RV scam artist strikes again
By Chuck Woodbury

Here is yet another example of an RV scam artist at work. The ploy works in like this: A private party with an RV for sale online receives an email from a distant buyer -- an agent for a buyer, actually -- who agrees to purchase the vehicle. Typically, he will send a cashier’s check that is, for one reason or another, too large, and then request the seller send a smaller cashier’s check back to offset the overpayment.

Somebody wants your money and he'll cheat you to get it!
One major problem: the original buyers cashier's check bounces higher than Flubber. If the seller goes along with the deal and sends a real cashier's check or money order as instructed, he's out mucho dinero.

An RV Travel reader sent along this email that he received after making what he thought was a counter-offer on the RV he was selling. He was smart enough to recognize the scam when he received this letter, saving him what would have been a loss of more than $10,000.

The letter:

Hello,
I am pleased to inform you that based on the state of the vehicle, my client has finally accepted your price and he can't wait to see the vehicle parked in his house. However, my client made out a certified cashiers check of $71,500 before he travelled to London on a business trip for a previous vehicle and its shipment charges, etc., but it was unfortunately sold. The amount on the check he deposited for the vehicle is bigger than what should be paid to you now, so the check is now meant for the total expenses which includes the purchase of your vehicle, the pick up of the vehicle from its present location and the shipping charges/other necessary shipping arrangements.

However, he has instructed us to carry on with this transaction; but due to company policy this check has to be made out in this amount to you because company policy only allows a refund payment on one cashier check.

So you're required to deduct the cost of your vehicle ($61,000) and send the balance of $10,500 to my client via Western Union money transfer or money gram tranfer to enable him offset shipping charges/arrangements. After payment has reached you and balance sent back to him, our agent will come for the pick up on an open inspection and then drive to a pre paid shipper for shipment, and also conclude other necessary shipping arrangement so you dont have to bother yourself about the pick up and shipping arrangements, while title papers and other necessary documets will be sent by you via Express courier to my customer. Please Confirm this and provide FULL NAME, ADDRESS and PHONE NUMBER for check payment to be delivered to you soon.

Thanks for your time and co-operation.
