Dear reader,
I am thrilled to report that an RV television show will soon be back on the air. RVTV, hosted by Rob Engman, will debut next month on the Versus TV network, which reaches 83 percent of all U.S. households. The weekly 30-minute show will also appear on Channel 151 on the DISH channel and on Channel 603 on DirectTV. RVTV had previously aired on the much smaller Outdoor Channel.

Versus' regular coverage includes NFL Hockey, the Tour de France, the Indy Race Series and college football. The RV Today Show hosted by Stew Oleson had run on Versus when the network was known as the Outdoor Life Channel, or OLN, but was canceled several years ago.

I'll give you a heads up in this newsletter before the first show debuts. So stay tuned.

Surprising results in last week's reader survey
I never expected the outcome of last week's RVtravel.com survey when I asked how long ago you first read this newsletter. A whopping 82 percent of the nearly 1,400 people who responded said it was more than two years ago. I wish now I had asked how many of you have read this newsletter since I first published it in 2001. Still, it made me feel very good to know that so many of you have been reading for a long time.

Cheap RV
I spotted this old Winnebago in a parking lot not far from my office, for sale for $1,500. I stopped for a few seconds, snapped a photo, and then moved on.

It's pretty much a junker. Someone will buy it, I suppose. I know there are thousands of "homeless" people living in rigs like this these days. It's affordable housing, and a lot better than living in a cardboard box. Still, where does a person who has virtually no money come up with even $1,500?

This old RV reminded me of my first motorhome, a 1970s-era, 18-footer that I bought for $8,000. That RV was nothing but problems -- its engine broke down every other trip, the roof leaked, the heater barely worked, it had no insulation, and a single automotive battery powered both the engine and the coach. I cursed that RV many times, but, in the end it took me to great places and I loved it.

The old Winnebago pictured here could tell stories -- of its previous owners, a family perhaps, and where they traveled. I bet it was loved. But no more. Maybe a handyman will fix it up and it will be loved again.

I've been thinking about this motorhome for a couple of days, trying to understand why I felt compelled to snap the photo. I never could get an answer. Does the photo bring any thoughts to your mind? If so, please leave them in our forum.

Maine "Almost" RV parking ban still echoes
As has been much publicized around RVtravel.com, a bill in the Maine legislature that would have killed off overnight parking in parking lots and elsewhere, has been withdrawn. No doubt the loud reaction of RVers and others who inundated Maine politicos caused the flip-flop. But just because the bill has been yanked, doesn't mean the noise has stopped. Letters about the proposed ban, pro and con, continue to flitter across letters-to-the-editor newspaper pages throughout the state. Read more.

Changing to a new motorhome can be all about the RV bed

Why RVs catch fire and how to protect yours from burning
RV fire safety is something most RVers don't think about or discuss very often, but it's a topic that deserves serious attention. Do you know that there are about 20,000 reported RV fires each year? Do you know what to do in the event of a fire in or around your RV? If you said no, don't feel bad; a lot of other people don't know either. RV expert Mark Polk explains why recreational vehicles catch fire and how to ensure yours doesn't go up in flames.

Handyman RVer asks Doc for advice about installing powered vent on rubber roof

Hello Gary,
This is my first question for the RV Doctor. I just purchased a replacement powered vent for the bathroom of my rubber roofed Class A motorhome. I'm handy with tools and want to replace it myself. I know there is extra sealant applied around the existing exterior flange. The existing vent is a fan type also, so I won't have to run power. I'm concerned about the sealant and I don't want to damage the rubber roof while trying to get the old vent off. I know I need butyl putty tape and screws. Could you walk me through the procedure? --Richard Craig

RV Boondocking Tips

Give the Switch to Phantom Power Loads
By Russ and Tina De Maris
Phantom loads eating up your batteries? Look around -- an RV stereo system, typically operating on 12 volts, often is "on" all the time. Some RVers have put a switch on the "always on" hot lead to the stereo (and other systems like this) and turned off this power drain when not using the appliance. NEVER defeat hot leads to safety equipment like LP detectors.

Tech Tips

How to prevent premature RV tire failure

Dear Mark,
Overloading your RV is likely the leading cause of tire failure. Poor weight distribution and using all of the storage space offered on today's recreational vehicles result in tire overloads. The only way to learn if your RV is too heavy or loaded improperly is to have it weighed on platform scales while fully loaded.

Under inflated tires run a close second to overloading as a leading cause of tire failure. The load rating for a tire is only accurate if the tire is properly inflated. Under inflated tires cause extreme heat build up that leads to tire failure. The appearance of the tire may look normal but the internal damage can cause the tire to fail without warning.

Tires can loose up to two pounds of air pressure per month. If you don't check your tires for three or four months they could be seriously under inflated. Ozone and UV rays from the sun shorten the life of your tires. It is not uncommon to see RV tires with low mileage and plenty of tread ruined by the damaging effects of ozone and UV rays.  Read more.

Questions about power cord, power for RV air conditioner
I have a 1985 Class C "Lindy" by Skyline. I'm taking it to Florida to park in a friend's driveway for a week. I have a 30-amp 25' extension cord for the power that I'll be plugging into an outlet in her garage using an adapter. I don't think the rooftop air conditioning will need to be run all the time. What do I need to look out for? We've done this before but didn't use the AC. I would feel the cord and never felt it get hot. How many amps will it pull? Where do I look to find out? I can't imagine it would pull any more than a small window 110 unit.

Norcold fault code
My Norcold fridge has quit working again. The fault code is "no co." Does anyone know what that means or where I might find the answer? The paperwork does not list that one.

Where do I fill my fresh water tank?
Where do folks get fresh water to refill storage tanks? Is this simple, or can it be tricky with poor water quality that may even be hazardous to a person's health? Do folks drink straight from the supply tanks? Or is a filter system for drinking water preferred? Single, double cartridge, R.O., etc.? I suppose bacteria is the most common health hazard in water supplies. Has anyone noticed any other contaminants? I suppose these types of hazards are posted at the supply site. Are refill sites usually pay sites? Public (government-sponsored) or private? Does anyone have "Rules of Thumb" for finding water supplies to refill fresh water tanks?

Should engine or coach battery be used to start generator?
Where should the generator get its starting power, from the coach batteries or the engine battery? Mine is presently getting it from a smaller temporary battery, but was originally wired to the coach batteries. I'm going to remove the small temporary battery and hook it back up to the coach batteries. It just seems like the engine battery would be the place to connect it to. Opinions?

Slideout squeaks and problems
The three slides on our 2008 Montana 5er are squeaking when going in and out. Also, our larger slide stops when putting it in. We stop for 30 seconds, push the button and then it goes in all the way. Any suggestions?

Family name signs on RVs
I think everyone has them or at least has seen a lot of them in the campgrounds throughout the States and Canada: the wooden signs with the family names on them that hang somewhere on the front of the camper. I'm planning on making my own but want to know what information people usually put on them. So let me know what you have on yours or better yet, if you have a picture so I can see the general style and layout. That would be great. Thanks everybody.

Random RV Thought
At home when you run out of something that you need for dinner, you make a fast trip to the supermarket. But when you are camping far from a store, there is nowhere to go. And thus begins a process of going through the cupboards or fridge to try to find what can be used as a substitute. More often than not, something is found and the meal is a success. Actually, this process can be very creative and adds a bit of a challenge to getting by while on the road.
