Town tells new Wal-Mart. "You must allow RVers to stay!"

(MARCH 8, 2006) -- Here's a switch. The Laurel (Montana) City/County Planning Board voted last week to conditionally approve a request by Wal-Mart to build a Supercenter on a 20-acre lot in the new Laurel Business Park Subdivision.

Among the special requests by the city is that the store incorporate in its building and outparcel construction design, "the bare pine log design, similar to that used at Laurel Ford and Ace Hardware."

"It's great if they will do that, but we can't enforce that. We don't have any design standards or architectural review authority,"  said Perry Asher, assistant to the Mayor.

But the shocker among the city's recommendations is this request: "Wal-Mart allow RV parking on the parking lot but without any improvements for such parking." Another request is that Wal-Mart make landscape improvements and provide picnic tables at the northwest corner of the proposed detention pond.

The "Welcome RVers" part of the city's request is especially interesting because just a short drive northeast along I-90, Billings, pop. 98,000, is being boycotted by many RVers after the community banned any overnight parking in any city parking lot, which includes the local Wal-Mart. Billings is reconsidering changing its policy to once again allow overnight stays because it fears being perceived as "RV-unfriendly."

Laurel, population 6,250, is nine miles southwest of Billings along I-90.
