Editor's Corner
By Chuck Woodbury

As you may know, my father died suddenly in early February. My fragile, 85-year-old mother was left without her husband after 62 years of marriage.
Ever since, blogger and Dr. of RVing Jim Twamley has filled in for me here (thanks, Jim!). Many of you have written to me, wondering if I'm okay. And so for you, and others who care, I will tell you what has been happening with me. I don't feel right devoting too much space here about what is mostly a family matter, so I will finish this letter in my blog if you would like to read more.
In early February, I was one day away from ending a three-week RV trip in my new motorhome when I got word that my father, 87, was dying. He had driven himself to the hospital emergency room with a piece of turkey stuck in his throat. Removing it should have been a routine matter, but, alas, there were complications.
I raced from southern Oregon to his hospital bed in the small gold rush-era town of Grass Valley, Calif. He was barely conscious. He tried to speak, but could only whisper "Chuuucck." He wanted to say more, but was too drugged. The nurse said I should let him sleep: there was a glimmer of hope then that he would recover. Eight hours later, at 3 a.m., he died. What he was trying to say to me will haunt me forever.
After the funeral and a myriad of financial and legal chores, I drove my motorhome with my mother aboard to my home in Washington state, where she has stayed with me ever since. I am the oldest of three children, and the only one with the time or appropriate living space to care for her.

Winnebago to shut down plants
Winnebago Industries Inc., will shut down its plants next week. The temporary closure will impact all three plants in Forest City, Hampton and Charles City, Iowa, although one production line will stay open in Charles City. A Winnebago spokesperson said the company was simply reacting to the economy, where fuel prices and other factors have hurt sales. Last month, Winnebago laid off 200 employees. It employs about 3,000 at all its plants.
Fast-forward to RVing's future: good or bad?
RVs and RVing have changed a lot in the last several decades. What will they be like in the future? Fulltime RVer and blogger Jim Twamley consults his crystal ball for some interesting predictions. RV roof maintenance questions are most-asked
RV technician Mark Polk is the author of The RV Book and producer of 15 DVDs about how to maintain RVs (available at RVbookstore.com). "I get asked 50 questions a week by e-mail," he recently told the New York Times, adding that the maintenance problems that he hears about most often involve roofs. "The membrane roofs are guaranteed by the manufacturers," he said, "but it's the owner's responsibility to inspect the seals around vents and other rooftop protrusions."
RV Cooking Show host prepares "Sensational Shrimp"
Port Aransas, Texas is popular with RVers year round. The scenery is fabulous and there is plenty to do. In this episode of the RV Cooking Show, host Evanne Schmarder picks up some shrimp (fat and fabulous in these parts) and whips up her Sensational Shrimp & Asparagus. Although it may seem fancy-dancy it tastes well. . .sensational! Enjoy.

RV Performance with Eric Davis
Motorhome owner asks how to get more power
Since 1972 Eric Davis has addressed RV engine performance. This week he answers this question:
Dear Eric: I'm looking for information on a fuel pump for my 2002 Dodge Cummins. I've had the lift pump replaced and the pump is now in the fuel tank. The pressure is lower than it was with the old lift pump but the dealer says it's now a high volume low pressure pump and they don't worry about pressure anymore. Can you tell me which pump you would recommend and what the price would be? Oh yes, it is a H.O. [high performance] engine.
Read Eric's response at RVperformanceTips.com.

Overloading your RV is dangerous! Don't do it!
We have told you about this article, but it's an important issue, so we'll tell you again. Overloading an RV is dangerous and should be avoided. Towing system weights
Every component in a towing system has a weight rating. Never exceed the lowest rated component in the system. For example, your tow vehicle might be rated to tow 7,000 pounds, but if the hitch receiver on the tow vehicle is rated for 5,000 pounds, that is the most you can tow. This can be especially true on motorhomes. The motorhome might be rated to tow 6,000 pounds, but until recently most receivers on motorhomes were rated for 3,500 pounds.

Boondocking Tip
By Russ and Tina De Maris
Get more lighting with less power
Boondockers who rely on solar or wind power need to be cautious about electricity consumption, so here are some "enlightening" tips. Fluorescent lighting produces the most light for the amount of power consumed. Consider replacing factory-equipped incandescent fixtures with low-voltage fluorescent tube lights. Where good work or reading light is needed, replace the old "pillow" style incandescent fixtures with incandescent "spot" lights that shoot a focused beam of intense light right where you need it. If you enjoy sitting under the awning after dark, but find the outside "porch light" too dim for card playing or reading, then buy a shore power style "clamp" light fixture and a household energy saving "spiral lamp." These shore-power lamps produce as much light as a 100-watt household bulb but use only 26 watts of power. Plug the light fixture into your outside shore power outlet and use your RV inverter for power. You'll use little more "juice" than a single "pillow" style 12-volt incandescent fixture, yet bathe the area in bright light.

Greasy question
Please forgive a potential dumb question in that I am new to this game. Do the ends of the spring bars and the top of the hitch ball need to be greased? If so, how often (maybe every time the units are used)? And what type of grease ---(a ball joint type)?
Trailer coming out of storage questions
I bought a 24-foot travel trailer that has been in storage for 2 years. It's located 400 miles from home. I am a newbie to towing so a few questions:
1--What is suggested to have done to the trailer before towing it home? Some suggest repacking wheel bearings. Any other suggestions to prepare it for a 400-mile trip after storing 2 years?
2--Is wheel bearing repacking a difficult procedure? Can a person with somewhat moderate mechanical skills ---I've done it on a car before--do it?
3--What is average life expectancy of trailer tires? Miles vs. years?
Prior owner claims it was not used much but it is a 1999 model and has been stored outside in a moderate climate--no snow or winter-- but near ocean so lots of UV and some salt air.
Just what does the mandated change from analog TV to digital mean?
What does this mean to the RVing world and what does a newbie need to consider?

I have a 21' Gulfstream travel trailer. I have decided to install leveling jacks (scissor type). Can someone explain to me the following:
1. Is it better to bolt or weld them to the frame?
2. How do I figure out where on the frame to install them (close to the wheels or front and back of frame)?
