ROADTREK MOTORHOMES:
The Fuel Efficient Motorhomes You'll Love to Drive! Learn all about them here.
Editor's Corner

By Chuck Woodbury
RVing in 1937
See a two minute newsreel from nearly 70 years ago celebrating "one million" RVers on the road. Read the editor's comments to the left to learn more.

I have a treat for you -- an old movie newsreel about RVing. Would you believe that back in 1937, the movie industry was promoting the fact that "one million" RVers were on the road in the USA? They didn't use the term RVers back then, instead simply calling the vehicles "Homes On Wheels." And wait until you see the scenes at a Florida RV park, where the price of a week's stay was only. . . actually, you need to hear it for yourself.

The movie newsreel is located at the brand new website RV.TV produced by a friend of mine, Chuck Cirino. Right now, the website is just getting underway. But I cannot resist sharing this historic newsreel with you. It's only about two minutes long, but I bet you will want to share it with your friends once you see it. You will probably need a high speed Internet connection to see it properly, however. To view the newsreel, go to RV.TV and click on the top video. You will love this!!

Do you own a motorhome?
If you do, you should consider joining the Family Motor Coaching Association. I have been a member for more than 20 years. For motorhome owners, this should be a "must join" organization. The thick monthly magazine alone is worth the annual membership. FMCA has agreed to offer a special new member price of $35 to RVtravel readers ($10 off the regular first-year price).

The results of last week's reader survey were interesting. We asked what kind of pet you bring with you on your RV trips. Well, the most popular pet is a dog, no surprise there. Only 11 percent of those who bring a pet bring a cat, which makes sense: cats don't fare as well in unfamiliar territory as dogs, which are usually the first in line when it's time to hit the road. Read the
survey results here. I adopted a cat once at a Grand Junction, Colo., campground. Actually, he was adopted for me by a friend. Alas, Rocky was not a travelin' kinda guy. His favorite traveling position was with the fur on his back straight up and his claws firmly attached to the screen door. So Rocky only made one RV trip, which was just fine with him.

Don't forget to register your tires
When buying new tires for your vehicle, don't forget to fill out a tire registration form and mail it back to the manufacturer, reminds the Tire Industry Safety Council. "The purpose of tire registration is to enable the manufacturer to contact you directly in the event of a recall," said Council Chairman Donald B. Shea. "While a recall is unlikely, it's important to make sure your tires are properly registered just in case."

Boondocking Tip
By Russ and Tina De Maris

Propane cylinders
Left untreated, propane cylinders eventually get dinged and develop rust. Rust can weaken the integrity of the cylinder and in some localities a propane seller can refuse to fill a "visibly rusted" LP bottle. If yours is worse for wear, prepare to paint. Use masking tape to carefully wrap up the valve assembly, and sand down the tank with fine grade sand paper. Dust it off with a cloth then shoot it with a couple of coats of good quality rust inhibiting paint. Allow time between coats to meet recommendations. Before you slam it around and have a chance to ding it up, let a few days elapse (if possible) for the paint to "cure." We paint ours when we have another "full" cylinder freshly installed. -- Russ and Tina De Maris are the authors of the book RV Boondocking Basics and the eBook Boondocking Tips for RVers.

Trivia
Daylight-saving time was instituted in the U.S. during World War I to save energy for war production by taking advantage of later hours of daylight. During World War II the federal government again required states to observe the time change. In 1966, Congress standardized the seasonal time change. Daylight-saving time works by "making" the sun "set" one hour later, thus reducing the period between sunset and bedtime by one hour. So, April through October less electricity is used for lighting.

RV Tech Tip by Mark Polk
Inverters
Inverters are nice to have at times when you are dry camping and/or when you don't have access to 120-volts AC. Batteries produce power in Direct Current (DC) that run at low voltages. Power companies and AC generators produce sine wave Alternating Current (AC), which is used to operate 120-volt appliances and electronic equipment. An inverter takes 12-volt DC power from your RV batteries and electronically changes it to 120-volt AC. Some RVers use an inverter just to watch TV or for their personal computer.

Random RV Thought

Periodically, check your RV's stock of flashlight batteries. And make sure you have a couple of flashlights aboard your RV. They come in handy in dark campgrounds and can be life savers in emergencies. It's also a good idea to carry a battery-powered radio. Even better is a self-powered radio that operates after it is briefly hand-cranked.
