Watching the ferry come and go is a three-minute walk from our office and warehouse.
If you live in Washington's Puget Sound area, please stop by next Saturday, May 13 for our first-ever RVbookstore.com Warehouse Open House. We'll have munchies and refreshments, hourly door prizes, and lots of books and DVDs to browse, many at special low prices just for the occasion. We're in Edmonds, a short drive north of Seattle along I-5, just a two-minute walk from the beach, the ferry terminal, a wildlife sanctuary, an antique mall, off-leash dog beach, fishing pier, and several coffee houses and restaurants. There's plenty of free car and RV parking, too (if you want to come by Amtrak or commuter rail, the station is 100 yards from our office). We'll be open Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Our address is 170 West Dayton St., Suite 103, Edmonds, WA 98020. Get driving directions here. My staff and I look forward to meeting you and "talkin' RV!"

Boy, did we stir up debate in Prince George, British Columbia when we reported last week that the City Council had proposed to change its bylaws to prohibit overnight RV stays in public parking lots! Check out the comments by the readers of this newsletter after hearing the news. In the last week I was interviewed twice by the Prince George newspaper and interviewed by its CBC radio station. The result is that the City Council -- now alerted to the PR nightmare its plan has created -- will discuss the issue in its meeting tomorrow (Monday) evening. Our guess is that the council will back down and continue to allow RVers to stay in public parking lots. Prince George is along the most popular route from the U.S. to Alaska and is battling to keep tourists. The recent sinking of a BC ferry cut ferry traffic to the town by half, a significant blow to the economy.

Judging from reader comments, my new editor's "voice message" that accompanied last week's newsletter went over well, although we had some technical glitches at first that caused some of you problems. We've been experimenting with adding audio and video to stories on our websites, and already include a handful of audio and video book reviews at RVbookstore.com. We plan to keep finding uses for communicating with you in ways other than the written word. If you do not have Quicktime loaded in your computer, you'll need it to hear and see our messages. Get it free for Mac or Windows.

Our new RV Travel print edition
We're now two weeks away from publishing our first-ever RV Travel printed edition.

The ABCs of RVing
Roger Wilco, over and out. . .

When using two-way radios, if you talk at the same time with another person you cancel out each other, missing what was said. Try this: Say the driver's name first when you speak (transmit). With many people using these handsets in busy RV locations, it is possible to hear someone else and do exactly the opposite of what the copilot wanted. Say "Over" when you finish speaking and let go of the button. Repeating the driver's name and finishing with "Over" lets that person know who you are speaking to, when you are finished speaking, and that the other person can now talk (transmit). Plus, when you say "Over," you will look really cool to anyone watching. This tip is one of more than 500 in All the Stuff You Need to Know About RVing by Ronald Jones and Robert Lowe.

Letter to the editor

Dear Chuck,
Thank you for raising the issue of overnight RV parking here in Prince George B.C. I have talked to a number of RV owners from in and out of Prince George and they do not like our current bylaw and do not want a no overnight parking bylaw at all even with 12 of 24 hour time limits. I know where they are coming from since some travelers might spend a couple nights in town and prefer to park at the same business at night. This issue is coming back to our city council within a week and I hope the section of the bylaw that deals with enforcement of no overnight RV parking is eliminated all together. I would like your readers to know that many people including myself appreciate RVers traveling through our part of the province and hope that their stay in Prince George B.C. is a good one. They might only stay only one night or even a day or two. Regardless, we appreciate their business and friendly smiles when dealing with our local merchants.

Motorized RV sales down, trailer sales up
With gas prices climbing, some RV buyers are opting for travel trailers instead of gas-hungry motor coaches. What about you? If you're in the market for an RV, what
do you plan to buy, a towable or motorized RV? Answer here?

Motorhome in new movie "RV" not a Winnebago
Credits for the new Robin Williams movie "RV" don't mention what brand of motorhome was used, but it wasn't a Winnebago according to the Des Moines Register. The paper said that Winnebago was approached about having its product featured in the movie, but declined the offer. "The motor home is sometimes portrayed as breaking down and things like that," said Winnebago spokeswoman Sheila Davis. "We really didn't want our product to be portrayed negatively."

Oceanside, Calif., retirement community bans RVs on property
The 920-home retirement community of Peacock Hills has banned all vehicles from residents' property that will not fit into a garage. "I've lived here for almost 30 years and I have always had an RV parked on the side of my house," one resident said. "I've never had a complaint from anyone. If it was so bad, why didn't I get a complaint?" The homeowner's association didn't see it that way, and amended its covenants to prohibit storage of RVs and other large vehicles on homeowners' property.

RV Tech Tip by Mark Polk

Be careful driving downhill: that's when accidents happen
Eighty percent of all towing related accidents happen when you're traveling downhill. It takes approximately three times longer to stop than if you were on a flat surface and the greater your speed the greater the stopping distance required. Here are a few tips for towing on downgrades.

Downshift on downgrades to lessen the braking action required. Reduce your speed. Remember that trailer sway is more likely to occur when descending inclines. On steep or long downgrades reduce gears and avoid prolonged brake use on the tow vehicle. The brakes can easily overheat and begin to fade. Use the vehicle brakes in intervals.

If the trailer becomes unstable when descending an incline and the trailer starts to sway, reduce your speed, avoid using the vehicle brakes, and manually activate the trailer brakes to regain control.

Do not travel above the posted speed limit on downgrades. Leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you.
