their parking lots or overflow lots to cease allowing the
practice or be in violation of county health codes. The Ramada Express,
Harrah's Laughlin and the River Palms Resort are affected by the county
notice.
Although the "no pavement parking law" has been on the
books since the ‘70s, it was not until this month that Clark County
chose to enforce them in Laughlin. To comply with the laws, the casinos
must "cease and desist" allowing RVers to stay in their vehicles
overnight. If they want RVers to stay, they must build sanitation
facilities and camping spaces with full hook-ups.
Already,
most of the boondocking RVers have been told to move. Many headed a few
miles south to the Avi Resort Casino, which is on tribal lands. But the
spaces there quickly filled up and most RVers were turned away.
