Editor's Corner

By Chuck Woodbury

I messed up on last week's issue. The problem was the headline in its email alert: "Why some casinos say 'No' to RV parking."

Thousands of readers clicked the link, where they found a posting on our casino camping blog that was far from comprehensive: it didn't come close to living up to the promise of the "Cover story" headline. I received a hundred angry emails, and other readers voiced their disapproval in the comments area of the blog posting.

Here is the explanation of how the headline came to be. In racing to get the issue done, I saw the posting on our website about why casinos don't always allow RV parking, and I just wrote the headline without reading the article carefully. Big mistake and certainly not very professional! In the end, it wasn't that the blog posting by Jane Kenny was bad, it just wasn't comprehensive enough to deserve the headline treatment.

And so for those of you who were let down or even angry about my violation of good journalism practices, I apologize.

To back up a little, the article was prompted by a letter we posted earlier from an RVer who had been treated rudely at the Thunder Valley Casino in northern California when he tried to park his motorhome in the parking lot. The casino that had once welcomed RVers suddenly and without explanation proclaimed "No RVs Allowed." Jane Kenny's posting explained the casino's change of policy but did not explain why, which is what readers wanted to know.

So I followed up to get an explanation. My discussion with the casino's PR representative not only got me an answer but it prompted the casino to once again permit RVs in its parking lot (we think). Read my story.

Yikes! What a paint job on this fifth wheel trailer!
This looks like a hippy mobile but it's simply the creation of an RVing couple who just didn't think the factory graphics on their RV were good enough. So they hired an artist who transformed their new fifth wheel into a traffic stopping, hummingbird attracting, child enthralling, mobile work of art. Beauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder. What to look for in an RV storage facility
Some RV storage facilities are better than others. If you're thinking about putting your RV in one for the upcoming winter, protect your trailer or motorhome by doing some research to make sure the facility you choose is secure.

Use this product for thread-less RV faucets
Some faucets RVers want to use for filling the water tank or flushing the holding tank lack threads. How then to you attach the hose? Simply holding the hose end to the faucet results in a slow flow and a very wet arm.
Here's a better idea.

How towns say "Hello"

We all know them -- billboards at the city limits of small communities that proclaim the towns' claims to fame "Pinto Bean Capital of the World" or "Home to Miss Junior Miss 2006." Well, RVtravel.com editor Chuck Woodbury has noticed many of these friendly signs and put together a short video essay about some of his favorites.

A bright future for RVing despite economic downturn?
Major RV manufacturers have turned in poor economic performances lately, but the RV industry's biggest organization says that the future of RVing is bright.
See why.

Trivia. . .
Motor vehicle rollovers are more likely to occur on rural roads and highways -- particularly undivided, two-way roads or divided roads with no barriers. When a vehicle goes off a rural road, the vehicle can overturn when it strikes a ditch or embankment, or is tripped by soft soil. Nearly 75 percent of all rollover crashes occur in rural areas.

Inside walls of RV
We have a 93 Holiday Rambler that was being painted and the company that was painting it left it out in the rain with just paper on the windows, and so we got water down through the walls. The wallpaper is coming off but not all the way. Where can I find "paper walls" to replace it or what can I do? We also had to take the "end tables" from the walls to take out the carpet that got wet in the bedroom area, and a few holes had to be put in to get them away from the walls and that is why we need "need walls" for the bedroom area. Anyone have any ideas?

RV shows on television
Does anyone know of any televised RV shows on television? I miss Stew and his 1/2 hour show.

Ogilby Road/Yuma, AZ/CA? and Algodones
Can someone please give us info on boondocking on Ogilby Road? Is this LTVA area? I gather the location is still AZ or is it already CA? How far is it from Yuma approximately? I heard you can go on a daytrip crossing the border by foot to Algodones.

Best winter spots
My husband and I are looking for some good spots for winter. Where do RVers go?

How much to pay?
I can find out what to pay for a used RV at NADA and other websites, but I haven't found a site that tells me what to pay for a new RV. Some of the dealers I have visited show a sticker price of $32K and then they show their "unbeatable low price" of $22K. Sounds good, $10K off without haggling them. However, I want to know that I am getting the best deal possible but have never purchased a brand-new RV. Is there a website that will tell you how much others are paying? Even with the 10K off price,
can I still haggle them down 3-4k like on a car?
