Dear reader,
This issue is briefer than normal, and it will be through the summer. I'm taking a break to do some traveling including several RV trips -- one beginning in two weeks with my 17 year-old daughter Emily. In September, I'll fly to Germany for a few weeks (no RV, but I will check out the scene there, for sure). It generally takes me about two long days to write each issue of this newsletter, so I'm hoping to save some time to enjoy the three R's -- Rest, Relaxation and RVing.

I returned Monday from five days in New York for my cousin's wedding in Cooperstown, which is "baseball city." Along the main street -- every other shop sells baseball related material. The picturesque town on Lake Otsego, of course, is home to the Baseball Hall of Fame. For anyone who lives and breathes baseball, a visit must be close to Heaven on Earth.

Greedy Bass
I snapped this photo last Sunday at Lake Otsego. The bass had washed up on shore, dead after trying to swallow a sunfish whole (geez. . . must have been a terrible death!). I have never seen anything like this before, and thought you might enjoy the photo. To see a larger one and read my short description of the event, visit my blog.

That wraps it up for me for now. I'm headed to a (Scottish) Highlands Games near Bellingham, Wash., for the weekend. If you'll be there, look for me: I'll be in the View motorhome!

What you need to know about RV fresh water systems. Part 2
Last time we talked about using "city water" in a campground or RV park. When you're away from city water, you've suddenly become your own water utility company. How can you make sure your water is pure and safe? Here is part two of our discussion.

Incredibly stupid RV trick with fire
In this episode of "People are Stupid and and Some People are Really, Really Stupid" (as in this case), a fellow finds a wasp nest in his travel trailer. It's attached right where the wall meets the ceiling -- a highly flammable ceiling, we should say. So what does he decide to do to get rid of the nest? Yup, burn it! See what happens in this two-minute video.

The new program, known as Thor Credit, will be available in eight states (AL, FL, GA, MD, NC, SC, TN, VA). The company said it will expand it beyond those areas in the future. Monaco sale complete
Navistar International Corp said Thursday it had completed its purchase of certain assets of Monaco Coach Corp, the RV maker that filed for bankruptcy protection in March. Navistar said it paid about $47 million for the assets, which include four Monaco facilities in Oregon and Indiana. Jack Allen, president of Navistar's North American truck group, said Navistar's entry into the RV business fit with the company's strategy of expanding its diesel engine and chassis businesses. Navistar said production would resume at some of the facilities "in the coming months" but at a "pace commensurate with demand." The new company is not liable for any product sold by Monaco before the purchase by Navistar, however customer service representatives will help current owners find service and support for their RVs.

RV Boondocking Tips

Filling up with water without moving your RV
By Russ and Tina De Maris
Getting water to your rig without having to move the RV is a blessing if you stay in one place for a while. Many boondockers use a water barrel -- a food grade drum they carry on their truck bed. Getting the water out of it and into the RV is a bit of a trick. Some place their barrels in custom cradles that hold them high enough to allow gravity to drain the water from the drum into the RV tank. Others set them on a bed-mounted tool box and use a siphon action. Using an auxiliary 12-volt pump can eliminate the "high flyer" methods. Immerse an inlet hose into the barrel -- possibly taping it to a metal pipe to keep it "stiff" enough to reach the bottom of the drum. An appropriately sized outlet hose fits into the RV water port. Getting electricity to your pump can be done in different ways. You may "tie in" to the battery charge line plug in the truck bed, which normally serves to charge the RV batteries when towing. Or run a 12-volt 'extension cord' to the cab and power off the cab's lighter socket.

Russ and Tina De Maris are the authors of RV Boondocking Basics.

Tech Tips with Mark Polk

Problem with refrigerator

Dear Mark,
My refrigerator is freezing up. It happened after we defrosted it last August. As of May 1, after turning it back on, it still freezes. Any advice?

Mark Says: Here is one possibility. Look inside the refrigerator compartment toward the back and you will see some fins. On one of those fins there will likely be a small piece of plastic. You can slide it up or down on the fin. That will control the temperature inside the refrigerator compartment. If it gets bumped or moved from its original position it can cause it to freeze in the refrigerator. I don't recall offhand which way to slide it to make it stop freezing. Get a small refrigerator thermometer and experiment with it to see where it needs to be adjusted. It will take some time in each position so be patient. You want the temperature in the refrigerator to be around 36 to 37 degrees. Food can begin to spoil at 40 degrees. Hopefully this will correct the problem.

Fresh water: What portable tank to use?
I've searched for the obvious answer but maybe this is too basic: is there anything wrong with using a blue tote to haul potable water so I don't have to hitch/move to a water supply? I can't seem to find a portable answer other than a grey/black drain tote. I'd like to have something about 20 gallons. What do you use, or are you always at a good supply spigot? The land I'm going to put my new-to-me 5er on doesn't have water to it yet, so I'd like to avoid hooking up to refill from a water source down the road.

Should I paint my faded brown RV?
My "new" RV exterior is all faded brown tones. Very boring and kinda ugly. I'd like to paint it a vibrant color a la "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." What kind of paint do I need? Primer? How would you go about it? Maybe a big "peace sign" on the side too. Think it will affect the resale value? Respond.

Low water pressure even with city hookup
We went out on the first trip in the travel trailer for a shakedown run, an R-Vision toy hauler. Only problem we had was low water flow at the faucets. We have plenty of pressure at the shower head, just not the sink. Even if we run from the fresh water tank or a city hookup, it stays the same. We even removed the regulator and nothing changed. We had sufficient flow from the hose, but it seems something is blocking the flow to the faucets. This is also our first RV, so is this normal or am I expecting it to be like my house? It takes one minute to fill a quart container.

Buy or sell your used motorhome, diesel pusher, fifth wheel, or travel trailer hassle free at PPL Motor Homes. PPL is the largest RV consignment dealer in the USA, selling over 18,880 consigned RVs since 1972. Visit the PPL website.

Why isn't my hot water hot enough?
We use propane to heat our water and for some reason, this season the hot water isn't very hot. It's warm enough to shower in without using any cold water to regulate the temp. I've had to heat water in the microwave to wash dishes. The heater seems to be functioning fine otherwise. I did try the reset button but that didn't help. Respond.

What to do with slides, jacks while RV is stored
We have a 2005 Safari Gazelle, just traded up from gas to diesel, and have some concerns. Our manual says you're not supposed to store the RV with the slides open and the jacks down, so what is the difference if you are staying at a campground over the winter months? You are there for a long period but most likely will have the jacks down and slides out. Will this hurt them? We do have the jacks down at this time because it leans to one side or the other without them. The air suspension loses air when it is parked for a time without the jacks down. Is this normal? Also our engine is a 400 Cat. Have been told that they need to run to stay in good working order. Again if you are staying for several months in one campground, will the engine be OK? We have a lot to learn between gas and diesel coaches. Respond.

Concerns about mildew on RV awning
About two weeks ago (ugh, I can't believe I'm saying this) I retracted my bus' awning while it was wet. You already guessed that today as I deployed the 10X10 awning, it was covered in mildew. I used some Simple Green to spot treat, and gave it a nice scrubbing with a pole brush, followed with a nice rinse, towel dried and allowed to really dry out in the sun. But I'm worried that these spots will now be more prone to becoming infected with the green invader. Is there something I can do to keep the mildew from returning or to seal the vinyl so it doesn't do this again?

Random RV Thought
This is a bad situation: You pull into a campground beneath a beautiful pine tree. You dine, enjoy a campfire, then go to sleep. At dawn, a loud "boom" explodes on your rooftop waking you from your peaceful slumber. Then there's a second, and a third! Terrorist explosives on the roof? No, just a squirrel dining above on pine cones, dropping them when done. You step outside and see him 50 feet above you. You say "shoo squirrel," and he looks at you with authority and says, "No, the food is good and you can't do anything about it." And you realize that we humans do not always have the upper hand with nature, even small rodents.
