By Chuck Woodbury
I was just a little fellow when my mother snapped this photo in 1958 in Yellowstone National Park. I thought it was pretty great that a big ol' bear would come right up to our car and stare me in the eye. Back then, park visitors often fed the animals, and the rangers didn't care or at least looked the other way.
Today, you seldom see a bear when visiting Yellowstone, and feeding bears or any wild animal is a huge "no no." Bears that have tasted human food often develop a yearning for it, and will invade a campground in search of more. Last week, an Oregon man was attacked as he slept in a tent in a Yellowstone campground. The bear first took a bite of his right hand. "It then took my (left) hand and also took it in its jaws," Steven Bailey told CBS TV's Early Show. "So I began hitting it again with my right hand as hard as I could and screaming and yelling to get out. It went back to my right hand another time. That's when I could actually hear bones crunching."
For some reason the bear stopped, and Bailey was rescued by fellow campers. Although his campsite was squeaky clean, park officials believe the bear was accustomed to people and their food and that's what brought him to Bailey's tent. Several days later a bear was captured nearby, and officials are determining if it was the attacker. If so, it will likely be killed, the fate of most bears who have developed a taste for human food.
Until I wised up, I fed wild animals, mostly chipmunks and squirrels. Unlike bears, they will never pose a physical threat to humans, but in feeding them, we may end up killing them instead of simply providing a treat. These little critters learn to depend on our food, and can forgot how to forage for their own after the visitor season ends.
So don't feed wild animals. Mother Nature taught them how to find food. They don't need our crackers.

Thank for the cards and letters
I'd like to thank the hundreds of you who wrote or sent emails to me after I wrote last week about the death of my 85-year-old mother. Your kind words meant a lot. I apologize if I didn't answer everyone. It's been a busy time and there haven't been enough hours in the day to take care of everything. But, again, thank you to all of you who wrote.

Pot of Gold, Name is Money Contests take a break
We have paused our Pot of Gold and Your Name is Money contests for now. We awarded thousands of dollars over the last couple of years to readers of this newsletter and RVbookstore.com. Alas, interest in the contest had waned in recent months -- the same few people participating -- so we decided to give the contests a break. We'll bring them back again one day, and the readers of this newsletter will be the first to know.

HOW TO BUY AN RV
Winnebago chief sees big problems ahead for RV industry
The CEO of Winnebago Industries told Reuters last week that the economic challenges facing motorhome makers has only worsened in the month since the company reported that quarterly earnings tumbled 73 percent.
Bob Olson, Winnebago's new chief executive, acknowledged, "We've got a lot of things going against us." He said the current slump was different from previous ones because of its complexity -- so many consumer concerns besides record fuel prices including high food prices, declining home prices, and uncertainty about the upcoming presidential race.
"You can't turn on the TV or radio without hearing it's another record-setting day for fuel. And I think that's probably one of the biggest concerns right now, not only of RVers but everybody. They don't know where this is going to settle in."
Stupid RVer tricks: Stolen motorhome stolen again!
Yikes! It's bad enough to have your RV stolen once, but twice. Well, it happened in Oregon. But there is a twist to this theft, proving once again that there are still plenty of dumb criminals out there. Read more.

Keep thieves away from your RV fuel tank
The Arab oil embargo and consequent fuel shortages 35 years ago brought out thieves who siphoned fuel from vehicles, including RVs, tow trucks and dinghies. Now that fuel is so expensive, the thieves are back. How can RVers protect their precious fuel? Here are some suggestions.
Make your screen door slide easier to move
Some components on RVs seem to stay the same year after year even though their design is flawed. For instance, the common plastic slide cover on RV screen doors can be awkward to move with its traditional narrow ridge-type grip. This RVer decided the time had come for an improvement. See what he did to make the slide a cinch to operate. Why not do this yourself? Click here.
Record your RVing memories with a video camera
Camcorders are a great way to capture memories on an RV trip; they animate experiences much more effectively than a still camera. But which camcorder is best? In this post, Digital RVer guru Scott Koegler reviews a couple of excellent choices. See if one of these appeals to you.

Which wax is best to use on an RV?
Dear RV Doctor,
I want to wax my motorhome and I seem to be getting conflicting reports about what type of wax to use or not to use. The main problem seems to be the decal graphics. Do decals need a special wax? What if I use a boat wax on the entire motorhome including the decals?

Spend less at RV campgrounds
At some upscale RV parks in popular resort areas, an RVer can spend $40 or more a day for a site with full hook-ups. Few of us can afford more than a day or two at such places in these challenging economic times. Instead, most RVers are trying to find ways to spend as little as possible at campgrounds. Fortunately, you can cut your campground fees substantially by following some of the suggestions in this article. Click here.
Starcraft offers hard-sided truck campers

RV JOKE OF THE WEEK
An RVer named Stanley was stopped by a game warden in Northern California as he was returning to his motorhome with a bucket full of still-alive fish. "Do you have a license to catch those fish?" the game warden asked. "No, sir. These are my pet fish," the man replied. "Pet fish?" the warden asked. "Yes, sir. Every night I take these fish down to the lake where I'm camped and let them swim around for awhile. When they hear my whistle, they jump right back into the bucket and I take them back to the motorhome."
"That's a bunch of baloney," the game warden said as he reached for his pad of citations. The man looked at the game warden for a moment and then said, "If you don't believe me, then follow me back to the lake to see how it works." Still suspicious, but curious, the game warden agreed. And so they walked to the lake. There, the man poured the fish into the lake, where they disappeared into the water. "Okay," said the game warden. "Call them back."
"Call who back?"
"The fish," replied the warden.
"What fish?" asked the man.

RV Tech Tip by Mark Polk
How long will a tank of propane will last?
Question: We plan to do several days of dry camping at a time. Is there a way to calculate how much propane we will use?
Mark's answer: There is a way to roughly calculate propane usage. You need to know how much propane is in your RV when it is full. An RV propane tank is full at 80 percent of its capacity to allow for expansion. Multiply your propane container capacity using one of these formulas, (gallons or pounds), to determine container BTU capacity. BTUs per gallon equal 91,502. BTUs per pound equal 21,548. Divide your container BTU capacity by the total BTU demand of the appliances you are using. BTU appliance demand can normally be found on the appliance or in the appliance owner's manual. This will give you an idea of how long you can expect your LP gas to last. For example, if your RV propane container holds 14 gallons of LP gas when it's full, you multiply 14 X 91,502. The result is 128,1028. You divide this figure by the total BTU demand of appliances, let's say 43,800 BTUs, which gives you approximately 29 hours of use.

Screws came out of wall: how to be able to screw vent in?
I just noticed two screws came out of the vent above the cooktop in our travel trailer. The problem is when you try to screw them in, they keep coming out. This happened before with the shades. The shade holder came out and now I do not have enough tension for them to stay up. I used Crazy Glue to stick the screw in, but I do not know what to do for the vent. These walls are so thin, I am afraid more things will start falling out. It is a 2007 Funfinder RV. Any help would be great.
Propane use
How do you figure out how much propane you will use, specifically to run the heater overnight when boondocking? I have NO idea how to guess how much it will take. We have a 19-foot hard sided TT, not a four season, and we are planning one boondocking overnight in the Grand Tetons mid-September. I expect the heater may have to run quite a bit that night. Any way to figure a rough estimate?
Greenball tires
I've been looking for more load capacity when I replace the ST225R15 D tires on my fiver; current tires only allow 120 lbs over GVW. Not that I plan to overload, just looking for a little margin. I've found a Greenball Transmaster ST225R15 load range E would give me an additional 300 pounds of weight margin per tire. Does anybody have experience, good or bad, with these tires? They are made in Taiwan and I don't remember ever hearing of them.
LP issues
I have a 1988 Fleetwood Yukon 19' TT. Have noticed some issues while using LP and would like some help.
Would like to add some more cabinets
I just bought a fabulous used Outback and would like to know where I can get some cabinets to put over the sofa and dinette windows like a lot of the trailers come with. New to RVing and haven't found all the great places to shop for goodies yet!
