Dear reader, Jim Twamley, the most popular blogger at RVtravel.com, is accused by some of our readers of being Mr. Doom and Gloom about the state of the RV industry and its future.
Jim believes today's bad times in the RV industry will get worse before they get better, and he's not afraid to say so. He has been saying this for a year now, and in the process has angered some readers and executives in the RV industry. But, to those who doubt Jim, the fact is, almost everything he has predicted has come true. I urge you to read Jim's latest posting which is sure to stir the pot some more. Please leave a comment (there will be many, I'm sure).

Monaco, Country Coach now in Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Luxury RV makers Monaco and County Coach both entered into Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Thursday. Their plants have been idle this year and the companies have laid off nearly all their employees, a major blow to Lane County, Oregon. Monaco had tried unsuccessfully for 20 months to turn the company around. It says it owes creditors between $100 million to $500 million. Meanwhile. . . also in Lane County, also on Thursday, a federal judge ordered Country Coach into Chapter 11 bankruptcy, one month after the RV maker's majority owner filed a petition to put the company into involuntary bankruptcy. RVing in the desert? Keep some survival rules in mind
This time of year is just about perfect for boondocking adventures in the desert Southwest. Bring your RV and you'll soon be seeing some really great blooms. This spring will likely prove to be one of the more memorable on record, as the Southwest has had an unusually "wet" season. But while you're out enjoying the beauty, be sure to be prepared: Breakdowns can happen, and even in this day of the GPS, you can actually get lost. Here are some desert survival tips to follow when taking off to the wilderness.

Repairing your RV with putty tape If you do much RV maintenance or repair, chances are good you've already encountered "putty tape." But which putty tape should you use? Here's some advice.

Hospital camping? Some RVers consider finding free places to stay overnight a sport, and occasionally hole up in a hospital parking lot. Nobody pays much attention because other RVers are commonly there while visiting patients. But a sign that points to "Hospital Camping?" Well, as you probably guessed, in this case, the hospital and campground are simply in the same direction.

A Woman's Perspective
Don't run out of propane By Adrienne Kristine
Have you ever run out of propane while cooking dinner? Pick up a one-gallon propane bottle and an Extend-a-Stay kit to tide you over. Both can be purchased at Camping World or other RV supply stores. Many RVers use a five-gallon tank with the kit so they don't have to move the RV to fill the built-in tank. For me, the one-gallon tank is smaller and I use it indoors with my portable Mr. Buddy heater when I boondock. The extra tank and Extend-a-Stay will ensure you never run out of propane.

Mice in her RV. What to do?
Dear RV Doctor, I have developed a mouse problem in my RV. My unit is currently parked on a seasonal site. This past winter it was winterized and all the vents covered and they still got in. I put out four trays of D-Con about four weeks ago and went up today to check on it and all the trays were empty. What can I do to discourage them from coming in? Should I add moth balls or put out more D-Con? I have been told that the D-Con actually invites them, but I don't want them to stay so I figured that was the best thing to do. Please help. I have a new trailer and I don't want it ruined! --Karen KenneyRead Gary's response. Read previous RV Doctor columns

RV Boondocking Tips
Sour Holding Tank Can Spoil Your Day By Russ and Tina De Maris
One full-timing couple we know had a nasty experience with a smelly holding tank. The odors were SO rank they ran them out of their rig. They had been using an enzyme-based holding tank treatment for a long time with no problems. But when sitting in the same boondocking location for months on end, the tank "soured" from lack of movement.
To resolve the issue, the tank was dumped, then immediately refilled nearly to the top with fresh water, with two cups of baking soda diluted with water to "top it off." The soda solution was allowed to "brew" for a couple of days, then the tank dumped. A fresh "start" of the enzyme holding tank treatment was added and everything returned to normal. Moral of the story: Your holding tank does better when it has a chance to "slosh around," but if it can't, then you may have to use this "sweetening" trick.
Russ and Tina De Maris are the authors of RV Boondocking Basics.

Neglecting RV batteries is a bad thing RV coach batteries are one of the most important and neglected components in the RV. The converter in an RV also has a battery charger. Whenever you are plugged in to electricity or the generator is running, the coach batteries are being charged. They are also being charged by the automotive alternator when you are driving the RV or in the case of a towable RV if you had a charge line wired into the light plug. This constant charging can deplete the electrolyte levels in the batteries cells. If a battery is not maintained properly it will fail much sooner than it should. Depending on how often a battery is being charged will determine how often the electrolyte level needs to be checked. Read more.

Highway Hostesses kept American gas stations clean
It was the 1930s and American motorists were fed up with filthy gas
station restrooms. The average
restroom was suitable for only the most germ-defying motorist -- no
place to "rest," for sure, especially for the dainty ladies. It was a
filthy never-never land of bacteria and brake fluid, a home for the motoring brave, but mostly the desperate. The American gas station restroom needed a major
overhaul. In 1939, Phillips 66 geared up for one of the nation's most
creative clean up acts. It hired a half dozen registered nurses, sent
them briefly to restroom cleaning school, and then dispatched them to
the road to inspect potties. We told you about this story awhile back in this newsletter, but it's worth another look.

Where is the best place to buy 6-volt deep cycle batteries? I now have two Interstate U2200 6v deep cycle batteries whose better days are behind them. How do I remove the plastic cover off my RV light? I'm staying in a borrowed late-1980s Allegro 27' motorhome. One of the fluorescent tubes in the kitchen light burned out. I can't figure out how to get the darn plastic cover off to take a look! I was told that if I just squeezed it in the center, it would pop right off, but it seems to be latched into place somehow or maybe glued? Any ideas?
Comment on staying overnight at Wal-Mart
When traveling south for the winter, driving long hours on the road and looking just for a place to pull over for the night for a few hours of sleep, there are two choices: Wal-Mart or the rest areas. I've stayed in both. The rest areas are noisy and filled with big rigs (maybe should be used more for the big rigs; that's what they were intended for in the first place). All the Wal-Marts I have stayed in have been great, and I always spend money in the store where I stay. Also there is usually the company of other RVers there to add comfort and security to the experience. I hope RVers do not take for granted what we have here and spoil it with slideouts, awnings, chairs, etc. Let's keep the traveling spirit real and head on down the road knowing that we as RVers are not unwelcome. Comments invited.
Gray water cable snapped When pulling the gray water handle this morning to drain the tank, the cable snapped. What is involved in fixing this? Is it a professional job or can a talented handyman do it? Does it depend on the type of RV when you call a repair person? What question should I be asking that I'm not thinking to ask?

Random RV Thought Today, there is little difference in the convenience of living in a traditional home and living in an RV on the road. Cell phones allow us to make and receive phone calls from anywhere. Mail forwarding services make getting mail simple. Laptop computers are as powerful as most desktop models and are able to surf the Internet at Broadband speeds from almost everywhere. Portable stereos (iPods, etc), TV satellite systems and other high tech gadgets enable us to bring along music and movie libraries. RVs are so sophisticated and roomy that they are as comfortable as a small house. So, for many RVers, the slogan "Home Sweet Home" has been replaced with "Home Sweet Roam."

Tourist Attraction Spotlight
Get low in Badwater We guarantee something: if you visit Badwater in Death Valley National Park, you will always consider the experience a low point in your life. That's because Badwater (Calif.) is the lowest spot in the Western Hemisphere at 282 feet (86.0 m) below sea level. There isn't a whole lot to see at Badwater, but you can walk out on the huge salt plain and enjoy the vastness of the landscape. And perhaps you will find it remarkable that at that moment you and other visitors are lower than everyone else in the Western Hemisphere. The paved park road leads to Badwater where there's parking for even the biggest RVs.
