Editor's Corner

By Chuck Woodbury

The devastating fires in Southern California illustrate again the advantage of owning an RV in time of an emergency. More than half a million Southern California residents in harms' way were forced to leave their homes, often on a moment's notice. Those with RVs could flee in their rigs and still maintain a roof over their heads.

This October 22 NASA image shows the billowing smoke from the California fires.
Media images from San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium showed countless RVs in the parking lot -- not tailgaters to a football game this time, but people whose homes were either burned or in danger of burning. Others jammed local State Parks, where rangers waived entry and camping fees.

Some RVers fled the local area for cleaner air. "If our home burns, we'll just keep on going and travel for six months," one evacuee told a newspaper reporter.

I'll bet that those RVers with an hour's notice or more were able to round up some of their most valuable personal possessions and load them aboard -- certainly with more storage space than in an automobile.

Those RVers who return to find their homes in ashes can hole up on their property in their recreational vehicles while rebuilding or while deciding what to do next.

At our office recently, a member of our staff suggested we put together a survival kit in case we were stuck there in an emergency. Even in the mild Pacific Northwest we occasionally experience a bad snowstorm or dangerous ice on roadways. Most of the items on Erin's survival list are already aboard my RV, which is parked inside our warehouse. "So as long as the RV is here we have everything we need including a heated space and kitchen," I reminded her.

Emergencies often arrive with little or no warning -- hurricanes like Katrina, earthquakes, tornadoes, blizzards or even just temporary power outages -- and when they do, those of us with provisioned RVs are the lucky ones: we can either flee or hole up and wait out the emergency in relative comfort.

Yes, RVs are for fun. But there are times when they can be life savers, or at least lifestyle savers.

The interstate gets a bit scarier for RVs
Traveling on the interstate could be more challenging for some RVers these days. It's not that other drivers are going faster, or that the roadways are deteriorating. Here's the reason.

RV workcampers: avoid this type of work
Some RV workcamping jobs are better than others. Here's one line of work you should be especially leery of, judging by feedback from RVers who have done it.
Information.

Secure that loose mud flap on your RV
Since RVs are a collection of many small components, chances are that something's will break or malfunction on a fairly regular basis. The good news is that regardless of what goes wrong, it's fixable. And often, the RVer can do the repair. For instance,
here's what to do if a mud flap comes loose on your RV.

Every year, surgical tools are left in approximately 1,500 patients in the USA. Fatter patients are more prone to having a surgical tool left inside of them due to the additional amount of space in their bodies.

Fire Safety Tip from Mac McCoy
Driving with propane on can add to the danger if you are involved in an accident or have a fire. Most refrigerators will keep food cold or frozen for eight hours without running while you travel. Shut the propane off at the tank.

Eliminate rain leaks at your RV's running lights
Rain is an enemy of RVs when it leaks in, and running lights are a common entry point. You shouldn't just ignore leakage there, because it can work its way farther into the RV and cause damage.
Here are several ways to eliminate the problem.

Happy days are here again for one RV manufacturer
Some RV manufacturers have experienced tough times in the last several years due to various economic factors, including the rising price of fuel. But at least one large RV company, for now,
has reason to smile.

Secret in keeping your rig spotless?
I have been on the road for almost two weeks. Everywhere I went I noticed how clean everyone's rigs were. Then I would look at mine and shake my head. Although I try to keep it clean, it always gets dirty on the road. What is ya'll secret in keeping your rigs spotless?

Bent jack
I think I bent the piston rod on my front HWH leveling jack. Is there a way to repair these as they look to be a welded unit?

Another question for the experienced
This question is posed because I have been told and read somewhere that your generator should run approximately 30 minutes a week to "stay in shape", circulate necessary fluids, and to be "ready" when needed. I use mostly campgrounds and state parks with electric hookups so my generator has not been "on" 30 minutes all year. Is it advisable to travel and run your generator at the same time?

Storing RV with jacks down
Is there any advantage to the tires if I store my RV with the jacks down taking weight off of the tires?

Thinking about full-timing with kids 11 and 9
I'm at the very beginning of considering a major life change. I have 2 daughters who are already home schooled, ages 11 and 9. We travel a LOT as it is for my business (16-18 weeks a year). I grew up traveling in a 15' trailer with my parents and 2 brothers, so anything with plumbing is an improvement. What kinds of challenges would I face? My other issue would be costs. The rig would be paid for up front, so it would just be our living expenses we'd need to worry about. Any thoughts/advice/tips?
