Editor's Corner By Chuck Woodbury
Gaylord Maxwell, RV author,
former RV dealer and founder of the Life On Wheels conferences, likes
to illustrate an idea at his lectures to RVers by using a tape measure.
Gaylord, in his late 70s, pulls out the tape and begins to extend it
ever so slowly, telling the audience to imagine that each inch
represents a year of his life. When he has stopped, he holds out the
extended tape -- about six and a half feet long. "This is how long I
have lived," he says. And then he explains that according to
statistics, he has about seven years to go.
And then he extends
the tape another seven inches. "This is how much time I have left," he
explains as the audience stares at the "before" and "after" of the
extended tape -- one segment very long, the other short.
It's a
startling reminder of how little time may remain in the lives of some
of the people in the audience, many of whom are pondering taking up
RVing or perhaps fulltime RVing. Should they do it or not? Until they
decide, they live in limbo.
As Gaylord points out, our time is "measured." His message is simple: "Live your dream now. Don't wait."
The
message is appropriate not only in terms of RVing, but in every aspect
of our lives. I like what Steve Jobs told the 2005 graduating class of
Standford University:
"Your time is limited, so don't waste it
living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma -- which is
living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise
of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important,
have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow
already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is
secondary."

Council Bluffs, Iowa man is the latest target of a RV buying scam that
could have cost him a lot of grief and money. It began when he received
an offer from an oversees broker in response to an ad the Iowa man was
running for his motorcoach on the Internet. The broker enclosed a
$50,000 cashier's check as down payment on behalf of a buyer. "I had a
real feeling it was bogus," Ted Brunow told the local media. His bank
agreed: the check was worthless. But Brunow went ahead and told the
broker that he had deposited the check, and waited for his next move.
Shortly thereafter, the "broker" wrote back, saying the buyer had been
suddenly hospitalized and needed to postpone the purchase. He then
advised Brunow to wire him $8,000 of the money and keep the remaining
$42,000 as a deposit, which of course, would have left Brunow with a
worthless cashier's check and $8,000 poorer. Learn more about how to avoid becoming a victim of such a scheme here.Articles from the RV family of websites
Going fulltime? How do you get rid of all your "stuff?" A
full time RVer must eliminate possessions that have taken a lifetime to
accumulate -- furniture, household goods, souvenirs, photographs,
paperwork, mementos from your youth and a whole lot more. So how do you
do it? Here's how...
Practice takes the stress out of RV driving Prospective
or first time RV owners may be intimidated by the thought of driving

sedan. Some new skills are required, but learning them does not
have to be a stressful experience. Learn more here.

The ABCs of RVing Make your water last When
boondocking (camping without utility hookups), use a pan to catch the
initial water you must run while waiting for the hot water to come
through the faucet. Use this for doing the dishes later. Heat it on the
stove or in the microwave.
Bad month for RVers in Florida It's been one disaster after another for RVers down in the Sunshine State. Item:
Man rescued from sinking RV in Pembroke Park lake. The victim was
rescued with his nose barely above water inside his RV as it sank in 60
feet of water. Item: Man and woman at Wakiwa Falls Resort in Lake County were critically injured when their RV exploded. Investigation continues. Item:
Accidental fire destroyed two motorhomes in Charlotte Harbor RV Park.
Owner says: "I am grateful it was only two units. The whole park could
have went up." No common thread is apparent in this run of misfortune,
but carelessness no doubt played a part in each case.

A new RVer requests advice about solar equipment "Since
most of our trips will be in places without hookups, I need a source
for a decent solar charging setup. For now I will be using two deep
cycle batteries but will eventally upgrade to 6V golf cart batteries. A
generator is not really an option for us." Read what others had to offer.
Boondocking Tip Sewer mover?
Getting sewage out of your rig's holding tanks doesn't necessarily mean
moving the rig to the dump station. Portable waste storage tanks or
"blue boys," can tote that "old black water" to the dump station in jig
time. If your rig is parked close "just out of range" of a suitable
sewage receiver, you can use a macerator pump to grind and pump sewage
greater distances through a garden hose or small diameter plastic pipe.
Some macerators operate on 12 volt power, others on water pressure
alone. Some boondockers combine macerator pumps and portable waste
tanks to move their sewage while saving their backs from heavy tank
lifting. Flag Pole Buddy A new innovative design in a ladder mounted flag bracket. Includes a 3x5 American flag. The new bracket allows you to raise and lower your flag in seconds. Includes a 12 foot aluminum pole that folds down to 6 feet & withstands the harshest desert winds. Check it out at RVToyOutlet.com
