Editor's Corner
By Chuck Woodbury
On a recent trip to Sacramento, Calif., to see some friends, I stayed in the Cal Expo RV Park, which is right along the American River and its wonderful bicyle trail. Once I was settled, I phoned my friends to line up visits. "Oh, why are you staying at an RV park?" they all asked. "Come stay in our guest room."
Isn't it often the case that our friends and family want us to sleep inside their homes, when most of us prefer to stay in our RVs? For me, it's a matter of sleeping in my own bed rather than a strange one and of not having to cart away my clothes, toiletries and other essentials. My RV offers me a chance to be in my own private space, too, where everything is familiar and comfortable.
On a few RV trips, I needed to stay in a motel now and then, often when a guest is along who isn't able to stay in the RV. It is always a chore selecting what I think I will need for the night. Most of the time I forget something and need to run back to the RV to pick it up.
When I travel in my motorhome, all that's important to me is with me. And so, one by one, I told my friends, "No thanks, but I'd prefer to stay in my RV." And I did, and was about as comfy as a guy could be.

Airstream trailer? Well, sort of. . . but not really
This RV started off as an Airstream trailer, we're pretty darn sure of that. But somewhere along the line it got transformed into a motorhome, but not in the "mass produced" sense. We don't believe you will see many models of this rolling down the highway. Just this one, we think. See the photo.

RV Performance with Eric Davis
Since 1972 Eric Davis has addressed RV engine performance. This week he answers this question:
"Should I take my transmission out of overdrive on steep mountain grades?"
Dear Eric,
We have a 2002 Jayco 27DS class C motorhome on a Ford E450 chassis and a 6.8 V10 engine. We recently installed the Banks Power Pack System. We live near Denver and do much of our travel to the west through the mountains along I-70. When going up these steep grades, is it better to take the transmission out of overdrive? Same question when descending these steep grades -- take it out of overdrive to allow the transmission to keep your speed at a manageable rate or leave your transmission in "drive" and use your brakes as needed? Friends just had work done to their motorhome transmission and were advised not to take the coach out of overdrive when descending steep grades, but rather to keep it in "drive " and use their brakes. --Ron Olson

RVer's fridge is leaking ammonia. "Is this bad?" he asks
Dear RV Doctor,

Boondocking Tip
By Russ and Tina De Maris
Sewer mover?
Getting sewage out of your rig's holding tanks doesn't necessarily mean moving the rig to the dump station. Portable waste storage tanks or "blue boys" can tote that 'old black water' to the dump station in jig time. If your rig is parked just out of range of a suitable sewage receiver, you can use a macerator pump to grind and pump sewage greater distances through a garden hose or small diameter plastic pipe. Some macerators operate on 12-volt power, others on water pressure alone. Some boondockers combine macerator pumps with portable waste tanks to move their sewage while saving their backs from heavy tank lifting.
--Russ and Tina De Maris are the authors of RV Boondocking Basics.

Tire failures (beating a dead horse some more)
We just took delivery of our first RV a week ago and took it out over the weekend for a shakedown trip. While parking the trailer for the weekend, I noticed a funny squiggle in the tread pattern of one of the tires. Turns out it had a big blister and what appears to be a broken belt. Changed it out to the spare and enjoyed the rest of the weekend. Made the return trip on Tuesday and had a tire blow out while doing 65 on Interstate 75. Bad thing is the blowout tore the heck out of the fender well on the trailer. What do you folks think? Did I miss something? Or are these tires pure T junk?
Tow bars: which one do you recommend?
My wife and I are new to the RV world. Just bought a 35' Bounder. We plan to tow our vehicle behind us (2008 Ford Edge), but we are a bit confused over all the options for tow bars. I've checked out all the Blue Ox and Roadmaster options, and still don't know which one to get. We know we need to purchase a base plate for the Edge as it can be towed with all four wheels on the ground. We'll also need the safety cables, electrical wiring kits, and some type of braking system. Any suggestions?
Anchorage AK airport parking
In mid-June we'll be picking up/dropping off family members at Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage. We'll be driving a 33' Class A. Does anyone know if we can get into the short-term parking area or will we have to park off-site and take a shuttle?
With the increase of gas prices...
What are ways you use to decrease your fuel consumption? (or considering) I'm thinking about changing to a cold air intake with a K&N filter.
CQ, CQ: anybody out there on amateur radio?
My wife and I traveled for years on our boat and used our HAM radio practically daily. Although we traded our boat for an Airstream, we are still members of the Waterway Radio and Cruising Club who sponsor and run a regular "Land Cruisers Net" every Wednesday at approximately 0900 ET on 7.268 MHz LSB. We try to tune into the net as often as we can when we're on the road. I have a rig in my truck. (Still can't bring myself to drill holes in the Airstream.) Does anyone know of any other RV nets at other times or on other frequencies?

Bill's Hints
Don't ever light the water heater when the tank is empty. It could explode from steam pressure. There is a pressure relief valve, but don't depend on it since it is seldom tested. Once activated, it often tends to leak because of mineral deposits or dirt on the seal. -- From Trailers and Fifth Wheels Made Easy
