I plug this device into my Apple Powerbook's USB port and a few seconds later I am surfing the Web at impressively fast speeds
Let me tell you how impressed I am with my new and improved Broadband Wireless Internet plan from Verizon Wireless. A little history: about five years ago, I signed up for Verizon's service that allowed me to use my cell phone to connect my Apple laptop computer to the Internet. I got on at 14.4k, which while painfully slow, seemed like a miracle: I could access email from my campsite and access the Web (slowly) in an emergency. My online use was charged the same as talking time.
A couple of years ago I upgraded to a new plan that allowed faster, unlimited access to the Web using my cell phone as a modem -- broadband speed in major metro areas and dial up speed in the boonies. What an improvement! This freed me to travel more often and still manage my business. But service was unavailable in many rural areas, which limited where I could travel or camp and have Internet access.
Three months ago I upgraded to the latest plan that allows me to plug a PC card-type device into my Powerbook's USB port (freeing the cell phone). This plan (available for PC users as well) uses a new technology called Rev-A. On my recent trips to Idaho and Oregon, I surfed the Internet at three to 10 times dialup speed in rural areas, and even in "Extended Network" areas where Verizon does not offer its own service!
Last week, along the Oregon coast, I could have stayed in about 90 percent of the state park or forest service campgrounds and enjoyed this fast service. With my first plan, I was not able to get online anywhere in the area.
Because my cell phone service is through Verizon, I was able to add this Internet option for a $59 a month, which is for unlimited use. For non-Verizon customers, the charge is slightly higher. For RVers who NEED a fast Internet connection, this is a superb solution.
