Editor's Corner
By guest editor Jim Twamley

Noah Had An Ark, You Have An RV
We Navy types, having spent months at sea without seeing land, know the importance of maintaining emergency equipment. You sleep easier knowing your emergency gear is there and ready should the need arise. The same applies to your RV because it can serve as a means of escape and survival in a time of crisis.

Many families who live in hurricane prone areas keep their RVs stocked and ready to go when a storm is on the way. In disaster areas lodging is difficult to find because out-of-town aid workers occupy all the rooms for miles around. Your RV, no matter what kind it is, is your key to survival. Earthquake specialists predict a monster earthquake will eventually strike the west coast. When the "Big One" finally does occur, folks with RVs will be way ahead of the game.

A properly maintained RV, stocked with food, clothing, emergency medical supplies, fresh water, full propane tanks and a fully charged battery system is a "life boat" in such a situation. Natural disasters, no matter what kind, usually cut off water, power and gas supplies to populated areas. Having a fully self-contained RV is just the beginning, because you also need to know how to conserve your resources. RVers who frequently "dry camp" are very good at this and are better equipped to survive a natural disaster. I recommend keeping your RV in top shape and ready to go at all times.

Bizarre RV roadside attraction ordered to go away
Remember that weird Airstream Ranch that popped up a few months ago along Interstate 4 near Dover, Florida? The owner of a local RV dealership, Frank Bates, "planted" eight Airstream trailers on his property nose first, calling it art. Neighbors disagreed. And now, Bates has been ordered by the county to remove the trailers. Read more at RV News Service.

RV makers lay off more workers
Sluggish RV sales are taking a toll on manufacturers' work forces. This month Country Coach has handed pink slips to eight percent of its workforce, which amounts to about 100 employees. Western RV Inc. of Yakima, Wash., is laying off 47 hourly production workers, representing a 17 percent decrease in the company's work force from 278 employees to 231. The year 2008 has not started off well for motorized RV sales. Class A and C motorhome sales were down 16.9% in January from a year ago. According to data from Grand Rapids, Mich. based Statistical Surveys Inc., motorhome sales in January totaled 2,575 units compared with 3,098 in 2007.

RV Tech Corner
with Mark Polk

Deep cell batteries
The batteries used to supply 12-volts to the RV itself are commonly referred to as house batteries. House batteries need to be deep cycle batteries that are designed to provide a steady amount of current over a long period of time. Starting batteries and marine batteries should not be used in this application. True deep cycle batteries have much thicker plates and are designed to be deeply discharged and recharged over and over again. These batteries are rated in Amp Hours and more recently Reserve Capacity. The amp hour rating is basically how many amps the battery can deliver for how many hours before the battery is discharged. Amps times hours. In other words a battery that can deliver 5 amps for 20 hours before it is discharged would have a 100 amp hour rating 5 Amps X 20 Hours = 100 Amp Hours. This same battery can deliver 20 amps for 5 hours 20 Amps X 5 Hours = 100 Amp Hours. Reserve Capacity rating (RC) is the number of minutes at 80 degrees F that the battery can deliver 25 amps until it drops below 10.5 volts. To figure the amp hour rating you can multiply the RC rating by 60 percent. RC X 60 percent.

Boondocking Tip
By Russ and Tina De Maris

Add More Solar Power:
The nice thing about RV solar power is you can "add on" to the system as needs increase. There are a couple of caveats to consider before you rush out and buy another solar panel. First, make sure your panel controller has sufficient "muscle" to handle the increased power. Add up the amount of current that all panels will produce, and ensure it doesn't exceed the panel controller ratings. Next, consider the amount of storage capacity you have. It doesn't make any sense to invest a lot of money in solar panels if your battery capacity will be outstripped. It's like pouring water into a glass. When the glass is full, to keep pouring is a waste. If your batteries are regularly getting fully charged with what solar panels you have, you'll need to add more battery storage capacity if you want to take advantage of more solar power.

Where can I find an RV toilet seat cover?
Yeah, not of Earth-shaking importance, I'll freely admit, but I would like a soft, cushy cover for the lid on my Thetford Throne in the motorhome. I searched Camping World to no avail. It would be really nice to find someone making these in the Quartzsite crowd and buying from one of our "own," but any info is appreciated.

Oh rats
I've got a hint that I'll share with you that could prevent problems down the road. Where we live we have a bad mouse problem. We live out in the country and are surrounded by farm land. Even though we have 3 outdoor cats, we still have problems with mice/rats getting into our vehicles plugging up the heater vents, making nests on top of the motor, and packing cat/dog food onto the motor or trunk of my GoldWing. The solution that has worked the best for us is that I buy the small blue/green colored rat bars at Home Depot. I put one on some wire, then mount it back by the firewall or someplace where it doesn't get wet in the rain, like behind the air cleaner. This works great as it stops the pest before it can do any damage to our vehicles. I know some people don't like poison, but better that than having your rig catch fire because the wiring got chewed up and shorted out. Have any of you had this problem and what did you do to fix it?

Sewer odor when traveling
I do not consider us newcomers as we have been traveling now for four years, but we still cannot get rid of having a sewer odor when we are traveling. I had a vent installed on the roof last year and it has not helped a bit. I have bought every product out there to put in the tank and it still does not help. It will overcome us after we get parked for the night. I leave the bathroom window open when I can but that only helps a little. If we are parked, we do not get it, only after we have been traveling. Any help for this?

Forest River RVs
I am in the process of purchasing a travel trailer. Down to my short list of 5 different models in which 3 of them are Forest River models. Since I am from Canada, the construction of the RV is a greater factor due to our harsh winters. The models in question are the Salem, Wildwood, and Cherokee. From my limited understanding, the construction seems to be quite identical across all three since they probably all come from the same production line. The difference would lie in the finish. Would this be an accurate statement?

What size generator for an RV trailer?
New to RVing, this RVer wants a generator for his travel trailer but is confused over what he needs and what to expect in performance. If you're in a similar position, you'll want to read RVing expert Mark Polk's answer.

Modern RVs are high-tech marvels
Many new RVers think of RVs as simple, spartan vehicles that are just a couple of steps up from tents. The truth is, modern RVs are remarkably sophisticated and can have more electronic systems than a house. So if you're thinking of buying an RV, rest assured that you won't have to give up gadgets and luxuries. More.
