By Chuck Woodbury

It's a lousy time in the RV industry. Hardly a week passes that we don't announce the demise of yet another RV manufacturer. Despite this rash of closings and bankruptcies, I, for one, believe the RV industry will do just fine again. . . someday. But, for now, some manufacturers are destined to go belly up -- those that don't quickly adapt to a changing market. I wrote last week about Country Coach's new luxury Veranda motorhome that features a balcony -- in my opinion, one of the most useless RV amenities to debut in a long time, and a perfect illustration of a company out of touch with today's RV market. Who needs a balcony? Maybe people with a fear of dirt, which most of you know is called Rupophobia.

At a time when the price of gas and diesel is hovering around $4 a gallon and probably won't drop below $3 ever again, some manufacturers keep cranking out big honkin' rigs, which, nobody wants these days. Well, yes, some fulltimers do want them -- the RVs become their homes. So there's a market, but a much smaller one than when our economy was strong and fuel cost $2 a gallon.

But do RVers really need a balcony -- one that Country Coach brags is "new and exciting?" The company recently laid off 100 workers and then announced last week that it has trimmed its inventory to fewer than 10 rigs in order to keep costs in line to survive until everybody is prosperous again and demands big rigs with balconies.

I happen to know a lot about RVing because I have been doing it since I was in diapers, and that was not because of old age, but because of young age. My folks took me camping as a little fellow, first in a tent trailer, then a 15-foot travel trailer. When I was still a mere youngster of 34, I bought my first motorhome. . . and off I went. My current motorhome gets 15 miles per gallon or more and is less than 24 feet long. Actually, for camping, it's way overkill. All I'd need for that is a 12-foot tent trailer.

RVing is in my blood, and if gas hits $6 a gallon, I won't stop. I just won't drive very far. And I'm sure there are plenty of other RVers just like me. In my case, I know a very nice campground 30 miles from my house. It's heavily forested, with a small lake where I can catch trout for dinner. That's where I will go when I want to camp with my RV. Until I hit the lottery, I won't be driving 300 miles for a weekend camping trip.

Using an RV for a roadtrip -- driving 100 miles one day, 200 miles the next, day after day -- that's largely over for me and for most other folks of modest means. People with loads of money can keep on going because it doesn't matter to them if they spend another $1,000 a month for gas over what it cost two years before.

What will happen over the next year is that a whole bunch of RV makers are going to get flushed down the economic toilet, and many of the dealers who sell their products will join them. But I think the RV makers who wise up fast and start making small, fuel-efficient motorhomes and lightweight trailers will do just fine and end up dominating the market. I recently returned from Scotland, where RVs are like flies in an outhouse -- everywhere. But they are not monsters on wheels, instead modest-sized RVs seldom longer than 24 feet.

The fact is, lots of people want to go RVing. Many baby boomers have been dreaming about it for a decade or more. They won't give up the dream. But they may not buy the big gas-hog mansions on wheels that feature two bathrooms, built in washer and dryers and slide out balconies. I, for one, can rough it with one bathroom and an occasional visit to the laundromat. And instead of a balcony, I will continue to walk out my front door for fresh air. I have no fear of dirt like the millions of Rupophobics who will be very jazzed about RVs with balconies.

Do you have a comment about this story? Leave it, or read what others say by clicking here.

A DIFFERENT OPINION: RVtravel.com's Jim Twamley has a different opinion of the Veranda motorhome. Read what he thinks and see a video demonstration of how the balcony works.

PHOTO: From the front page of the Veranda website. A couple enjoys the view from a boat launch ramp atop their balcony.

In last week's issue, I wrote about the death of my friend Gaylord Maxwell, who many RVtravel.com readers know through his columns in RV magazines and as the founder of the Life On Wheels conferences. If you missed last week's issue, please take two minutes to watch this short video, where Gaylord tells one of his most inspiring stories.

Top 50 RV dealers named by industry magazine
RV Business Magazine has named its Top 50 RV dealers in America. The awards are not based entirely on sales. "We understand what makes a dealership truly great is not just what it does, but how it gets the job done," explained Sherman Goldenberg, RV Business publisher.  The top five dealers honored were: Alpin Haus, Amsterdam, N.Y.; Guaranty RV, Junction City, Ore.; Lazydays RV Center, Seffner, Fla.; Mike Thompson RV Center, Santa Fe Springs, Calif., and Tom Johnson Camping Center, Marion, N.C.

How to negotiate your best deal on a new RV
Charles Davis of RVfinancing.com offers advice to RV buyers about how to negotiate their best deal with an RV dealer. Davis believes many buyers are too timid about the negotiation process, and therefore end up paying too much -- often way too much. If you plan to buy an RV anytime soon, be sure to watch this video.

Find Services at Interstate Exits
Never take a wrong exit off an Interstate highway again. The 2008 Next Exit lists every exit along every Interstate and details exactly what you will find at each: gas stations (including which brands and if they offer diesel), campgrounds, truck stops, casinos, laundries, retail stores, drug stores, hospitals, rest areas, and more!

Stay free overnight at Wal-Mart
Save $3.35
by purchasing these popular directories together. Most Wal-Mart stores permit a free overnight stay in RVs. The thick 2008 Wal-Mart Atlas provides driving directions to more than 4,000 Wal-Marts and Sam's Clubs. It lists which stores sell diesel, have pharmacies -- and provides store GPS coordinates. The "Wal-Mart No Park" Directory lists more tha
n 350 stores that DO NOT allow stays! Learn more or order.

Replace your power hungry incandescent lights
When it comes to RV lighting, it seems that "imagination" isn't exactly the industry's "trump suit." The old "pillow style" RV lights are everywhere in most RVs. Not that there's anything really wrong with them. The trouble is that many manufacturers throw them "any old place," and as a result, you've got to turn on what seems like dozens of the little varmints to light your RV. Russ and Tina De Maris suggest a better way that uses far less energy.

More about sex in an RV
We told you last issue about a Dear Abby column in which the advice columnist answered a letter from a reader who wanted to know the proper sex etiquette when RVing. Editor Chuck Woodbury offered his own advice, and then RVtravel.com readers weighed in with comments of their own, which you may find interesting.

One in four RVers has been ripped off!

RVer modifies his fifth wheel hitch with great results
Roger Conley from Reese, Michigan decided to invert his 5th wheel hitch in order to give him more room in the truck bed and make it easier to hook-up. He took the idea from the classic goose-neck hitch and improved on it. He says this is a much easier way to hook-up because he doesn't have to get perfect alignment like you do with a goose-neck hitch. Learn more and see photos of Conley's setup.

How to maintain the front entrance steps of an RV
When you think about it, the proper operation of an RV's front entrance steps is very important. The steps on all but basic RVs are automated, and they are easy to take for granted and overlook when performing regular RV maintenance. Here, from Pedeta RV, is a short course in how to keep your steps operating properly. The process is fast and easy. But a few do's and don'ts should be observed to avoid nasty consequences.

Traffic cam shows motorhome accident on freeway
Watch this brief video of a motorhome crashing on the freeway and you'll be reminded of why everyone inside an RV should wear a seatbelt. In a split second, this motorhome goes from routinely traveling down the road to flipping flat on its side right in the middle of the busy highway. The video was captured from a public traffic camera, otherwise the accident would likely never have been documented. Watch it.

Does your motorhome suffer from parasitic loads?
Have you ever parked your motorhome for a while and when you went to start it the battery was dead? Parasitic electric are the reason -- small battery-draining leaches like a stereo, clock, tank gauges, satellite TV in standby mode and security systems. Jim Twamley met a man who installed an inexpensive device that ensures his batteries are always charged. Read all about it.

Tips for Uncluttering Your Life to Fulltime RV
For those who would take up the road to fulltime RVing, unloading clutter from their lives is a necessity, unless they can somehow bring everything along. For some, it almost becomes a chicken and egg thing: Do they take up RVing to rid their life of clutter, or do they rid their life of clutter to go RVing? For most it is the latter, but surprisingly, some are taking up the RV lifestyle to simplify their lives, and getting rid of possessions is part and parcel. Read more.

Driving to Mexico? Be careful about the diesel fuel
In the United States, beginning in 2007, all diesel engines are required to burn ultra low sulfer diesel fuel (ULSD). In Mexico, this new fuel may not be available once you get away from the border, which can be a big problem for rigs or tow vehicles that require it. Learn more.

RVers blog is good reading
Peggi and John McDonald have been writing about RVing on the Web since 2001. Their blog RV Living is good reading -- a mix of news and reports of the McDonalds' life as fulltime RVers. The McDonalds are Canadians who spend a lot of time in the USA, so they offer a unique perspective about RVing in North America. Check out their blog and bookmark it.

RV dealer to close up shop
Hart City RV Supercenter of Elkhart, Indiana has closed and is liquidating its inventory. "We just can't continue to pour money into a sinking ship," said Richard Aker, who owns the business. "The problem really began with the high cost of fuel, and then the money just started to tighten up with the banks, to where they just didn't want to make loans and so they made it harder for people to get credit."

Where do you bake if your RV doesn't have a traditional oven?
Nowadays, many RVs do not have a traditional oven. Typically, there are three stovetop burners and a convection oven. When it's time to "bake" something, apparently RV manufacturers figure everyone will love using their snazzy micro-convection oven to zip through those instant meals in a box (but only if the RV is hooked up to power or running its generator). But what if you aren't one of those convection oven fans? Here are some suggestions.

RV Boondocking Tips

Where to boondock for the night
The following was submitted by a member of the RVtravel.com forum:

Small towns are the easiest and safest places to find a free overnight spot. Most have nice parks with playground equipment, grass, and a perimeter road for camping. Many have water and a nearby dumpster. Churches are a good bet too -- many have very nice level paved lots and won't hassle you about staying. Small towns are desperate for business, so it's polite to buy fuel or patronize the local restaurant. Be careful of the railroad tracks: those whistles can jar you from a sound sleep. Also on the noise issue, get as far from a main road as you can, not only to avoid traffic noise but especially to avoid loud "jake brakes." Truckers often use them on hills or approaching a lower speed limit in city limits.

Truck stops near small towns are a good bet for overnighting too. I like to find an independent gas station/convenience store with a very large lot, perhaps dirt, where I can be well away from the activity and noise of trucks coming and going. Before parking, pay attention to any fresh tire tracks or truck activity so you don't mistakenly end up in the "roadway." That's not good to discover at 11 pm!

Wherever you decide to stop, try to do it in daylight so if the cops are going to roust you, give them time to spot you well before dark. Far better then than while sleeping. I've never been asked to leave by the cops in any small town.

RV Tech Tip by Mark Polk

Make sure your tow vehicle
is rated to pull an RV you plan to buy

If you're about to buy a new trailer or fifth wheel and you already have the vehicle that you plan to use to tow it, you need to find a trailer that is within the weight range of your vehicle. It can be extremely frustrating to find the perfect travel trailer or fifth wheel and then be told that you can't tow it because it's too much weight for your tow vehicle. On the other hand, it can be worse if the sales person at a less-than-reputable RV dealer tells you that you can tow it! This happens every day, and this is why you need to be armed with the right information before you buy. Read more.

Towing advice wanted

I would like to know if any manual transmission car (Suzuki Reno) can be towed four wheels down? What would I have to do to make it possible?

TV antenna handle goes flying
Inside my RV is a handle to crank up the TV antenna. After using it on our last trip, I cranked the handle and brought the antenna to rest in its proper place on the roof. After driving over some rather bumpy terrain, the handle shot off, and the plastic disc and spring went flying. I wonder if the plastic disc is sheared off from a much longer tube up inside the hole in the ceiling. Never having seen the inner workings before, I don't know if I am missing a part or not.

Back-up cameras: how far back can you see?
I'm on my third RV and I now have a "rear camera." How far back should I be able to view? I don't tow a car, but I do have a bike carrier on the back. I carry a small scooter. The carrier is maybe 3-4 feet long. I have noticed that when I'm at a stop light with someone behind me, I can see the front of the car behind my scooter. But if I'm driving and a car is right on my tail, I can't see the car in my camera. I can see my scooter and some space behind the scooter, but I can't see a car on my tail. Can the angles be adjusted?

Charging system question
Can anyone tell me as to whether the charging system on my MH (2005 Bounder 35E) supplies power to the cranking battery when it is plugged into shore power and whether the solar charging system also provided charging to it as well?

Taking pet over border to Vancouver? Help!
