Editor's Corner
By guest editor Jim Twamley

RVing forces you
outdoors where you belong
On days when the sky is blue and the sun touches your skin, RVers look for any excuse to get outside. In your heart stirs a longing to break free and launch out in your RV to places that are wild and refreshing. You envision camping next to a quiet meadow with a cold brook running through it or by a mountain lake. Even places of solitude are full of life offering a chance to catch your breath and relax outdoors.

This week I've been climbing the chocolate-colored hills around Yuma, Arizona. They look hot and desolate yet are teeming with life. Ascending the crest of a rocky slope, I came across a blaze of color. Here, among the unfriendly rocks blooms some of the most glorious color you'll see in the desert. A cactus flower, visited by hummingbird and bee, provides both beauty and nourishment in this most desolate place.

In the valley below RVers enjoy warmth and leisure. They have broken free, for the moment, from demanding lifestyles which can so easily overwhelm. Like the cactus flower, they are thriving in the desert, replenishing themselves before they must return to the demands of civilization.

Grim news on the fuel front
Expect to pay more to get to your favorite campground in the weeks ahead. Oil industry experts now say gas and diesel prices will continue to soar through spring. The national average retail price for gas has risen about 30 cents in the past month to $3.279 a gallon, exceeding the all-time high set last year, according to AAA. Industry experts say motorists should prepare to pay nearly $4 a gallon -- and more in some places -- before the price decreases in the late spring. Meanwhile, the price of diesel has risen even faster and is now $1.50 a gallon more than a year ago.

The price of gasoline usually increases this time of year for several reasons: low refinery output due to maintenance, a switch from winter to pricier summer blends, and the looming high-demand summer driving season.

Why have diesel prices jumped so high? Jim Twamley has the answer.

CUT YOUR RV EXPENSES: Remember: one way to stretch your RVing dollar is to take advantage of free and inexpensive camping opportunities. FreeCampgrounds.com is your best source of these locations.

Why a cheap RV may be best for you. Or not!

Be safe with your generator
Safety first! Always keep in mind when you use a generator there is carbon monoxide. You should always inspect the exhaust system on the generator set before using it. Do not operate a generator with a damaged exhaust system. If you're using a portable generator set, make sure the exhaust is directed away from the camping area. Test your carbon monoxide detector for proper operation prior to using the generator. Never run a generator when you or anyone else is sleeping. Observe campground etiquette. Do not run your generator after quiet hours.

Boondocking Tip
By Russ and Tina De Maris

Need to Keep Cool?
You can keep you and your rig cool without the expense of firing up your air conditioner even on fairly hot days. One secret is properly using your rig's awning, combined with a shade cloth screen. Orient your rig so that as little of the rig is "seen" by the sun during the hot part of the day. Run out your awning, and tilt it to provide as much shade as possible. Some RV suppliers sell "awning track eyelets" which are reinforced cloth gadgets that fit in your RV awning track. With these gizmos in place, hook one end of an "S" hook in the awning track, the other end to an eyelet in your shade cloth. Voila! Instant "Arizona Room," where you can retreat from the heat of the day.

Kooler Aire: Has anyone tried this thing
http://www.kooleraire.com/index.htm I'm wondering how long the ice will last when it's 100F+ outside. I have a Class B van so there's not much area to cool. I suspect this is only designed to be placed near a chair or the bed like the Swampy. Still, if it works well enough, it's worth the price for a cool(er) night's sleep. Anybody have one? What do you think of it?

Making the Banks plunge
I'm on the verge of ordering the complete Banks system for the old beater. Am I really going to be able to get the old exhaust manifold bolts out without breaking them? And after I break them off in the head, then what?

Don't believe the salesman?
We think we are OK to head out on our first trip, but have some nagging doubts. We have a Chevy Colorado, tow rating 4000lbs, total trailer and truck 8000lbs. We figured a dry weight trailer of 3000lbs would be OK (we were told to plan on 1000lbs of "extra" weight). The salesman told us the 3300lb TT would be "fine; no problem." We added a weight distribution hitch to the pickup. Now though, we are worried about the weight. Are we too heavy to be safe? Do we need to upsize to maybe a 1/2 ton PU? We would love to hear everyone's advice before we head out. What do you think?

Is class III hitch possible on a popup trailer?
We just purchased a popup trailer and was wondering if it was possible to put a hitch on the back of it, with reinforcement, to put a bike rack holder or a platform to put a small trunk on to hold misc. items like tire locks, kids' toys, motor oil, or other items? Is it structurally safe to place a bike rack on top of a popup trailer or better to use a hitch mount?

Pulling a 5th wheel
We just bought a Dodge 3500 1 ton and pulling a 36-foot 5th wheel, and was wondering if anyone else is pulling with that truck and can pull the 5th wheel OK.

Oops! Motorhome driver miscalculates
Operating an RV is not hard, but you do have to think ahead before taking action. Asking yourself questions helps: Can we fit into that parking space? Can the trailer handle the high winds on the freeway? Can the transmission get us up that steep hill?
